• Major Update Speculation V35 - A Distinctive Lack of Communication

I don't think this is gonna be the Mayann update. Similar in themes? Yes. Did they mention the Mayann update in the post? No. Something tells me this was an idea Valve has had in the works for a long, long while now but decided to mention today to prepare for the usual dry-spell there usually is after the holidays. In terms of TF2 updates and all that, y'know. Announce all this shit ahead of time, give the community time to tinker around, have a release window sometime after the holidays. Boom. A fun, neat, Spring/Summer TF2 update. The jungle theme is great and fits a lot of aspects of the current community updates that are out there. You can have anything ranging from jungle warefare to Indiana Jones-type exploration and even hell, I could see a Jurassic Park-themed map being really cool. All within the theme, jungle, and that's that. I think it's a good idea that Valve gave to the community to play with. Nothing biased. Nothing that's really been done before. It's a fun-for-all sorta deal. Now, give the mapmakers those map assets as teased in the blog header, and that would be pretty neat. I like that skybox that was shown a lot.
probably not gonna be the mayann update but this looks like a vague mention
This is encompassing ALL of the updates that are out there, though. Still not singling out a particular one.
This is encompassing ALL of the updates that are out there, though. Still not singling out a particular one.
From an email Valve has sent out some months ago: "The plan is for Valve to consider suggestions for themed-updates from the community. If there is a theme we think would be interesting to pursue, we'll create a blog post announcing the theme and inviting the entire community to participate. The blog post will outline the theme, timeline, and how the revenue will be shared. There won't be official community team leaders for the themed-updates like there have been in the past. Just like anything that ships from the Workshop, items will be selected based on the community's input." This was due to problems that existed in the management of previous community updates, so Valve has stopped picking community-specific updates and started chosing themes instead, giving people more freedom.

During the past year, I've switched from the ''they're just waiting for the right time to finish and officialy release Asteroid'' camp to ''holy crap, they've scrapped it and it's never coming out, is it?''. They've created an entirely new art theme and so many new assets, recorded a bunch of new voicelines, came up with an entirely new gamemode and then re-iterated both on it and the map layout several times, created tons of totally unique UI elements... and then shelved the whole thing for 2 years when they were about 90% done?! Maybe the gamemode had flaws, but it certainly wasn't accepted so poorly to warrant scrapping the whole thing. I'm sure plenty of people would play it if it were released on live, regular Valve servers.

and it also (seems) fucks over anyone that has worked outside of cosmetics/models gigantically. All animators/web creators and to an extent even prop makers will get little to no reward for all the hard work they put in, for Mayann as is most likely now, but doesn't show any good hopes for the future

Another person can say the same about Frontline because hey, jungle warefare and all. Two different ends of the spectrum, but they all fit within the jungle theme. General Summer items are also a thing, too. I can see a lot fitting the jungle theme there, also I'm just saying that my thoughts are that this could be Valve's answer to all these community updates that are out there since there's -already- so much to be curated from every single one. Like you said, if they're just going for themes now, this seems like their plan of action, now in-motion It's a good step to get people creating if they haven't yet, and what's already been created from people inspired by Mayann/Frontline/etc and the like is all the more better. Valve is giving reason for people to create, and it's a fun, all-encompassing theme to boot. Maybe I'm seeing things differently than others, but giving people reason to create in a call-to-arms is great. I like that they're going down this route, honestly.

someone at Valve's been playing the new Pokémon games I see
prop creators are paid if their work is used in maps if an animator/web creator (ie, Winglet animating the Mayann short or the folks who did the web design for the Frontline splash page) did work as part of promoting a community update, you can damn well bet they charged for it. Yes I made the code and host the Frontline website at no cost to the other Frontline contributors.

I also didn't know I was talking directly to one of the people working on the project, or that they'd be willing to work for free. I acknowledged my mistake- ease off?
Got a reply from Valve regarding if they will be releasing jungle assets in the near future:
We’ll try to give map authors some time to art-pass their maps with the content that will be shipping, but we won’t be ready for that for a while since the content is still being developed. -Eric
The assets won't ever be released. Just makes good Jungle maps like Borneo
Every single TF2 related website that I have ever worked on has been completely free (Excepting Robotic Boogaloo, but that was an entirely different matter) and were created out of a love for the game. Even going as far back as the Medieval Update back in 2011. Here's a (not even full) list:
Medieval Update Night of the Living Update Night of the Living Update 2: Return of the Night of the Living Update Emporium Halloween (Which appears to be down unfortunately) Workshop of Horrors Workshop Wonderland Frontline! Workshop of Horrors 2
This is not including my pièce de résistance, mods.tf, which was in active development for well over a year. I still have not received a penny from anyone, nor even a slight acknowledgement from Valve for the site. But as I said. I've done all this for the love of the game. There's never been an avenue for monetisation surrounding code, which is fine by me, as I've continued to enjoy myself without money grubbers coming along.

I really appreciate what you've done for the game, and I hope I didn't say anything to make you think otherwise. That aside, do you do professional web design elsewhere? I'd imagine you do, if only because what you've done is very well-made and I doubt you learned it for free.
Time to get excited?
I do now have a job in programming, but I learned everything creating these sites. To be honest, Team Fortress and the community have enabled me to follow my passion of programming and given me the fire to teach myself. So really I should be thanking you all for giving me a platform to improve myself.
how come we dropped NOTLU for Workshop of Horrors? NOTLU has more flavor imo

My writing started off as for-free fiction I wrote and released to an old community I was a part of when I was younger. I learned enough in the process to start writing articles and technical stuff for cash, and nowadays that's how I make most of my money. It's always the best when your passions help you develop the necessary skills to make your living.
how come we dropped NOTLU for Workshop of Horrors? NOTLU has more flavor imo
We weren't trying to be NOTLU, Retro just wanted to keep up the spirit of it. You really don't need to needlessly pit the two against eachother in a negative way. Workshop of Horrors aims to support the community and we do it out of pure good will. We want to see people create and have fun. We don't want competition. It's all about fun, but it takes a personal toll on us. Mental health is a real issue the team struggles with and things are difficult because of it but we do what we do to make the community a better place.

If we don't get at least one of them this December, I'm going to be more than a little bit disappointed. You know it's been too long when a full-fledged game mode, Player Destruction, has already deviated and spawned from Asteroid and gotten two completed maps into the game.
