Major Update Speculation V35 - A Distinctive Lack of Communication

Do you guys think we could still see new festives? No naughty crate drops yet. I've only been here since 2014, but i thin the crates dropped a week or so before the keys.

Well we didn't get any last year because they replaced them with the Tough Break case
If we do get some this year, Valve might release a update sometime this week to make them drop
You're giving Valve too much credit if you believe they spend their capital wisely, and doubly so if you think they will be inclined to pour additional resources into hiring staff for TF2. It's widely accepted by now that Valve has all the business acumen of a five-year-old child, with their current operational model sustained purely through a monopoly on digitally distributing games.
The TF artstyle does allow scratches.

Gun Mettle changed this logic and added scratches to specular maps, where they previously did not exist and the art style did not allow.
CHOOSE ONE
Not true at all. Specular maps have been used and employed for quite some time in game design. If the current team really didn't know that they could introduce detail via specular maps then they are complete morons and have little knowledge of graphic design. Considering Valve is one of the best and innovative game developers in the entire world I highly doubt they would hire graphic artist with no knowledge of such a basic graphical mechanic.
ok now you're just saying the opposite of what I responded to in the first place
you claimed that them using specular maps for detailing and scratches somehow went against TF2's artstyle, and that they hadn't used specular maps for detailing prior to Gun Mettle
I was simply remarking that they, meaning the TF Team, found a new use for specular maps as they pertained to TF2, and that there's not a problem with that.
Even if it was a bug hitting multiple targets was one of the most interesting mechanics of the weapon. No other soldier weapon had the punishing power against retreating enemies the bison had. It was a unique weapon with unique attributes, even if one of its greatest was a bug. Perhaps I am wrong and it was a bug. Did it really need to be fixed though?
It didn't, but it was still an unintended bug that became more problematic with-
Regarding fire damage that could have been a bug as it used particles to deal damage. The Christmas 2015 update buffing flamethrowers at range in-advertantly buffed long range bison shots.
that is literally what I just said man
This is breaking many of the core principles that casual launched on. Casual was not to have autobalance, or mid game connections to encourage "actual winners and losers." Making these changes is turning it into Quickplay, Casual was launched to offer a different experience to Quickplay, not the same.
current casual seemingly doesn't work for most people. clearly, the horde of ragequitters necessitates autobalance and mid-game joining. also, even with the feature additions I added, casual would still encourage playing the objective, have a progression system and have far more powerful map selection and party creation tools compared to what quickplay did. it would still be a different experience- a better one.
Earlier in your post you made a point that Team Fortress 2's cosmetics provide value to the developers as it provides them capital to update the game. Yet you are also ok with removing the primary way players play Team Fortress 2?
quickplay was never the primary way I played TF2. from launch, it was buggy garbage that barely worked and started to slowly but steadily choke the life out of community servers.
Even if you hate Quickplay and never use it you do actually benefit from its existence. If players enjoy playing TF2 and spend money on it it gives Valve capital that they can use for further development of the game. Players spending money on hats encourages artists to create hats for TF2 for you to wear, which creates more hats for players to spend money on. (Further adding to the core principle of value judgements as a core tf2 mechanic.) Valve can use this money to add new mechanics (contracts.) fund tournaments, and hire staff to balance weapons along with creating Valve updates.
ok but people still play the game without quickplay and enable these things
also, valve hiring staff? funding tournaments? listening to the community?
pfffff
Removing Quickplay caused a lot of players to quit the game as they no longer enjoy it.
not really.

even after the launch of Overwatch and MyM, TF2's player count has not massively dropped off. we've hovered in the 50-80k range for ages now, and even after all the doom and gloom we're always in the most-played games on Steam.
in fact, the actual statistics pretty much invalidate your entire argument. Quickplay has been dead and gone for half a year, but our playercount is only marginally worse than it was at the beginning of the year (before MyM!).
stating the obvious in a really obnoxious, condescending way
yeah no shit dude
Are you really still ok with removing Quickplay?
yeah, because Casual has the potential to be a far better system, and should the TF Team make the right improvements to the server browser, community servers could get the attention they deserve as an alternative to MM. community servers are how this game were played from day 1, and are by far the best experience I've ever had with TF2. however, they can't fairly compete with a Valve-biased Quickplay system or Valve servers flooding the server browser.
work needs to be done, obviously, but keeping Matchmaking and Community Servers completely separate while improving the experience connecting to and playing on both is the best possible scenario I see for this game, and is something that re-implementing Quickplay would prevent from happening.
Contra, I am not trying to be rude to you so my apologies if it comes off that way. I am just attempting to explain some economic principles that many would not understand since they don't have the time to study economics.
if player doesnt like game they wont play game
shit man i never wouldve figured that out
good thing most people still seem to like TF2 and we haven't lost a massive amount of players from MyM ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Even if players hate Quickplay and never used it, they got a hell of a lot of value out of it by other players who enjoyed it, not value from directly playing with them, but value in that it provided Valve capital to improve the game for everyone's benefit; Quickplay pubbers, streamers, content artists, youtubers, Valve itself, tournaments, etc.
nah, Quickplay strangled community servers, and the corresponding Valve servers, due to a lack of a consistent community, failed to help players develop higher levels of skill and actually get better at the game.
all QP + Valve servers did is make the vast majority of the TF2 playerbase dumb, easy-to-farm kills while directing them away from the servers, communities and experiences that attached TF2 veterans to the game to begin with and would've allowed them to better develop as players
Quickplay was designed to further enhance players value judgements and enhance the effectiveness of other systems (waved respawn times, the cosmetic system to name two). By voting to extend the map you are showing other players that you value the current map. By voting to scramble the teams in an unbalanced situation you are showing other players that you value balanced matches. Casual would have enhanced tf2's value based judgements by adding more depth to it. By playing casual you are showing other players that you value a more competitive pub.
If that's how vote scramble was suppose to be used I've never seen it happen that way. People often vote scrambled right towards the end of matches to deny wins to the other team when they were out played. This almost always ended up getting the person who started the vote scramble vote kicked off imminently if it passed as well.
Vote Scramble always pissed people off in the end as well.
Maybe if it only kicked in after the match ended then it wouldn't have been as annoying as it was.
When it came to quick-play though it always felt like a chore. I get into servers way too often to find people playing different games altogether majority of the time. People abandoned like crazy, creating loopsided matches left and right, then when people got forced to the other team ( which effectively punished those who stayed ), they often went spectator or afked and/or idled in spawn till they could get back onto the team they started on. People often ignored the objective of the map and running into friendlies and those players who ignored the objective to just DM on the map the entire time were frequent and the game was still plagued with hackers.
Someone on SPUF actually commissioned a comic that perfectly represented how I felt most quick-play matches but I can never find that damn comic when I need it...
team scramble vote was a mistake
allowing say to be binded to a key was also a mistake (if you're going to use helpful chat binds use say_team you nerd)
i've already up and left this game (but not for OW because surprise: the players there are just as shit as they are in meme dicktress the fourth pimpnation) it only took me 5 years and 10k+ hours of putting up with toxic faggotry to leave (also because all the soldier mains who bragged about their """SKILL""" while having two medic butt-plugs shoved up their anus was also getting annoying as fuck)
[sp]oh and if you are a soldier main i'd like to tell you that you are robin walker's bitch[/sp]
as for what i think we'll be getting for SISSMAS 2016 i think it'll be the same crap from 2015 (a.k.a no new content unless you count reskinned maps and weapons with terrible 512x512 textures barfed on as "content".)
as for what valve will remove from the heavy next it'll probably either be
jump-revving (because only TFBots are allowed to do that right guys)
the G.R.U (because allowing heavy to go faster than a paralyzed snail is a '"cancer"' game design)
fists of steel's ability to cock-block fully-charged headshots while fully overhealed (anything sniper mains bitch about besides DDS/Soldier/Demoman gets nerfed into the ground if you haven't noitced.)
natatatatatatascha's slow-on-hit ability (which then turns it into a direct downgrade because it's just the minigun but it sounds cool and lets you take 50%/20% less damage at a point where you've already lost any fight that got you blow 50% HP in the first place)
and if they wanted pyro/pyno to not be a complete cancer class all they have to do is remove airblast's shit ability to push people

Tough Break didn't have reskinned maps, dude.
Also, this is Major Update Speculation, not Bitter Ex-TF2 Player Rants. There's a whole other thread for that.
Ah here we go, this comic sums up what my Quick-play experience for me was like...

Luckily someone at SPUF still had a link to it.

I mean you're right but MUS has mostly been the latter for a few months.

not sure what to think of the shoe-horned unusual team captain. is that supposed to identify the character as skilled or what
otherwise a nice little comic

Remember that phrase of "Unusuals show you are better"
well i gotta be honest its half true, but if you actually play very well and don't focus on a bunch of effects on your screen. then sure
not sure what to think of the shoe-horned unusual team captain. is that supposed to identify the character as skilled or what

I always guessed it was suppose to symbolize a more experienced player is all. Mainly due to how he talks in the comic. Instead of your typical unusual wearing ass hat, who generally makes "get wrecked" or "git gud scrub" comments every time he gets a kill, he just asking if there aren't any opponents around that are more along his level in a calm and collective manor.
I mean you're right but MUS has mostly been the latter for a few months.
Remove "ex" from the sentence and that would be mostly accurate, save for your estimate on the time period said negativity starting taking hold. MUS has been a haven of despondence and anger for quite some time, and rightly so.
why the fuck am i still getting tough break cosmetic case drops

They will be replaced with "Inferno Flames" Cases this week

Why does everyone keep thinking that the smismass update is the pyro update? There is no certainty of that at all despite VNN guy saying so or from past TF2 update release times.

Its the only update we really know about

Because Valve said they are working on a "Campaign and Pyro Pack for the next Update"
Well, no.
"but this year we’re working on something even better: an all-new Pyro Pack, improvements to Comp Mode, and a big new update and campaign."
They never said the Pyro Pack was part of the next campaign update.
Temper your expectations and check your facts before you start saying "Valve lied."

I'm taking the "this year" as "content released this year"
Guess we will see son enough?
In that blogpost I think Valve did definitely imply the Pyro update was coming with the Christmas Campaign but they didn't outright confirm it just in case they ran into some issues and weren't able to ship it for some reason, which is probably the best way to handle it.
They phrased it the same way they did Tough Break last year.
The fact is if we don't get it this month, we won't get it until the next summer update. 1 year to make 3 weapons at most would be incredibly embarrassing.
An inferno Christmas would be an interesting change to the traditional naughty/nice Christmas theme.
I for one would welcome a fiery hell of a Christmas.
[editline]13th December 2016[/editline]
Not that I would be around to play it at the time of the hypothetical update, but I'd love it regardless.
If its not the next update I'll probably continue not playing.
Especially if the update is just contracts and a workshop dump
I just realized
You get coal for being naughty, you know what else coal is used for? Keeping a fire lit.
Especially if the update is just contracts and a workshop dump
It would be nice if they choose some weapons for that workshop dump, Even if it's just a massive amount of reskins.
Anything is good at this point.

That's the point of it, old Nick gives naughty children something practical. Much better than here in Finland where he gives them brushwood
