In defense of the outrage, there are a LOT of recently announced card games, and ones being worked on behind closed doors, that are in direct response to the popularity of Hearthstone, it's easy to go "Well, fuck, I guess Valve really is following the money, huh?" When you see them working on a card game like everyone else, regardless of history or whatever, they really are at the end of the day making ANOTHER card game, and I hope it's good! But. Still another card game.
Pls just be better than Hearthstone that's all I ask for.
I would be beyond shocked if Valve managed to make a card game worse than the dumpster fire that is Hearthstone right now.
My only praise to Artifact is it's not a VR game, not everyone can shill out that amount of money to play those kind of games.
And I was beginning to get worried when they said 3 or so games were in development and pretty much most of their workers are on VR. Gave a bad vibe that those games were going to be VR and VR only.
It will probably have VR support. Valve really likes to plug VR into all their recent releases (Dota 2, SteamVR). It would work, since it's not really a mobility-based game and can be observed easily with or without VR.
Dota 2 announced:
"I WANTED A REAL VALVE GAME"
"Wtf valve there's already HoN and League Of Legends"
Turns into the highest value esport in the world
Artifact announced
"I WANTED A REAL VALVE GAME"
"Wtf valve there's already Hearthstone and Gwent"
Turns into ?, only time will tell
Back when Dota 2 was announced there were only two big Moba games, it wasn't a genre that had been established all that much yet. Dota becoming popular (alongside LoL) made everyone ape the genre, not the other way around.
But on the other hand there already are tons of card games on the market, so I don't think the card game will be as successful. However, if the mechanics are fun, it might surpass HS as a proper E-Sport card game because HS is dominated by RNG and until Blizzard implements a mode where random cards are banned, it never is a true competitive game.

im too lazy to find it myself but people definitly had a super negative reaction to the DOTA 2 announcement. Can probably find it if you google it

i am really wondering if the guys at artifact thought it was a good idea to show a teaser and run

it literally says 2018 though. Given it's Valve, there's still a good chance that it doesn't even full release in 2018, just an extensive beta period. They'll probably have to release it soon if they want it to be relevant in card games, though.

I am afraid we have nothing yet.
Only time will tell the fate of this [del]Hearthstone ripoff[/del] original card game

Well if you look at the first post in this thread, then its clearly original.
(i know you are joking but still)
Bumping this with fresh screenshots.

It looks exactly like hearthstone.
You know, you'd think of all things an online trading card game would be free to play?
It looks exactly like hearthstone.
Without a doubt it isn't hearthstone, but Artifact is pushing its way into an already crowded genre while offering nothing so far. Though to be perfectly honest I suspect the reason is to protect the mechanics of artifact since it'd be entirely possible for a cheap dev to poorly replicate a game like artifact and push the resulting garbage on to mobile or some other source.
Ugh.
At today’s reveal event for Artifact, Valve made clear their plans to start releasing games again, after years of focusing on the Steam platform and new hardware endeavors. Succinctly, a presentation presided by Gabe Newell said “now we’re going to start shipping games again.”
Too generic, was expecting a card game that was less of a card game. Also
Artifact will also come to iOS and Android in mid-2019
designed by mtg guy, simple enough to be a mobile game, turn-based, will take a lot of time to look graphically impressive (if ever), probably won't bother.

while the logo is cool and the art is nice, the cardback is pretty bland
there's a ton of RNG, though, so that's sometimes fun

Not again damn it, I won't be hurt again.
Would be nice if we get a Source 2 SDK with mobile support.
I cant seem to embed this but heres a video of the game

The pictures really don't do this game justice.
This article explains how the game is going to work, and has 4 minutes worth of gameplay in it.

It actually looks interesting and different enough. You pick 5 heroes. You get two types (red, blue, green, black) to make synergies. Each hero comes with 3 special cards automatically. Minimum of 40 card decks, but you can have as many cards as you want.
Closed beta to come this Spring according to the article.

I'm confident that valve will be able to manage this game, but at the same time I just want an FPS damn it. They did them so well!

I have to commend you for writing a post like this and not like the other 99% of the negative ones I've read today
Think of it this way: the people who are developing it actually want to make this game and it's probably not a very big team - most likely people who wouldn't spearhead an fps title development. They did say they've got a bunch of games being worked on right now, apart from Artifact.
Nice topic! :)
I am legit looking forward to playing (and modding/doing workshop for) Artifact. It looks like it has some sort of promise.
