Not when you craft two hats together, but when you destroy them by pressing the button.

They're using it as incentive for people to donate. There's a difference between organizing an event to encourage people to donate money and giving out direct rewards to people for donating.
Again, if you're donating with the expectation of receiving a reward, you're donating for all the wrong reasons.

It's a clever way to get most idiots who normally wouldn't donate money to donate. It's exploiting the nerd rage the wrenches generate for a good cause.
Most people aren't donating for the golden wrench. I didn't donate money for the wrench, I did it to help people who need it. I'm sure the guy who donated 100 bucks didn't either. Those who do donate simply to see golden wrenches destroyed aren't doing it for the right reasons, but at least it puts some money towards a good charity and helps some people out in the long run.

I'd say the gaming community with the exception of few like the sicko above, are a vary caring group. But I like the think the TF2 community are possibly the brightest and most down to earth (though crazy for hats and some drama involving hats) community out there, keep supporting this stuff bros
In my opinion, destroying the golden wrench for people who payed money for Child's Play or whatever seems kinda smart. What if them childrens end up with TF2? What will we do with all the raging kids who are mad that some guy has a golden wrench and they don't?
But I may be overthinking things and the kids would actually not care in the slightest.
