I've been with this game since 07 and I can assure you all the past "biggest update ever"s turned out pretty average. This won't be any different. the best major updates were actually the ones that came out of nowhere with zero hype or announcement (and within a reasonable timeframe)
I had a dream last night where the update was announced but the "update page" was actually this building in real life that you had to visit and there were cardboard displays with new features on them. They were called "quids" for some reason. Then some people took some of the quids so we couldn't see what those features were and it divided the TF2 community in half. Maybe it's a sign. Maybe it's Maybelline.
The TF Team has made (as far as I remember) claims this update will be one of the "biggest" in the history of the game. That means it could be bigger than the original updates that brought the game into the current state of non-stock weapons, cosmetics, and so on. We don't know if it'll be that content-dense or if they're doing things behind the curtains to make their jobs easier. I remember someone saying that it'd take Valve a year to get a Source 2 port of the game made at minimum; obviously this isn't what we're still expecting but maybe they're laying the framework down to prepare for something major like changes to the engine or optimizing the game. We don't know what percentage of their work on this update is done; we don't even know what they're doing for the update for certain. I'd predict that a lot of the work the TF Team has had has been them fixing things and preparing the game to make updating it with new content easier. For all we know, maybe they're working on stuff that they intend to release for the Heavy update. The only thing I could say with any certainty at all is that I'm pretty certain the TF Team will release the Heavy update before the year anniversary of the Pyro update.
Especially in the contrast of this I find the behavior of b4nny in the last few months since the MyM drama interesting and something someone could probably look into deeper. Before MyM the b4n man would have news about it very often and would often hype it up till the eventual release. Meanwhile when it comes to this Update, b4nny has been a lot more laid back and only teased the badlands change. No hyping up, no calling it "a gamechanger(tm)" Is this A. B4nny learning from his mistakes of not hyping up B. Valve straight out telling b4nny to shut it or C. Valve not telling b4nny as much as before

I know how Scrapbanking can get resurrected! Geel just needs to start charging a scrap per weapon instead of 1:1

For some reason when you open TF2 in your games library on steam, its "Recent News" sub-header links to a PC Gamer article on "An FPS Golden Age" that mentions nothing about TF2 other than a single opening line mentioning TFC's anniversary.

You know, for once, I actually agree with them. With brain-dead potato bads and partied up hackers preventing vote kicks, there is literally zero protection for the average player against cheaters these days.
I hope update will revise sv_pure whitelist on official servers, because now it feels like totalitary crap. Custom viewmodels banned, custom UI sounds banned, sprays banned, fullcolor decals are workaround that could be taken out at any moment, hell, even custom crosshairs are banned. Oh no, HL2 crosshair will ruin the game! [t]http://i.imgur.com/J4y26rb.jpg[/t] And in general, it sucks that we have to wait for neccessary fixes and changes to be bundled with new content and "flavor text". It's the same as if every time i called plumber he'd say "wait, i'll gather up boys, get drinks, so when i'll fix your piping we could have a party".

If the update doesn't come out this week, we will have got through the first 8 months of 2017 without a single major update Sad just to think about that
I feel like they should put sv_pure 0, or be less restrictive with it on casual matchmaking. sv_pure 1 should be on comp MM servers.
I feel like they should put sv_pure 0, or be less restrictive on casual matchmaking. SV_pure 1 can be on COMP MM servers.
To be honest sv_pure 0 gonna screw everything. There are ton of exploits based on file switching. Regulation is needed, but not to the current degree. On the other hand sv_pure 1 is too drastic even for comp. Harmless convenience tweaks should be allowed. Yes, and bring back sprays. jill pls
Yes, and bring back sprays. jill pls
I know! Unboxable, limited, crappy, official sprays! You can now spray a red tf logo on the walls! Get one on the Mann co store for $9.99 each!
hell, even custom crosshairs are banned.
What? I'm using ToonHud, and the custom crosshair I made has always shown up in Casual.

Yes, and bring back sprays. jill pls
I am aware of those exploits, but in that case they could at least make some tweaks, so that some mods are allowed. One of the TF2's strength is its openess to mods, at least it was untill they introduced sv_pure 1 to Valve servers. I can understand the necessity of sv_pure 1 to prevent usage of mods that can give you an unfair advantage, but at the same time i feel like that they could do something more, and less drastic than sv_pure 1 to fix the issue of those mods that give you the advantage.
HUD crosshairs work, but custom VMT crosshairs do not.
holy shit it's almost september
They really missed the entire Summer to release the update, man that is crazy.
imagine releasing a summer-themed update in the fall only @ valve
They really missed the entire Summer to release the update, man that is crazy.
Summer technically ends on September 22. If you're talking about summer break, that ended a couple weeks ago for most people.
I know! Unboxable, limited, crappy, official sprays! You can now spray a red tf logo on the walls! Get one on the Mann co store for $9.99 each!
PAID SPRAYS Actually, this might be the reason why mod support was declining over years. They forbid skins and monetized them, forbid animations and monetized them as taunts, resurrected jingle feature as monetized noisemakers, forbid effect changing mods and partially reintroduced them as monetized haloween spells. In context of this it doesn't seem far fetched that they could "resurrect" sprays in boiled down monetized form. Especially since there already is expirience with this move. What did Gabe say in his last AMA? Money... money money? Something about money, i don't remember for sure.
imagine releasing a summer-themed update in the fall only @ valve
They could still make the cut if they delay it until next summer.
imagine releasing a summer-themed update in the fall only @ valve
imagine releasing your most anticipated game that hasn't materialized after a decade of slowly dying hype and an increasing lack of trust due to your shady business practices and unawareness as a genderswapped text file posted by an irate ex-employee.
What did Gabe say in his last AMA? Money... money money? Something about money, i don't remember for sure.
"Actually, money is how the community steers work" -Gabe Newell 2015, pointing at a graph of the money earned by paid sprays and hats, and the lack of money being paid by people complaining about a lack of game balance and basic game development. We've seen over the last few years where the effort has gone between the two of these.
