TF2 General Chat and Update Speculation Station - One of Several Edition

My fondest memory is the weeks leading up to the Pyromania and then the weeks to the Mann Vs. Machine, the ARGs were solved so fast. And When I saw the MvM trailer released on Youtube I had a stroke. I was so hyped, and it was a great update... even if there weren't many hats with it.
Fondest memory would be every day at school me and my friends would strategise and discuss what we'd do when we got home and play a bunch of matches whilst talking in the old teamspeak.
This all lasted up to college for me, they were all pretty good at the game with decent inventories too...Up until Overwatch came out.
Then the never ending "It's a dead game lol" came whenever I asked if they'd like to play, they only play Overwatch and PUBG these days, and their aim got piss poor.
Now often than not I play alone solo-queuing, knowing fine well they still laugh and joke to each other how I can keep playing TF2.
I wanted to enjoy Overwatch, the game is incredibly pretty I just don't like the rock-paper-scissors combat, the choking meta, weird sense of balance and toxicity of competitive players.
Not saying TF2 has any of those issues, but it has been one of the only games I can play where skill alone can outplay other players.
Soldier vs Soldier isn't eternally locked in RNG, just whoever can get the direct hits and juggle.
It just felt fair in a sense (ignoring crits and oddly balanced weapons) as if I died to a Scout I wasn't pissed off, because I was outplayed.
In all my years of playing TF2, I still haven't come across a game that has came close to the feelings this game has gave me.
No other game could have me excited, loving it and hating it, make me passionate about learning 3D modelling. It made me find friends (and enemies) which both were amazing experiences and a good laugh.
It will most likely always be my #1 game since I grew up playing it, and I hope it'll always remain my #1.
what is your fondest memory of the game? asuming you've been here for a while, how has tf2 been part of your life?
Smissmas 2014 when I got my first/only items accepted in game. I had a really rough year and that update saved me from filing for bankruptcy. I know those items aren't particularly well loved but they were the best Smissmas present ever for me.
Fondest memories would have to be of Reddit RUGC_EU nocrit server, a lot of the regulars were comp players so it was like a completely different game. Topscoring as a Spy there actually felt like an achievement, and to be able to do so consistently was just mmmmm. There was also a jukebox plugin which people always spammed with "The RUGC Anthem" Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Japsen.
Some moments that stuck out in particular, one time the shoutcaster Salamancer came to say hello during some event, that felt kinda neat. He had terrible ping so he went as a medic, I remember dying to his community ubersaw (I think it was an ubersaw, might be a different medic melee) from 50 miles away. Another time I played Snakewater, this was way before it went official, we were attacking last and I was a Spy out of cloak, a Soldier shot a rocket at my feet and I crouchjumped over it, the splash hit me from behind and I was sent flying just low and fast enough to do a 180 flick and wtfstab him flying past. Then we capped and won.
Other than that server, FPUK was fun while it lasted.

My fondest memory was every single night seeing something new and exciting at AxlsTF2 server.
(RIP)
At what time do we ring the no-update-tonight bell? Every hour will be tense.
My fondest memory of TF2?
Why getting Cheaters Lament and then have a bad time when i was wearing it (T'was my 1st hat) in 2009.
Also using the invisible tauntkill exploit as a Spy to mess with Engineers.

I'd say the latest anyone should hold out would be 6pm (PT).
My fondest memory of TF2? Finding the old Slag servers. Not only were the gamemodes awesome, but everyone was so chill. I loved it!
My fondest memory was probably discovering those custom map servers, I remember my first one was some weird Japanese map called "surf" I think?
Since we're on the topic of nice memories, this game is how I met the online friends I still interact with daily to this day. Around 2009 or so I won tf2 in a raffle, joined a server, stuck with it's community and became good friends with them. On a literal dice roll I got to play one of the best games out there AND met people I still interact with almost a decade later.
My memory, is trying to get those weapon unlocks on the Xbox360, but failing.

Id pull out Contra's Blog Post release table, but I don't have it right now.
Basically, if we dont get anything in 13~ Hours, it's fine to ring the bell and go to sleep.
Interestingly enough, though, releases of Videos always happen around 23:00 UTC. Don't know if day 1 will have the SFM, tho.
I'm going to bed, wake me up if there's a blog post.

RIP ;_;
I am not expecting anything today, but it would be a nice surprise.
My fondest memories of TF2 are when community servers still had maps other than Turbine and 2Fort. Even my favorite server chain had to discontinue its payload rotation due to lack of interest - now all it has is 24/7 Turbine and Harvest, the latter being fast spawn.
My fondest memory is ... still in progress
I'll start lamenting when I actually quit playing videogames, not before

You can have a fond memory of something while still currently enjoying it.
what is your fondest memory of the game?
oh man. probably the first time I ever played the game. I was on egypt with my brother (we both got steam around the same time in july 2009), and I couldn't figure out how to fire the heavy's minigun.
Best TF2 memories? It would be either:
1. The very first months of getting into TF2 after I had just bought a new gaming PC in July 2008. I bought the Orange Box, played through HL2, both of its Episodes and Portal, and then finally gave TF2 a try, expecting to be destroyed by real-life players and to have a terrible time since I usually played multiplayer FPS games versus bots for months before daring to face human opposition. Those summer months of 2008 (finished my freshman-year university studies in June, had time the whole summer) were an unforgettable experience - TF2 was surprisingly forgiving to new players like me if you were willing to learn and check the TF2 Wiki or a guide a bit, fresh, colorful, soooo fun, had so many different classes and weapons to offer, the artstyle was an amazingly wonderful change compared to drab military and sci-fi shooters at the time... There were also three big content updates right around the time I joined (Medic/Gold Rush update in April, Pyro update in June, Heavy update in August with KOTH as well) so it felt like there was something new to try every few weeks. It was just that unforgettable period of falling in love with a particular game, back when you're excited and interested about every aspect of it, well before you eventually become hypercritical over balance issues or cynical about its development.
2. The feeling of playing on (now mostly long-dead) community servers of old in the 2009-2010 period, with a decent map rotation (back when the map pool was more managable), regulars that were enthusiastic, experienced, decently skilled and willing to help or chat away and take the basics of the game at least somewhat seriously while still having a sense of humour. Mostly EU servers like Hampshire Heavies, Triggerhappygamers, Lethal Zone, Uberium, Knight's Social Club, German Headquarters, UKCS etc. Once I moved from playing on randomly found servers in my baby-TF2-player phase (which included plenty of instarespawn and 32-man stuff and even Saigns.de's imbalanced modded servers, also a lot of Dustbowl and 2Fort-only servers) and created a Favorited list of community servers with stock settings, a decent map rotation and proper, dependable, challenging regulars, an even better TF2 opened up for me.
My fondest memory of tf2 was last night, when after 6 years of playing this game my team finally decided to PUSH THE DAMN CART
I'd call my fondest memory a time between Gun Mettle and the Invasion. My favourite weapon set had their prime time (Natascha, Dalokohs and Eviction Notice) and I discovered a 24/7 Turbine server. Up until then, I was mainly a pub player.
Then I invented the aforementioned set for a certain tactic. Your role as the Heavy would be to clear your way to the enemy vents using the Natascha, eating a Dalokohs at the entrance and then waiting around the corner with the Eviction Notice out. Once a player appeared, you would start rapidly punching them all the way back to spawn. Getting kills like that was and still is super satisfying.
However, the Eviction Notice and the Natascha aren't as strong as they were in the autumn of 2015, so now this strat doesn't fare well against explosive classes, Heavies and Pyros, whereas before you could take on anything in a 1-on-1 that wasn't a Heavy. In addition, the server died off at some point and Skial hasn't been an effective replacement for it, so it now lives on as a golden age in my mind.
When I started playing this game I had a Smores poptart addiction and every time I remember back to older times my mouth still tastes that horrid trash can of flavor that I still don't know why I ate so much of.
Pub mentality.
Being better sniper than someone playing sniper = you're hacking.
Apparently you can't be better than other players, else you will be accusued of hacking.

To be fair a good enough sniper almost feels like hacking, and now that we can't spectate it's very hard to verify. You basically have to drop everything, go spy, cloak, and see if he turns to look at you

I remember Axls server, they ran tons of custom maps, including mine in the early days and even up to 2012 i think. Them and lots of others are gone today, sadly :-(

I met 40+ people between 2005-2016 just because i started running gameservers for Valve games. Around half of those are from TF2 itself, and all of them are great. We still keep in touch real life with some of the people and meet about once a year since we're all over the country. This game has given me such much fun and joy and good friends outside of it. There is even meetings yearly between ex-admins and players, on which 15-25 people attend each time. Crazy, and it all started because i started running gameservers years ago. I heard Svdl was part of one of the latest meetings and he was treated like a superstar, having so much items in the game.

It's just sad that people can't accept that someone is better than them sometimes. The complaints usually come from people who get sniped by me and they switch to sniper ( Trying to do the same thing I do ) and usually end up failing at it so they start accusing of hacks.
My fondest memories were when I first found out about the game back in 2008, and quickly introduced any person who ever came over to it. By 2011, I had monthly LAN parties with 10-20 people only ever playing Team Fortress 2. My brothers and I would wake up really early and just play for hours on any interesting server we could find, and we used to idle and speculate excitedly which weapons we would wake up too. I remember when Chris, my kid brother, got the Headtakers Head for the first time, we all argued for hours for him to let us get it from him. We used to just hang on Orange after tense matches and have Sniper competitions on either end. Team Fortress 2 has been the most significant game in my life, and has introduced me to more people then I've ever met in my real life. Everything up until Tough Break was my favorite memory of TF2.

I was in a similar situation, started playing shortly after the Pyro update in 2008, got a decent enough computer to run the game well at the start of 2009, and started playing pretty much daily.
I was a former Knight's Social Club regular too, for most of the server's lifetime. I really miss the social aspect of TF2 that has been neutered with matchmaking (and quickplay before it). Sure, you can party up with your friends and look for a game, even join the other team if enough of them leave, but you can't replace having 23 other seasoned regulars of a server all coming together. Acknowledging each person as a threat, playing against someone you know, expressive personalities giving fights more of an impact, but still feeling as though it was a jovial encounter.
One of the most important things for me in any upcoming update would be for the TF2 team to give community servers some decent traffic, they owe a debt to such servers as they are what carried TF2 through it's most popular and exciting years. Either through a prominent button on the main menu, repurposing quickplay to feed directly into only community servers, giving us a simple in-game 'Favourite Servers' UI section, just to boost the player count and give the community option some visibility for new or returning players to try out.
I doubt it is a priority, but I recall reading about an email from the Team sent some time ago about them changing the way community servers are handled, so it may not yet be a scrapped idea.
