I play Killing Floor 2 as a supplemental game and even own my own server, but I can't use that as my primary game--I need a fast-paced PvP shooter that rewards skill and allows me to operate relatively independently.
I usually play the beta of Quake Champions when i don't want to play TF2. It's a really fun game, in which the 'champions' concept can bring everyone its own playstyle and is also a very fast-paced game (we're talking about Quake after all. TF2's grandfather) However it has currently its own big flaws. You can also try Quake Live/Quake 3 that are fun to play even offline/LAN. Changing topic: It is 4 years that I play TF2 and I never got the birthday hat because I'm never at home on the 23rd of August. I'm going to use a toaster laptop this year: is opening TF2 enough to get the hat, or do I have to get in a match?
Just opening TF does the trick.
I really hope they release it during this week. Next one will be the last before i start to prepare for semester. If they will not, because they wouldn't have enough time to finish it - that's alright, but if they don't because of international - that would be very disappointing, because dota2 took a lot from me as Half-Life fan and as TF2 fan in regards to development focus. And as to doing something different to distract oneself from waiting; it doesn't really work in this case, because it was so long already, that you start not to wait, but wonder what is happening and how long it will take for them to make it? Same thing was with Half-Life: first you could distract yourself from waiting eqsily, because you knew it's not the time yet, then came time of confused wondering, because all deadlines that you've set up in your mind were crossed, and only when i realized it's time to give up , i stopped waiting.
Off Topic: Ive seen many people wanting an extra slot for medals, that would be cool but here is another Idea, we could have something like this ( http://scoutmastercg.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/MbSash58700.jpg ) to sew the medals on it (3-4 medals)

I think the best we'll ever get is the action slot allowing you to equip badges.
So just to be sure, we shouldn't expect any updates or patches at all this week? Just asking, cause if they happen to release some more bug fixes and whatnot, then maybe there's a small glimmer of hope for something more?
This week can totally be the week. As others have said the TF Team usually helps out at the International during the main event, but for all we know given these are circumstances that were never met before, they might act differently this time.
Maybe one guy got grounded and punished to press the "release update" button back at the HQ

Wouldn't like to have you wrong, though. (sorry, not meant to rate dumb, my fingers are too big for my phone)
I think TF2 has ruined me. I can't play any game without thinking the entire time that I would rather be playing TF2.
I think TF2 has ruined me. I can't play any game without thinking the entire time that I would rather be playing TF2.
To be honest I have the exact opposite. Every time I play TF2, I can't help but think "I would rather be playing some other game..." Probably the lack of updates really got to me this time.
At this point i can't be certain in anything. Wouldn't like to have you wrong, though. (sorry, not meant to rate dumb, my fingers are too big for my phone)
People are playing up the International to be far more important than it actually is, teams in the past have proven that if a Major Update is ready, the International won't stop them to launch it around it, or even one day before it. You can't use the rule of thumb in a year where the rule of thumb was already broken.
Today i learned that to use custom viewmodels on official servers you just have to launch any map trough console before joining any server. Now i am even more confused as to why did they have to forbid them
You know what's weird? How Valve never released the music track that's in the Two Cities trailer.

You'd think they would've shipped it with the update, or would've at least have it out already.
Something being tossed around on my Discord a lot right now is a rumor that Valve is wanting to give away TF2 to a third party after a while. I currently have nothing to prove this, however it's got me thinking, what is the general opinion of something like this? Who could do it well? What would you like to see? P.S. the only thing being said a lot is that it was a letter leaked on the "dark web". It's always nice when people throw around that word with no further into.
I say without a single credible citation that rumor is about as valid as the update coming out in the next hour. As for the actual likelihood of that, I feel like if they haven't done it already to not count on it. Competitive is a massive undertaking that they've already now invested a year into fixing themselves, so to hand it off immediately afterwards would be unwise. It wouldn't surprise me if at one point somebody threw out the idea of "hiring outside people for the job", but I doubt it would be seriously considered.

This game racks in a lot of money, giving it away to a third party would be like chopping their own arm off

Which Mike Morasky told was specifically made for this video in hand.

Despite Tf2 only making a fraction of the money that, say steam makes, there's still an invested team behind it and Tf2 still makes a ton of money for valve, I think it'd be unwise for them to just sell it to some 3rd party developer. Not to mention it sounds like one of those "I work for valve" 4chan posts.

Since you're starting to get a good reputation now, and with Valve actually answering your questions directly, people may try to abuse that to get false info out there or just to troll you.
There was a rumour that they wanted many aspects to be community ran. This is at least believable
The likelihood of a third party being given control is just about nil. I’d expect that idea to be believed by those that are frustrated with the TF team. What is plausible, though, is that a contractor is brought into the picture. The TF team would still be in control, and the contractors would complete tasks to speed up development time. I’d expect the bulk of tasks to be feature development, bug fixing, and optimization. In an ideal world, we end up getting substantial updates more frequently since there are more people working on the game. In practice, I doubt things would go so well unless they managed to find some great contractors.
Valve knows from previous experiences that even if they are team lead, the people who work on it might not get the job done well enough (see CSGO and the early developer HPE for it). What Valve can do, is to give tasks to 3rd party to do and if it's good enough, they might use it just like they did with jungle related update. But i think thats all they are going to do. They are not going outsource TF2 development.
Besides, in my opinion, as much as Valve is treating TF2 badly right now, i doubt that any other company could support this game for this long, even if that support and updates aren't as great as they used to be, it's still quite impressive that it has gotten this far. But we also shouldn't giving Valve too much credit for supporting the game this long, because even if its supported and update occassionally, they could do it much more better and often, but their concept of "work on whatever you want" is really counterproductive if we're wishing for more and better thought updates.
A guy called yungfaurb made a trailer of what a TF2 Netflix Series could look like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVLkO3bvv4M

VNN you might as well have your source be John Valve; my uncle who works at Nintendo.
they should seriously contract work from the community since it's contracted, they get to decide the terms and arrangements so no community drama can happen like in the past, and they're given the talent and skills of the workshop community from artists like void, mappers like e-arkham, and other content creators going forwards this seems like a viable option, since the TF2 team can focus more on pushing updates and handling the brunt of the code related work while contractors can focus on the actual tangible content like maps and maybe even one-off mechanics like halloween bosses, as well as helping bugfix and test mechanics pre-release I would sincerely hope no contractors would be allowed to decide any content accepted from the workshop however. anything contracted should be content decided upon by the TF2 team.
