not very cool
If tf2 wasn't f2p, how dead would the game be?
If tf2 wasn't f2p, how dead would the game be?
It probably wouldn't be topping Steam's player counts at the very least.

TF2's download size has always been totally massive. Considering this person doesn't once mention the implementation of cosmetics and other entities that bog performance, I'm pretty sure they don't know what they're talking about here.

but it's wrong lol.
all these "changes" are just repeated side-effects of new features. Problems stacked onto other previous problems and sometimes ignored since day one. Combine this with the large ammount of people who at least worked on tf2 once and then passed their work onto another person who has different ways to design things and you get such a massive mess.
Only a tiny number of degradations are any remotely "deliberate" (and even then they would probably be regarded as questionable / non functional by newer employees)
Pretty sure we already know its because Valve is incredibly lazy with creating viewmodels.
I got bored and made a fake update blogpost

Pyro's sticker is one of the best
That 2007 vs 2017 TF2 video made it to the top /r/videos on redderp. The comments are full of people who used to play TF2, but no longer do. I read through a bunch of them, and got a fair amount of insight as to why people quit the game. There's a host of reasons, but "it's not as fun as it used to be" is a common thread. Many quit before MyM, but a fairly large group quit BECAUSE of MyM.

Haven't played tf2 in a year, guess I'm not missing out on much.
-snip-
Today in "fun TF2 bugs" if you trigger a spy's dead ringer with a wrangled sentry it levels up kills on your:
Wrench (including the Gunslinger)
Construction PDA (if you have a strange one)
AND the Wrangler itself.
TIL.
For as long as I've been aware of it, if you're a medic with a strange medi gun (any of them) and you pocket a player that triggers a dead ringer, it increments the assist counter on the medi gun. I did not know about this Wrangler bug until this evening.
EDIT: The above applies for Strange Cosmetic Parts: Assists when on a strange cosmetic item worn by the medic.
Second edit: Yes, I emailed Eric.
Earlier today I was in a game before the round started playing Demoman and one of those pre-round lines played with the demo saying "everyone should be going demo", a gibus spy saw this and changed to Demoman :v:.
So is there a FP TF2 discord? Sounds like it pretty neat for finding someone to queue with

if you don't care about keeping skins n' stuff and use dx8 = go with a comanglia config
if you do care about keeping skins n' phong and whatnot = go with rhapsody, disable phong if you feel like
if neither of those work too well for you = play the game on high settings and see if you notice any improvement. higher settings will put more load on the gpu and in some cases gives people better performance.
Clearly, some of TF2′s assets are less detailed. These were changes that was done deliberately - at some point in time, artists actually crafted new asset data for this. There’s a lot less animation data needed because there’s fewer moving parts. The specular maps on a lot of materials were turned down or simplified for higher compression. There were textures that were simplified and downgraded for more space.
If you just look at the numbers TF2 is looking far better than ever before. The Medigun went from a model with 3,040 tris and a single 512x512 texture to 6,486 tris and at least 2 2048x2048 textures (Along with an extra 5 that are the same size for skins). The animations also still have the bones for everything they just renamed it in the weapon model or didn't animate it in the transition to C models. Source also uses DXT compression so every texture that's the same resolution will be the same size. The only time I think Valve actually intended to shrink the file size of the game was the switch from WAV to MP3.
thought I would share something I found interesting a while ago, I bought the 'valve presents the sacrifice' book and noticed something strange about the pyro in the first panel of page 2 (https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/File:Director_02.jpg) sometime later I discovered there was line art of the same comic and it turns out the pyro got scribbled over and was originally a demo man (https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/4/4a/Director_02Lineart.jpg?t=20120108214130),
I think I have a doodle somewhere on another computer as I was figuring out what the comic error would actually look like as some cosmetics Ill see if I can find it
cross posting from the half life and portal thread, I should really look around these forums more, there is a lot of stuff here
So some of you may know about the Intruder Alert midi they included in the game files since 2009 war update, and how it sounded so shitty with the whole thing being played with the piano.
Well, it turns out it actually is meant to use fitting instruments, but the "tracks" of the midi were not properly assigned to the different instrument "channels" and except all of the tracks were using channel 0 which is set to piano.
So i noticed this and fixed it up, and now it sounds way nicer, you can listen to it here, the download link for the actual midi file is in the description.
I just realized that there's a HL2 prop in plain sight in Meet the Spy:

It's the long lost nerd brother of Mr. Ammo box!
What the hell is going on?
I was looking at the Tf2 community in Steam and I'm getting posts on a user name Rogue. Apparently, he was faking having cancer so that he could get free shit, including items and unusuals. Am I missing something here?
Also, if that were true, that is truly a scumbag thing to do. Now I'm certain few, if not some, would grow cynical and not be able to trust those who truly have cancer.
Kinda sucks but I know others have had this too.
Does anyone remember the feeling they had when first playing TF2 or at least your first 10 or even 50 hours?
I remember one of the reasons I got hooked on TF2 was its cartoony charm. Coming from strictly only playing "realistic" FPS like Battlefield, going to a cartoony FPS was a huge change for me. Ironically I hated TF2 when I first played it, I only got it with the Orange Box when the real game I wanted in that was Portal.
I remember hearing simple things like the sound of footsteps, especially on wood intrigue me. Or how the Scattergun and stickybomb launcher reloaded. The sound of the ball from the Sandman bouncing intrigued me, so did using the Huntsman.
For some odd reason I liked hearing them. I enjoyed the game itself too, but the noise and characteristics of the game just fueled my curiosity.
Can anyone force themselves to relive those initial feelings? Cause I can, but it doesn't last long. I just remember the feeling I had when I was early in TF2. I wish I could feel like that all the time when playing. After 4,900 hours the game has lost its charm to me. I haven't even really felt like wanting to play all year. I have played, but that's only cause I was bored as hell.
I miss being to interested and curious about TF2. I want that feeling back.
