I don't want to start a flame war here so lets please keep this nice and constructive.
I just don't how it's negative in any way. I don't see the taunt as mocking them in any way, but more celebrating that aspect of culture which they've emphasized.
And I also don't see why socioeconomic status comes into play... if I were to be given "special protection" from something because of traditionally having hardships, I'd feel insulted, not if it were the other way around.
Again, just my two cents.
Were Mayans one of the groups that used the stars for various forums of predictions and prophecies?
I only asked because I've been wanting shooting stars unusual effect for a while, even to the extent I made the suggestion on gamebanana sometime ago. Not sure if just being star themed would be enough to tie it to the mayan project though. Using this as my concept piece that I did to showcase it as a concept.
Although, I was hoping to suggest that the stars trail behind the person of they're actively moving perhaps. Like how the intel drops papers behind the player as they run with it in a sense.
i think an unusual effect that mimics the streaks during a meteor shower could be a nice understated effect, albeit not entirely Mayan in nature. pretty sure they were very advanced in astronomy; it was how they based their famous calendar.
This is an absolutely stupid idea because it's not Mayan but it's still like ancient civilization, but you could make shooting stars that have Nazca Lines styled trails?
Are we really starting this again?
Also, nice addition to the Frog/Toad Family!
Don't forget my idea to incorporate that famous frog memes in game.. :v:
You guys think an industrial jungle theme with underlying aztec ruins works for a map?

Yeah, would be awesome. It could even be a sawmill (I know there is already one, but it is probably the most prolific industry there). Maybe even a quarry.
Quarries have always this interest concept of different levels and highs in an open space, with maybe some subterranean routes as mines.

There is some cool machinery there too.

This is my layout rn, the center structure will be old mayan ruins with a pit connected by old ruined tunnels . The buildings around it will be of modern/industrial design with some old stones etc.

Speaking of layouts...
It's very little currently but I literally just started blocking it out 10 minutes ago. Hopefully I'll have more to show at the end of the day.
:hurr:
Cultural appropriation is a problem when it targets the weak and disadvantaged, not when it targets the strong.
The Maori are a people who have suffered pretty severely at the hands of Europeans, who have faced racism, the systematic destruction of their culture, and generations of poverty and political disenfranchisement. They became second class citizens in their own homeland, ruled over by foreigners who didn't share their culture, religion, or way of life, and whom actively tried to rob them of those things.
The Persians? Not so much. The region has been ruled locally for centuries, and the Persian peoples have been amply represented within their own countries and societies. They aren't an oppressed minority - they are in fact an oppressive majority, historically discriminating against various peoples such as the Kurds and the Azerbaijanis.
In comedy, there's the philosophy that a good comedian doesn't "punch down" and make fun of people who are powerless or repressed - it isn't funny. Instead, you "punch up", and make fun of the people who are at the top of society, because they're in a position to take being mocked in stride. Making fun of the President of The United States of America is fine, but making fun of a mentally ill homeless person is absolutely not.
The same sort of thing applies to cultural appropriation.
Giving a Soviet Ushanka to Heavy isn't particularly offensive, both because the Russians are a major power in the world, and because the Soviet Union isn't actually a thing anymore. But giving him a feathered headdress to wear instead actually is kind of offensive - most Native Americans are still economically and politically impoverished, and their cultures have suffered extensive and irreversible damage. They're still effectively second class citizens in many places, and they still suffer from racism and societal discrimination.
The whole idea of cultural appropriation is retarded.
Get your SJW rehtoric out of a friendly thread.

Absolutely. He is free to make a damn taunt about the maori dance, how is that in anyway cultural appropriation or racism? It's just stretching the real reason : He just wanted to make a taunt for fun and share it on the workshop. I believe he didnt expected SJW coming and trying to give him a lesson on what to make and what not to make.
It's a fucking game anyway.

You should take the hint that no one wants to read your essay-long posts. You come across as very pretentious and it gets pretty annoying.

Ignoring the whole cultural appropriation/"retarded fucking SJW rhetoric" as this friendly thread puts it for a minute this feels waaaaay too far off theme to brand as Mayann.
I get that the theme can feel a bit narrow because of the project name but the haka, the maori and new zealand have LITERALLY NO CONNECTION to the mayans, Mesoamerica or indianna jones style adventurers.
Like its on par with making a chinese dragon dance or another russian dance taunt or any other country's national dance for this. By all means make a war dance taunt for this project but if you do base it on an actual Mesoamerican one or better yet just make one up from scratch.

i know its kinda far fetched, but new evidence suggests south americans are partially related to polynesians, if that helps.
I mean, the Kazotsky Kick kind of makes sense because the Heavy is Russian, and it was originally his taunt before being made all-class, but the Haka doesn't really work like that. There aren't even any Maoris in TF2. I guess the Sniper is technically from New Zealand? That's a really big stretch though.

Very up for debate and either way there's a divergence of thousands of years between those cultures even if they did have a distant common ancestor.

There are in fact some hypothesis that connect Maori's culture with Mesoamerica and Southamerica, as there are TOO many similarities in many aspects of their cultures. Maori's could travel the Pacific Ocean at will and they stablished contact with América, so it is not THAT out of context.
Research it if you don't believe it

And if you go far back enough you can say everything is related to everything because of Pangea. It's called a theme. Sure you can stretch that theme pretty far but at some point you break the theme. When the update is based on a single geographical region and it's culture, and you change the region to across a goddamn ocean you ruin the theme.
While we're at it some say there is some evidence that Mayans made contact with aliens so all my Invasion items fit in the theme. And Mayans also had believed in a dragon like creature, so let's just bring the Medieval castle maps, weapons and armor into the Mayan update. Shit there are penguins on the southern coast of South America, let's throw some penguins and igloos in this update too! Penguins can cross oceans so it fits!
No one's saying they aren't connected. We're just saying that it isn't reason enough to include a New Zealand dance in the Central American themed update.

You didn't research enough if you think they are so different. Fair enough, can't force you.
Btw I didn't say I want the haka taunt in this update, just pointing out the "they have nothing to do with each other" (as you can read in the quoted post) may be not so true after all. That's it.
looking forward to this!

Read a bit instead of just eating up the Bering theory. Do you really not find similarities between those two cultures? Do you see mayans and aztecs and whatever that similar to northamerican natives? Maoris could sail the Pacific ocean, a rather calm one, and you can check how oceanic streams are and if they help or not reaching those coasts.
Then again I find those coincidences really interesting and not necessary for the update, but laughing about it... I don't know.
Sorry for derail
Made a Mayann update to my arena_discovery.
From a distance it doesn't look like much is different, but the bricks are whiter (limestone as opposed to sandstone) and grassier in the maps' center.

Also to spice up 'an arena map' a bit I've made a Knockout powerup (from mannpower, but modified to be even more powerful) set to spawn 1 in 3 rounds on the top of the head in the middle of the map. This means 2 of 3 rounds will have the gameplay a lot of people have come to enjoy of Discovery, but that 1 of 3 will be special-boss-mode.
Video showing Knockout thing:

I had experimented with using more props and textures from the mayann pack but found that they didn't work quite right in this environment. The map was already pretty detailed and using the detailed props and textures seemed to bewilder me; I wasn't looking at the routes players would pop out of.
x-post from Emporium.
We are not sure if this fits well enough, but we feel that it does in the pilot/explorer theme, so we are posting it with the Mayann update. Cheers!

I check the workshop frequently for new items and maps, and any items that are seen fit for the collection (having the mayann thumbnail and respecting the project's guidelines) are added.
