To add to this a bit from what I know, in the past they've given mappers anywhere between a few days notice, to an entire months notice that their map has been selected before the update goes live*. If they choose to buy the assets of the maps (which all the mappers are really hoping they do), as opposed to just "licensing" the assets and packing them into each map, they are going to probably want at least a good weeks notice to get everything sorted out. They'd need to sort out who they are buying what from, before they can pick up the maps themselves. They've licensed assets for every campaign so far, but with the last round of maps picked up for the comp update, they bought the assets and included them in the game files. This is optimal for mappers, as then we have all that content in the game to use for future maps. As a whole we've expressed to Valve that this is really important to us, so hopefully they'll do so this time. Another factor to consider is that a lot of these maps are using the same community made jungle assets, so buying them flat out instead of packing the same files into every map would be much more space efficient. Not sure if that really changes anything, but something to consider. *Mappers have to get a heads up before their map is included in an update, because unlike the model workshop, the map workshop is designed for the player side of things, not passing files over to Valve for inclusion. Valve needs our non-compiled map file (vmf), as well as any other custom content included in the map, so they can compile it themselves on their end if need be. Plus they need us to assign contributors, like giving them the list of people for the loading screen. Lots of backend stuff.
Would you and other mappers be inclined/allowed to say anything though?
There was just 34,000 VAC Bans today, the largest banwave ever recorded. Do we know anything specific, as in what games this affected?
ill bet 34000 new steam accounts where also made today...
Do the mappers sign any form of agreements about not revealing everything they get informed about in advance, or is it just up to their good hearts?
when valve approach you to pay you for your hard work, going behind their backs and leaking it seems like a good way to completely ruin your chances of getting your content officially included, so i imagine it's fairly low on the priority list for mappers with or without any agreements.
There was just 34,000 VAC Bans today, the largest banwave ever recorded. Do we know anything specific, as in what games this affected?
If it is for TF2 could this be a house cleaning before the update ?
Do the mappers sign any form of agreements about not revealing everything they get informed about in advance, or is it just up to their good hearts?
Unless their map is integral to the update, what would they need to know? Most cases, they won't need to know anything other than that their map has been selected. Anything that the TF team doesn't want leaked would be locked under NDA first. Beyond that, who'd want to spoil surprises?
Recently, some mappers have heard back from Valve that while there isn't a set deadline to report, they're still saying to keep working on their maps and get it on the Workshop as soon as possible. Keep this all in mind when hoping for an update - once maps are chosen, there'll need to be at least a few days for Valve and mappers to communicate and get everything that is needed sent over and set up. While there isn't a set deadline, they are still open to map submissions. There's still time before the update, even if we don't know how much.
Hello again Facepunch, this was me, about 26 hours ago. The exact reply was:
I don’t have a date to share, but just keep working on them. -Eric
To my question:
My two levels for the Mayann team project are very nearly finished, but it feels like the Jungle update is riiight around the corner and I'm worried we're going to run out of time! Can you reassure me that this update isn't ~~imminent~~?
Those of us working on things need to get a move on, and those of us just waiting for the fun need patience ;)
Unless their map is integral to the update, what would they need to know? Valve don't tell us jack
Those of us working on things need to get a move on, and those of us just waiting for the fun need patience ;)
I was patient 6 months ago. Now i'm interested in seeing how long they'll manage to actually hold it off.
Anything that the TF team doesn't want leaked would be locked under NDA first.
Even the community members who got to visit Valve and meet with the TF team didn'nt have to sign NDAs, same with the Stream Translation folks. Valve probably knows that those community members are trustworthy and won't spoil anything just to get a few clicks and likes
Still believe August isn't a reasonable estimate at this point?
Regarding maps, nobody wants to be the party pooper an leak information that should be kept private untill they are ready to announce it themselves. There's also risk that they wouldn't work with you anymore, or cancel the whole thing. Goes without saying that the information you have is you and for you only. But they do tell you if they don't want it to be public. Also, i heard that Blades map Banana Bay has been hit by downvote bots at the workshop. The stupidity from CSGO workshop seems to have arrived to TF2 too :-(

Do we know anything specific, as in what games this affected?
TF2 appears completely unaffected. Although this is usually how things go, que that meme of The Contract's cover, with miss Pauling as TF2 sitting in the dump outside the elite customers room, with Saxton hale-valve drinking champagne with CSGO and DOTA 2
If it is for TF2 could this be a house cleaning before the update ?
CSGO won the wave, some rich inventories went down the hill Example: http://steamcommunity.com/id/traderabsolut No signs for tf2 yet.
TF2 appears completely unaffected.
Can confirm... I ran into one of those [ACP] "Anti Cheat Police" guys.. Formally known as "Valve Cheat Police" about 20 minutes ago. I've seen the account for just over a year now and it still hasn't been banned. Edit: Funny enough, I think the only reason a few of the Valve Cheat Police [VCP] accounts got banned was cause they were going around servers spamming binds that tried to fool people into thinking they were affiliated with Valve.

None of the map or item authors I've contacted noticed anything unusual with their own workshop submissions. I'm kinda impressed how many votes they threw at it: it became the worst ranked map on the workshop. I'm disappointed, though. They stopped before it reached a one star rating. Has anyone even seen one of those? Even two star ratings seem to be pretty rare.

I've made some close eye looks on the maps i've submitted to workshop for the past few years. You only need 200 upvotes to receive 5 stars to the map, and 1 vote in addition to that to every negative vote. I think the value used to be 250 at some point, but it was lowered to 200 few years ago. I dont know about negative votes but i assume it takes a lot to make the value drop off from 5 stars to even to 4.
August as an expectation is ridiculous, and the short email exchange only proves that the Update isn't one entire month away. To the question
My two levels for the Mayann team project are very nearly finished, but it feels like the Jungle update is riiight around the corner and I'm worried we're going to run out of time! For all we know they are eyeing up next week and were just unsure yesterday, and are going to tell the folk friday/monday - as Crash said not the first time they told people a few days before the initial release.

They move on the 22nd not counting the weekends means they have 12 days to release the update before they move
They move on the 22nd not counting the weekends means they have 12 days to release the update before they move
August/Sept confirmed.
Dang the Splatoon 2 update today showed a lot more of Nintendo's Mann vs Machine inspired mode Salmon Run. Makes me wish more than ever Valve would actually update or do something with MvM again. Sigh.
well ill be damned, thanks for sharing - guess we are just in update limbo now
Splatoon is one of those games I wish was for PC. It checks off basically everything I look for in a multiplayer shooter, and I'm dismayed to see it's limited by a console. Instead I have to brook "let's take TF2, strip it of all mechanical depth, add a dash of MOBA, and inculcate collectivist mores by diminishing the role of the individual" Overwatch clones.
well ill be damned, thanks for sharing - guess we are just in update limbo now
So, situation as normal then. Seems like every week there's someone claiming the next update is next week
