Its been a year and 6 months since the competitive beta began and its still basically the same.
Rewatching part of that video upload I may of been mistaken about what Tyler said, I think it said that he's heard that the TF2 team has a road map for the future of the game and the part about dropping support may be speculation. It was kinda confusing because it was a live stream and he was talking to people who were donating to him at the same time, if that's the case I'm sorry if I mislead anyone.
I had such a disappointing dream last night.
Basically in my dream I woke up and looked on my PC, just to see what was occurring (whether my refund of a game had come through or not) and I got some kind of notification from TF2. With my own bloody eyes I could see the Jungle Update blog post, with promotional images and even a countdown timer! I fucking screamed for joy, you wouldn't believe. I tried to print screen it and post it on the forums, but as soon as I clicked the "Post Quick Reply" button, I woke up IRL covered in sweat with half of my mattress on the floor, I rushed to my PC to see if it was true. Not yet.
Was about 4am, didn't want to go back to bed at that point just in case the dream replayed itself.
GAAH THE UPDATE IS SO CLOSE EVEN MY SUBCONSCIOUS MIND IS TOUCHING IT! :vs:
Anyways, I hope the next update wont be another "TF2-CSGO Synchro" update like Gunn Mettle, I loved Gunn Mettle but after realizing that Valve had also another game with weapon skins, kill counters and the Kazotsky Kick on a radio playing in de_train, I got a bit panicky.
I'm not too keen on the jungle, because I actually find it a bit scary , but for the love of god I dont give a fuck at this point, just give me more weapons so I can cash my Apprenticeship Payment on! >_>
Only just realized this personally, the hell happened to ctf_sawmill? I loved that map! Is it still in the game files, just not on matchmaking? Why did they remove it from matchmaking?
In lieu of one or maybe two large major updates a year, would you guys prefer many smaller updates every ~2 months? A balancing patch here, a new map realease there, etc...
This might keep the playerbase interested but I think many of us would miss the big events after a year or two.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but were these them VNN emails some where talking about before the update ?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but were these them VNN emails some where talking about before the update ?
I have a hard time trying to understand your sentence but the VNN emails are supposed to be answered before the Update.
However given the fact that we have not seen an answer in like, a month, many believe they will answer them later/never/forgot about them.
Remember that mym had a 4 year development, sure it had a lot going especialy with matchamaking but a whole year for basicaly gun mettle 3 is a bit disturbing.

4 year development? You mean the quickplay beta thing? I find that connection laughable.
quickplay beta
If I could go back in time and stop Quickplay from ever being implemented, I would.
This game was so much better when every server was a community server. I sorely miss those days.
How do you prevent people from abusing events and achievments on community servers?
What happens to events in general if valve servers cease to exist?
Events were fine before Quickplay and Valve servers were ever a thing. Events didn't get locked to Valve servers until the implementation of contracts with Gun Mettle.
Also, achievement servers have existed forever and will likely continue to exist forever. Hell, apps like Steam Achievement Manager exist that allow you to get them all in just one click.
Achievements don't actually matter, anyways.
What matters is the actual gameplay and how you experience it, and community servers with regulars and custom maps was miles ahead of any matchmaking-based gameplay you get today. Players usually had a high level of skill, would learn each other's habits over time (and encourage more counterplay based on that), the banter was excellent, and you could make some real friends over time.
Now it's just a bunch of matchmaking games where nobody communicates, the entire team is carried by the top 3 people on the scoreboard, and the games are occasionally hijacked by one-sided 6-stacks or outright hackers given free reign.
Community TF2 may have been less "convenient" than Quickplay/Matchmaking TF2, but it was better in virtually every other way.
Let's say this reaction roadmap is true. Are we supposed to put on our plastic smiles and support it if the update sucks? I'd also doubt that if it's real, the team themselves put it in place. The few left remaining clearly have passion for the game. I wouldn't be surprised if the higher ups at Valve are overseeing the team to see if it's financially viable to support the game any further if the update gets panned.
This then leads to more speculation. If the roadmap idea is true, and the update reception is negative, what will it mean for the future? Will the community take the torch? Will the game be left to die? Will it only get critical support to patch security exploits?
Other than the update blowing us away, the best case scenario pipe dream would be for Valve to release the code to the public and let the community fix the issues. Let's hope it doesn't come to this and the update is spectacular.
the roadmap thing is complete bullshit, lets pretend that tfteam did literally intended to cease development of the game based on how unsuccessful this update was, why would they ever tell that to anyone outside of valve? tf2 is only financially viable because of its economy, if you start loosely talking about how the game's pretty much dead you're going to destroy people's confidence in the game and it's economy.
nobody outside of valve would ever need that information, if that roadmap was a genuine plan we would never hear about it because it would just slowly happen, the game would just fade away like left 4 dead or some other valve title.
i'm 100% confident that the roadmap leak is entirely fabricated, i wouldn't be surprised if the game's "death" was more on the horizon than not simply because of how old it is but i find it hard to believe that it's this close, especially considering they planned the heavy update just ahead of this one.

I would say community servers have their advantages and disadvantages.
I imagine with the game going F2P Valve didn't want a bunch of new players to join an awful community server and quit the game forever, so building their own server network with default TF2 makes a lot of sense (not to mention that honestly even in 2011 most game developers/publishers were moving away from community hosted servers). When you're paying for the game your more likely to stick to the game (though I'm sure some people who bought the game were turned away by bad community servers).

The current valve servers aren't anymore places where you gather up as friends. You rarely see any of the less popular maps because vote system is available and there is always the map that just got played or more popular one. The valve servers serve their purpose, to provide players together and a server. It's a bit better than the "lets host server on some players own machine and throw people into it" but still very flawed system.
If it were a community server, a lot of people would stick around even to the more unpopular map, because they have friends there playing and having fun and there is gonna be better map after that anyway. While taking players off completely from community servers, valve basically killed nearly every server where players gathered to have fun together. You cant do that now in a valve server, even ad-hoc is disabled so no way your friends come to the same game as you are!
Nothing can be done anymore to fix this, all those dead community servers that are still around and empty, arent going to populate anymore unless this game gets really popular like it did back when it went free to play. Only way that might happen is more frequent actual content updates. I'm not talking about update every week or two weeks but every 2-3 months something new playable would be nice, other than just some cosmetic crate. That way players don't get exhausted from too many updates but the current way is too less updates and too long timeframe.
When you think about it Valve's approach to this Update in connection to Meet Your Match, it makes a lot of sense to be attempting to reinvent the wheel with this.
MYM completely fucked the public rep of TF2 in the eyes of the generic dude, in July 2017 - when you heard about TF2, it was that valve fucked it, and that it was "dead" now - there was even a highly upvoted "out of the loop" thread on reddit where people asked, why everyone calls tf2 shit now.
This Update is supposed to be the big ol' savior that saves tf2's rep - the Update that people in the future will call "The Update that saved tf2!"
Instead of releasing a decently sized Update in Smissmas, which would be a good Update, but people would still think "oh but tf2 is dead" - they decided to release a gigantic, hopefully fantastic Update - the true "gamechanger" one.
And for this route to function, all that matters is the quality of the Update, and not when it will launch, if it is August, or next week(please).
In my dream, a "minor" update was released, containing the two cosmetic cases for the update and all the balance changes (besides pyro stuff). But the update's size was 253 MB (i just had this dream like 2 minutes ago, it was really vivid). Then the dream turned into this weird thing where I was doing my job naked..
however they believe weapons bans can be avoided with proper rebalancing.
well okay but there's 2 problems here
making terrible changes like claid or bfb or etc
needing 12+ months to make the smallest change
:downs:

we can only hope that after this update things start to change. the whitelist will have new bans when valve buffs the "useless" weapons just a bit too much, so valve scales back those items, etc etc, until there are no bans and everything is balanced just right

Man, I wished valve finished the assets of asteroid so at least they can be used by mappers.
So how thinks next week is the week ?
Agree = Agree
Disagree = later ( August )

you all are forgetting that community servers had a lot of the !unusual shit that in valve's eyes is loss of profit.
and there are still a lot of those networks, namely almost all .tf communities, that run the bullshit premium mods and !unusual / !festive / !australium.
Valve won't exactly support the community server until that garbage is taken out. And judging by the fact some servers are reported to have bypassed the module valve put in to detect !ws (CS:GO), it's gonna look really grim for community servers from now on.

Would it help if Valve released some sort of server command that made it possible for community servers to be in the casual queue, but they only get this "tag/command/privilege" if they are completely Vanilla except maybe some chat plugins that show the server name when you join
Most of the stream was my thoughts on different things I've been told over the last year and a half from a bunch of different places. I was told about the roadmap, however I didn't think it was so believable that I put it in a full video. Historically streams got very little attention, even if the title was click bate, however this seems to be people taking all of my ramblings as confirmed truth because I didn't have my "speculation" sign up in the corner. I was using the stream to filter through my own ideas to get a refined script written, but it appears to all have backfired. I am sorry for the whole mess, and I will answer any questions is necessary.
Is it at all possible for you to delineate what is specifically conjecture versus information gleaned from an official source? Most importantly, the information concerning Valve's future support of the game.
Is it at all possible for VNN to delineate what is specifically conjecture versus information gleaned from an official source?
Yes, and I do it in every video, however I have always used streams to filter through thoughts. However, the community is starved for content and I didn't delineate. It was a huge mistake on my part.
So how thinks next week is the week ?

So the Update can only release next week or august?

The one thing people want to know about is *where* this entire "Roadmap" thing spawned from. Who told you this?
So the Update can only release next week or august
well in 2 weeks today valve are moving office, so realistically yeah
I don't fault you, Tyler, I merely share in everyone's confusion over the ordeal, and would greatly appreciate some clarity. Am I to understand then that at no point did Dave or any other Valve employee outline a doomsday scenario involving the end of official support?
