Why does everyone think jungle will improve comp? It's the mode literally no one outside of levels 1-3 are playing. Plus, the bad taste from MYM is still in people's mouths over this mode basically fucking up the entire game for months.
Why would they update a mode no one plays or cares for? It would be like pushing a pass time update right now.

We are going to get an elo system
Competitive has been broken for the past few days, ranks are bugged and no rank progress is recorded or even seen on the scoreboard.
Yea, I and some friends played a game against a spinbot team and lost but we didnt lost any "progress"

Because, like it or not, TF2 will only grow if Valve supports competitive. And Valve wants their own system of competitive to be the one everyone is using. If Valve 1. balances weapons properly, 2. makes the system actually work, and 3. creates an incentive for playing, the mode will flourish, and people will play. The bad taste will go away if people realize they can get stuff from playing the mode, and the mode is actually made decent.
I'm happy that Pyro is getting an update because he's seriously the least fun class to play against.
Pyro's two playstyles are W+M1 and crit gimmick/combos. It's infuriating to play against since you can't really do much against it.

Competitive is only small part of the success and game like TF2 just is more fun without the tryhard mode for majority of the people i've met and played with. I would say that if Valve would offer more playable content that ties the players to do things, such as gain achievements on certain maps or play towards certain goal. Sort of like storymode or similiar that keeps them interested. Also, steady new actual playable content would be great. The 6 month pauses on those really are annoying. Each time i saw bugfix update, i hoped for more but never got any. I get hhat releasing stuff too frequently causes exhaustion but 6 months, even 7 is way too long time without anything new to play on.

He's still one of the two (spy) weakest classes in the game, though. Fixing his weakness and his annoyance is something that can be done simultaneously, and I hope Valve manages to do it right.
I still hold hopes that they find a decent way to fix Pyro's problems not just on a gameplay level, but on design. Namely, the "Flamethrower Mojo" issue and how your latency dictates flame distance.
I've seen flames not touching people at all and they somehow magically get burned, while others have the flames right in someone's face and nothing happens as they proceed to get mauled.
No the datagrams system isn't fully implemented, currently it just helps finding a game, you're supposed to be connecting to any server through a node, not directly
say you have high ping to stockholm, if no match is available on a better server, you'd connect to the server in stockholm (sto) through the node in say france (vie) which gives you much better results, especially if you live near a node where no TF2 servers exist (only TF2 servers in europe are in madrid, stockholm and luxembourg)

The way fire hitboxes actually act is actually really cool, based on your movement (use tf_debug_flamethrower 1 in a listen server). But the fire that everyone sees is completely different, so people don't see the fire that's coming at them, and the Pyro doesn't see that they're actually being completely inaccurate. The visible fire needs to be attached to the fire hitboxes that currently exist, and any discrepancies between people of different connection strengths need to be fixed. But I really like how fire acts right now, irrespective of serverside bugs.

Because competitive would be groundbreaking and amazing for the game if it actually worked. Lots of people care about comp, the current comp however isn't even enough to be called a competitive mode.
The elo system + placement matches should do wonders for the mode's popularity.
-----------------------------------
Also I can confirm that competitive atm does not function, no rank whatsoever is processed. Wonder if this can be thrown into the same box as the casual levels issue, or if this is another sign for the update coming this week, as it revamps comp.
When valve makes Competitive Matchmaking playable, what would be the incentive to play it?

Same as with CS:GO, elo ranks actually mean something while grinding ranks from the start don't.

Because the game will never grow farther than it has gotten without competitive. The economy is the only true thing keeping it near relevancy. I love the game at its core but it's hard to argue against me. There is no other sense of progression, community servers are dead, and the game is rarely updated.
Competitive left a bad taste because it was handled god awfully. That doesn't mean it's a write-off mode. Competitive can still be done right and reintroduced properly, even if it shot itself in the foot and lost a portion of its potential audience.
We know the update is going to be competitively focused based on the rebalances and interviews discussing placements and weapon/class bans alone. The only question is whether or not they actually know what to do this time around.
If we're lucky valve will do something to push the envelope with this update. Not just release some better weapons and placements and call it a day. Host a tournament, create a competitive incentive, get people to try out a functional and appealing version of competitive.
That's how you save the game from its current stagnation.
I'd love to get into competitive, not bashing 6s but it's not my cup of tea with the current state on no class limits and weapons in general. Soda scunts rain free there.
I can see competitive becoming enjoyable for even the most casual of players if it's handled with care by not just TFTeam, but by Valve.
With ranks that matter and aren't grinded for, with items to reward those for general play time and continued progression in ranks and skill.
I'm no expert on how it'd be done or what could be done to make it that way, but if there's anything to redeem TF2 and bring it back to solid ground is a damn good competitive mode where all levels of play can be found in their respectful ranks.
Can today be the day?

lol funni
We're thinking that it's gonna be an "announced-tuesday-released-thursday" style update. THINKING.
Can today be the day?
By complete theory, yes.
If I was in your shoes, though, I wouldn't get my hopes up today. Monday Blog Posts are rare. Wednesday on the other hand is a lot more common.
Can today be the day?
If it is a 3-day or upwards update, today or tomorrow followed up with a Thursday patch would be the most optimistic foreseeable outcome.

Update is already anounced, they could just release it without prior notice
...right?

I remember Gun Mettle Appearing out of nowhere without a single hint that it was coming. Took me by surprise massively, and I think that was the first time TF2 annouced an Update via a notification sent by the TF2 Steam Hub.

If we are basing likelihoods on previous years, then our biggest release change is actually around mid august, because we've had 3 major updates drop between august 13th and august 19th,and 0 major updates drop between july 9th and august 12th.
However, those are all years 2012 and backwards so I don't consider that strong evidence to base off of.
If we're going off of everything we've learned so far, then our best close chance would probably be this tuesday. But there's really nothing making this tuesday different from the next tuesday or the tuesday after that. I say tuesday under the assumption it's a multi day update planning to release on thursday, which is again only an estimate based on knowing how large content drops work.
So realistically an announcement today isn't off the table, but there's nothing to base an assumption off of besides "there's not necessarily much reason NOT to" aside from monday being a potentially slow retention day. This is also just my opinion but I feel like valve probably wouldn't make the announcement come from left field, I feel like we'd be aware at least through some sort of teaser earlier in the day, and given it's pushing 4PM at their office I feel like the chance of that is gone for today.

Wasn't there countdown page, just like for Love & War?

2cities was also very random and fast
Honestly, this is such a long content drought, that im surprised that most of players are still somewhat patiently waiting. I'm having a sense of fear that if this takes any longer then the summer update might not bring that many new and returning players, unless it is really huge and good as everyone's hoping it is.
I'm really hoping that im wrong, but then again this community has huge expectations from TF2 team, and theres still a chance that the update is still somewhat "meh", and doesn't live up to its expectations.

The TF Team can only fuck this up by releasing this Update at the end/outside of Summer vacations. For most affected, we are already mid-summer vacations, so from even a simple business standpoint you better release it this week.

This is the TF Team
They have managed to fuck things up in ways we had no idea that couldve been fucked up before, and judging by how many people want this to be a huge update, it's gonna be the case again.
I hope that when the Jungle/Pyro updates finally drops, there's a secret page. It could be like the "Gentle Manne's Service Medal" page in the Classless Update, or the "Detonator" page in the Uber Update.
The secret update pages were always the best. It was always nice to find those.
I wonder what the secret dropped class of the pyro update will be?
I'm thinking the sniper.

If Valve does a secret page I could see it being a teaser for the Heavy update.
