Knowing how we've been starved for content, people are gonna want game-changing content compared to event-centric content. Scream Fortress is fun and all, but it doesn't really need a heavy focus compared to the Heavy pack. (Pun not intended)
With the TF Team wanting to keep the game alive and bringing it into the competitive spotlight, they would want to put all of their time into the next major (likely competitive focused) update instead of a yearly event. Personally, I would have no problem with another 2015 style Scream Fortress as long as they have some quality control on what actually goes into the update.
I dont know how long you have been playing TF2 but they used to be able to do 2 big updates on a year + halloween without no problems. Even more at some years than others and game was even less popular (less people playing) at some of those times that it was after free to play years. But obviously from my part it was great that they wanted to turn to community at 2015 and since it was so positive experience, they did that again for 2016. I would be glad if they do that again this year but i would also like to see something new from Valve too. Community resources are kind of limited and i know personally there's not much we can add. I have something in my sleeve but it's not as major as having a new monster or something.
Something happened within Valve some point that halted the update cycle bit far from what it used to be. Propably people moved off the team inside the company or something. I know 2 people i had dealings with regarding running servers for the game earlier, who left the team. Fletcher, who was kind enough to supply beta builds for srcds and fix some bugs works now on Dota2 and Jon who had part in developing replay feature, has also left the team. No one has touched it since i think, and it has still issues that break replays so they are broken even after download from servers. It must be true that the cactus canyon or asteroid will not be touched unless their creator does it. Isn't powerhouse proof of this? I heard it was supposed to be launch map for the game but someone rolled their desk away and back again, and away again.
I think Robin also wanted some change and moved on. There's also several others who were in the team that are no longer in it that i know of. Since then we've been seeing less content appearing from Valve directly than before. Maybe it's something happening inside the company that they wont publicly talk but i think there is a lack of people who can dedicate more time to the TF2 development than for other things they are required to do within Valve. They just don't talk about these things aloud.
There is actually alot more they can do than just a simple case, knowing how much they enjoy the community content
- Back in 2012 (around Pyromania), they used to add around ~3 new community hats every week to be sold onto the Mann Co. Store / Crafted
- They could revive the Community Map Pack
- Follow through with the "Monthly Community Taunts" they promised back in 2015
- Release weapon balance changes in small bug-fix patches (though they could still keep some for major updates)
So, they could easily do more than just a spring cosmetic case.
Gabe said in one interview that the community does 10 times more content than Valve does. However, is all game worthy content is another thing. I've wanted to see something added spring for years because the delay between smissmass and summer update is long and they never release anything at that time, except bug fixes. It would be logically a smart move to put something out at that time because players expect and strive new stuff to use and play on. Valve does work in Valve time and their own style so its a miracle if something does happens next spring.

The fact they weren't already aware of and finished fixing this is fucking pathetic. Unless the team is aware and Eric happened not to, in which case Lord knows why it hasn't been fixed yet.

Major Update Speculation: Even the Devs are Speculating!
Although real talk I really hope that's the case, because if it isn't we are going to be in a world of hurt when this update finally drops. I mean, what else have they not heard about that's still going on?

Back when Pyro/Jungle were separate things, and Jungle seemed to be a community update, I was really hoping for Jungle to hit in March or so for exactly that reason.
In the past, we had 6 month gaps between major updates, sans Halloween. In 2015, this was subverted by the Invasion update landing between Gun Mettle and Tough Break, with the added bonus of it leading directly into Halloween 2015, which was still an excellent update.
The latter half of 2015 is still perhaps one of my favorite times to have been a TF2 player, because it always felt like awesome stuff was happening or was just around the corner. Tough Break disappointed some on account of just being Gun Mettle: Now With More Gun Mettle, but I still enjoyed it because Gun Mettle was a good update. I don't feel like TF2 is a game that would ever suffer from a problem of too much of a good thing.
Instead, it just seems to suffer a problem of too little good things. Having Community updates land between major updates to tide us over and keep the game feeling fresh year-round now seems like a pipedream two years later, and it saddens me immensely that latter half 2015 just ended up being a peek at What Could Have Been.
It's been well over a year since MyM was released to outright backlash at worst or mixed feelings at best. It's been well over a year since any sweeping, meaningful changes or content additions have been made to the game. Sans an underwhelming Halloween update, a disappointing Smissmass "update" and an aptly-named Rainy Day Cosmetic Case, TF2 the game has seen nothing worth noting since mid-2016.
And god, you know, it's so fucking disappointing to see things come to this. I want to be excited about the Jungle Update, I really do, but I have no earthly idea when it's coming and to be frank, none of the rest of you do either. There's nothing to "speculate" over here, because we aren't being given new information with which to speculate and we aren't being given any communication with which to interpret.
The only speculation I have to give, and this isn't really speculation so much as bitter fact, is that there's jack shit we can do about any of this. The update will hit when it hits, and at this point there's no precedent for how late this one is, no information that tells us when it's actually coming beyond a vague "soon", which could mean anything coming from Valve, and there's no game files or ARG for us to pick through to find out what's coming.
Not to rain on anyone's parade or say that ya'll can't be optimistic because I'm not, but come on, guys. Tonight was The Night 21 nights ago. Telling yourself over and over again that Today's The Day or This Week's The Week isn't going to do anything but make the wait feel longer than it already is.
The days of Valve releasing content for this game in a relatively-predictable, timely manner are long past us.

Yeah, i kinda saw end part of 2015 something amazing because a lot of new maps were added to the game and there was lots of things to keep me personally interested and playing. I always strive for new maps, even if they aren't mine but those new are always something fresh, especially now that i haven't ran them all in advance on our community servers.
A month ago i would have guessed that the update was coming anytime soon but since then i've seen some amazing maps being added to the workshop and with the recommendation from valve for people to submit their maps to the workshop and mails that say keep working on the maps, i can easily see them taking extra time and letting more community people to finish up their maps.
If the update arrives, at this rate, it's going to be August.
Shall we ring the blog-post bell?

Not for like 3 more hours.
Shall we ring the blog-post bell?
No, it's too early to ring the Bell.
Oh God, I hope, we'll get something today.

Same here, for the content obviously but also because we're all slowly going insane.

Oh I completely agree with you,but there's still some hope for this month.
Today seems most probable for the week. The wait has culled my hype but it's maybe for the better untill another sign shows itself to us.
I'd sooner guess next week is most probable; now knowing what we do about how the move would probably not slow down things as much as we had initially guessed.
If it's this week though, I'd be hyped like crazy.
Ring ring ring. Tomorrow, maybe?
You know, at this point the community's frustation with the wait for the update must have been seen by valve/tf2 team, so they're either still doing some adjustments to the balance changes or whatever else, or just waiting with releasing it on the right day. Most of the maps made by mappers are practically done, and im sure they had enough time to take the feedback they got since blog post into consideration and test it. Something important must be holding them back from releasing it, or they're waiting for right day (if it's this week of course.)
What if Valve is pushing it back a day more for every time we guess the pyro update is gonna hit today?
Oh like how we're still paying our penance for every fat joke about Gaben with Half Life 3 delays?
The fact they weren't already aware of and finished fixing this is fucking pathetic. Unless the team is aware and Eric happened not to, in which case Lord knows why it hasn't been fixed yet.
It could be as simple as Eric doesn't want to say that they know of the issue or that they have fixed it, as they don't want to give any hints as to when it'll come out.
Oh like how we're still paying our penance for every fat joke about Gaben with Half Life 3 delays?
I'm just trying to rationalize at this point, this update drought is getting to me
Oh like how we're still paying our penance for every fat joke about Gaben with Half Life 3 delays?
Well according to the TF2 history page, there have been 621 updates, which is divisible by 3. I bet R/tf2 would have a field day over that little tidbit of information.
There hasn't been much to speculate on lately so have a completely baseless leak.

Personally the main reason I think it's bullshit is because it implies they worked on the Heavy update at the same time as the Pyro update for no good reason, even though Pyro won.
As cool as that would be I can't see the TF2 team releasing the Heavy update before this Christmas. I could see another war happening eventually though.
The fact they weren't already aware of and finished fixing this is fucking pathetic. Unless the team is aware and Eric happened not to, in which case Lord knows why it hasn't been fixed yet.
Dude calm down that's just Eric's default response to people sending him bugs

I believe it's the Engineer, Medic and Scout remaining on the classes that haven't been to "war" yet.
I believe it's the Engineer, Medic and Scout remaining on the classes that haven't been to "war" yet.
And Scout most certainly does not need more content.
I believe it's the Engineer, Medic, and Scout remaining on the classes that haven't been to "war" yet.
I always liked the idea of the medic and engineer going to war against each other. They're both support classes, as well as being the eggheads of the team. If pyro and heavy can go against each other then I support this.
I always liked the idea of the medic and engineer going to war against each other. They're both support classes, as well as being the eggheads of the team. If pyro and heavy can go against each other then I support this.
Yeah I have a feeling if they did another one it would be this, especially since both classes can have such a vital role on the team.
And then once medic and Engie finish their war sometime in 2020 we can finally get the "scout vs the world" update.
I really hope that, to reignite the hype for the Jungle update, they add one new map or crate of cosmetics into the game every day for a week, and on the 7th and final day, the update goes live.
How many days do you all think the update is going to be?
I'm hoping for 4 minimum

spoiler alert: scout wins
