This is indeed kind of worrying.
I wonder if this will hurt the top-notch lines and general writing of tf2 in the long-run.
Probably not, given how Sheila has been bearing the brunt of the work for quite some time it seems.
Im sure that if valve cant afford to move staff from one team to another they may consider hiring more general staff
Is RD_Asteroid really looked at that fondly? I thought they had given up on it because it was very likely they didn't like it as a gameplay concept. I wouldn't mind if they just wrapped up the lore in a comic and called it a day, or release cactus canyon instead.
Why would they have given up on it when it is essentially complete? The only thing that was left was the art pass of one of the bases. (The blu one I think.)

Yeah, if they really didn't like it that much as a concept, or if the community reception were that terrible, I would've expected them to stop developing it back when it had no proper textures yet and when they were still meddling with the base layouts and the gamemode rules...
It really is 90 percent finished - most of the artpass already done, new textures, new assets, new HUD elements, plenty of voice lines etc. And the community reception really wasn't that bad, plenty of people thought it was a more dynamic and versatile take on 2Fort-style CTF...
The only reason most players stopped playing it on Beta servers gradually was because it literally went 1.5 years without being finished, and a map that was only available on Beta servers was bound to have less exposure/popularity in the long run than finished maps that are/were featured on 'live' Valve Quickplay servers...
It's so odd they never released it, really, after all that work and coming so close to being completed. Even if it was destined to follow in the steps of Doomsday and Standin and other not-well-received unique maps/modes, I don't know why they couldn't just finish it and release it at that point. Would've seen at least a few months of popularity as part of a major update.
It really is possible that there was a major change in the composition/philosophy of the TF2 team post-2014. Gun Mettle with its obvious CS:GO-borrowed elements was quite different in many ways, and it seems whoever is in charge of making the big decisions for this game decided that the open Beta maps programme was a bad idea and just canned it, despite Asteroid being so close to the finish line. But then, Mannpower (who was a deeply flawed and half-baked idea in the eyes of many) continued to get Beta support and development for a further year (and was eventually finished, for what it's worth), as did PASS Time (though that was an outsourced developer).
Sudden realisation: what if that jungle map they teased is cactus canyon with jungle artpass?
What if the jungle map is Moonbase, but they replace all the robots with monkeys, all the power cores with bananas and change the map into gathering bananas to put into your banana horde?
So is there no one in the team that also contributes to the tf2 comic?
I'm sure they have some input but I doubt most of the TF2 team are comedy writers so they probably leave the vast majority of the writing to Valve's writers.

Given the super basic art pass Cactus Canyon had I suppose it could be reworked to the Jungle map. I really doubt Asteroid would be reworked into a Jungle map considering the art pass was 90% done.
Considering the fact that cactus canyone was a product of the beta map test period im not sure if that is the case, but the team has shown its resourcefulness in the past.
I miss cactus canyon :frown:
I too miss Catus Canyon. Here is hoping it is in the near future along with removing random crits.
I wonder if Cactus Canyon/Asteroid is in the same situation Powerhouse was, those working on it left the team and no one knows what to do with them now

do you think the community would be upset if that happened? I think that'd be awesome to have two jungle maps come in, one being cactus canyon with a cosmetic change to be jungle themed.
Honestly i think theres already alot of desert themed map, i hope the jungle maps come and it doesnt become just "that one jungle map that exists" kinda deal.
Do people really like Cactus Canyon or is this just the fact that it's pretty much already made and a new map is a new map? Just curious.

I really like the layout of it. Especially the last point when you have to blow up the bomb with the train.
I just hope that the skybox is full of cactuses.

like the map is at the bottom of a canyon overlooked by giant cacti?
that'd be amazing
I don't know if anyone noticed, but it looks like there's stuff going on in the Valve store's TF2 section as of recent:

Personally, i don't care about map's theme, theme is just an eye candy, i would be happy to see CC layout with any theme

I must have it...The bread reskins in my opinion are some of the best reskins in the game.

A melee weapon and a hat in one bundle, nice!

Didn't they mess with throwable items physics though?

I have no clue. But I am just referring to the visual aspect of the items. I don't know if it was buggy or not.

Quick Poll (I am actually interested in peoples answer for this):
Did you like the whole concept of using 3 hats to make the bread box?
The bread box didnt require a key and allowed players to get a bread reskin (small chance of strange)
If people didnt know^
Agree is yes
Disagree is no
I'm still wondering about DRiller saying "It's one of the biggest updates we've done". That's a pretty big claim, there've been some pretty huge updates like MvM.
How long has DRiller been working on TF2 for? "We've" can mean different things because obviously devs come and go
Also, if it really is the biggest update we're going to see, it needs to have everything. MvM stuff, more maps, new weapons, taunts, voice lines, the new SFM etc.
So Im gonna assume for a fairly long time.
It's not going to be THE biggest, it's gonna be one of the biggest.
Besides, more maps, new weapons, new SFM is already confirmed. Voice lines and taunts are a given either way.
Just dont expect MvM content.

I'm not sure why people here praise the MvM update so much. I thought it was pretty lackluster in general. It added an alright gamemode, but besides that, it did very little to impact the gameplay overall.

The ARG and long term hints surrounding it were pretty cool.
Hell, they hinted at it in 2010 on a page in the Engineer Update, that's 2 years before release and they released subsequent hints "auto-borax" signs, hints in maps.
That kind of stuff is fun.

Driller has been at Valve over 20 years now. So yeah, kind of long time working with the game industry and propably TF2 nearly or more than half of that.
Remembering the MvM ARG makes me miss that sorta thing, I know it must take some real effort and planning to pull off something like that.
But that sort of stuff got people excited and speculating about an update that they didn't know anything about aside from 3 letters and a bunch of blurry pictures!
I know it's probably an issue with the small team they have that it'd take a lot of more effort than before to pull something as magnificently mysterious again, but hopefully we can see something like that again someday.

Actually the earliest remnants we saw of MvM was back in 2009 when the Spy vs Sniper update hit. There were traces stat modifications that could be attached to weapons. Instead people jumped the gun and assumed it'd have been a monstrosity that'd imbalance pvp before forgetting about it later that year when word of the Engineer update was fresh in people's minds.
The next we saw of it was the Scout arm blueprint in the Engineer Update teaser, which people saw and assumed would've been a robot arm for Engineer. That became the Gunslinger when the tf team took note of the community's fixation on it. And it's reasonable to assume that the Southern Hospitality was originally going to have stats along the same lines, since we knew the PDQ was a thing in closed beta testing, but suddenly supplanting its niche with the Gunslinger meant it needed something else. Which is a reasonable assumption to why it wound up being so lackluster with comparably little development time left to design a new one.

I'm fairly sure "new SFM" hasn't been confirmed for the Jungle Update/Pyro Pack Boogaloo. An SFM has been rumoured to be in the making, but I don't think it's tied to the Pyro update?
