The drop system currently doesn't make any sense, nobody likes it and valve doesn't make any money from it, it could really use a rework
Yeah I feel like the current weapon drop/achievement unlock system worked much better when there were far fewer weapons in the game and not 100+ unlockable weapons. TF2 is a very fair F2P game but honestly the current drop system is probably the one aspect of the game that feels unfair to new players since getting a weapon you want is pretty much a crapshoot without spending money.
One of the things I do is help out new players who want a specific weapon, if I see someone who's new on a server I'm playing on and I have a spare of the weapon they want (which I usually do) I'll give it to them for free but of course my efforts are a drop in the ocean.
They should add a backpack page for weapons only, and make it so everytime you get a new level you unlock a new weapon. They can either make a list or make it random. These weapons can't be traded or crafted or anything, they're just like stock, and they don't take space in your actual inventory, just like in CSGO.
Something like this could potentially work though Valve would need to buy all the weapon models made by the community instead of sharing the sales through the store. Perhaps make it so you get a new weapon for a specific class after every X achievements or X hours.
If you watch the video from Jewlander where he talks about his visit to Valve he says the TF2 team has considered re-doing the economy from the ground up (no doubt taking into consideration the lessons they've learned from TF2, CSGO and DOTA2. After all TF2 was Valve's first in game economy and hindsight is 20/20). Removing weapon drops/metal from the game and moving to an economy based on hats and weapon reskins feels like it would be a good idea to me but honestly I'm not enough of an expert on the economy to say for sure.
Quite some time ago it was found out that if you blocked connection to valve servers you could wear conflicting hats. This was because of a programming oversight, cosmetics took their restrictions from your game_items.txt if valve servers were blocked. So you could simply delete all the restrictions from your file and Wear conflicting miscs online.
So obviously since I don't give a shit about hats I wondered if you could modify weapons this way, and you could! Only on servers you hosted yourself, though, luckily.
The first thing I did was just play with some concepts I had in mid, I made the Etranger give you health instead of cloak (and dubbed it the Healthranger), I made the Enforcer shoot weak demo pills instead of hits can bullets, fun stuff.
I even wrote a guide about it on SPUF which is now lost. Also I think they fixed it so that editing the text file in any way will simply crash tf2.
You can do this with Sourcemod and TF2Items plugin. For more advanced things you can use TF2Attributes plugin and even write your own code making new features. For example, you can make a Flare Jumper for Pyro.
I run a server like this myself, which has seen a nice population boost lately.
Why bother with incentives at all if "Fuck the economy" is the prevailing mindset among you? Having something tangible alone should be enough incentive as it shakes things up, but with the staggering number of people who do nothing but goldbowl and orangetower, that statement doesn't apply to a large quantity of players.
Because the economy is the reason we accept items with such rediculously low drop rates as the normal.
A good chunk of cosmetic content that most players will never have a chance to even obtain because they're not actively invested in their virtual tf2 stocks.
You know most games I see get riddiculed for having payed gamble boxes with super rare "Assassin Grade Unusual Factory New Strange Stat Clock" items, but because tf2 is half economy simulator it just seems to be accepted.
Remember when crafting was a thing? Fuck that, we need rare shiny items.
ah yes fuck that thing that's kept the game alive for the past 5 years, fuck all of those people with inventories full of items reliant on a sustained economy to maintain value
Given the current situation, "Kept the Game Alive" is a pretty generous phrase.

Gotta disagree with this- TF2 is stagnating, not dying. Big difference. I already did all the research and graphs on this some MUS's back, but the finding was that TF2 isn't dramatic player drops, it's just keeping a relatively-low average during periods where nothing has come out for a while.
I really didn't look into this extensively, but for a long time, I was used to seeing TF2 sitting at a solid 3rd place at the games with most online players on Steam list, just under CSGO and DOTA. For a while now, it's around 5-6th. I might be really off, but wasn't the average player count around 70-80k about a year ago?

It has dropped, to be fair, but that seems to be more because of the...well, year-long meaningful content drought we seem to be in right now. I wouldn't go so far to say as the game is "dying", though.
That is still very impressive when you think about how old the game is and how little valve does to promote TF2.
It's not dying, just stagnating.
Which is also bad, don't get me wrong.

I didn't say that verbatim, but you pretty much just rephrased what I already said...
Just please, this week, TF Team, throw us a bone here. It has been exactly 300 days since Team Pyro won. Blog Post. Props. Emails.
Trees being spawned by teleporters.
Maybe any hints when the summer sale starts
That's already been leaked, June 22 to July 5.

He's saying hints for the new update during the steam sale period.
I don't want the economy to be removed, especially the Godsend that is the steam market which allows me get stuff without dealing with the scum of humanity that are TF2 traders.

mvm, scout mains, demo mains and the rest of the playerbase
To be fair, the current economy how it works is much more friendly than it used to be, there's trade bots now and a bunch of other stuff along with prices being cheap, if it's keeping stuff alive whatever, I just hated what the game became in the beginning of it, things have smoothed out quite a bit now though.

I want to believe but I also don't, I'd be incredibly surprised if Valve makes any appearance at E3 this year

I'd like to imagine how R/TF2 would react to full sized tree props flying out of teleporters like bread.
Welp,Geel just got perma banned.

I could say the sky is blue and you would take offense at it.
Trading with human beings, haggling, doing the whole rigmarole with contacting them, and then making sure you're getting the best deal, is a pain in the ass.
The steam community market was a great thing Valve did to open up buying items for players, I would love to see more progress being made to make the economy more inclusive and accessible to new players.

Well he pretty much asked for the ban.
Also I would love trees coming out of teleporters for a short while just for the lulz.
Or trees suddenly appearing around the skyboxes of maps they clearly shouldn't be in.
wow the only person with actually good, educated opinions got banned
yowza

yeah i mean, as i said in a post a few days ago im sure there's some cool traders, ive even interacted with some pretty cool people that trade tf2 items as their main hobby adn they're nice guys
the problem is most tf2 traders are children. greedy, easily confused by basic human interaction and frankly stupid children. it's factually difficult to interact with most people in the trading community because they're snappy, aggressive and see themselves as super rich kingpins despite their inventories being worth less than $5k
