if you have an updated psp the cost of flashing is about the same,
PSP
the pandora battery-20$
magic memory stick-20$
DS
flash card-20$
8gb sd-20$
DS can be less if you want less memory.
Nintendo: Sony:
DS "fat" PSP
DS Lite PSP Go
DSi
DSi XL
3DS
You have more options with nintendo and you can base which one you buy based on what you need, (Cost, do i want a camera?, size, 3D capabilites)
I go with DS.
Ds
I voted DS, although it's a bit of a shitty vote since I've never even used a PSP. I like my DS, used to play Mario Kart DS multiplayer at college in some free periods, great stuff that was.
What I really came to say is that your friend is an idiot. Gay is stupid, even by derogatory term standards. Ask him exactly what makes the DS gay. If he knows what he's talking about he'll tell you what he doesn't like. If he can't even do that, do me a favour and give him a slap.
PSP is far better, I have over 1Gb of Sega Genesis games, Open TTD, better variety of games (not some stupid childish crap) and better graphics and it works as a PS3 controller now and can play PSone games oh and there's a DS emulator on it in case I want to try out an interesting yet quickly boring DS game.

Yay, DS games without a touchscreen FTW! -__-
Graphics are not everything in the world dude, the DS is more fun and i like how it is like 100x easier to type on it which is nice if you have IRC homebrew
You cannot try out a DS game without a touchscreen, that takes out the point
psp due to older age group
Can't decide, I play both of them equally and it is awesome

I'm 21 and I like my DS more.
Maybe I should elaborate why I like the DS over the PSP. The DS is currently the only system that provides me with games that remind me of my childhood. In other words, GOOD 2D games that are new to me.
PSP. Hands fucking down.
No I'm not a Sony fan boy, I own both a NDS and a PSP. I have a flash cart for my DS and CFW on my PSP. You can do so much more with a PSP.
DS has 85 titles with a score over 80 on metacritic, compared to PSP's 67.

Eh? Please elaborate on what the PSP can do that the DS can't.
I have an M3 flash cart for my DS and I get all the emulators and apps that my PSP can get.
I have pretty much every decent PSP game in my collection, yet I've barely touched my PSP in at least 1-2 years. The DS has a much larger library of good, quality games.
PSP, but only when firmware hacked. The DS can play DS games and GBA games - the PSP can play PSP games as well as emulate GBA, SNES, PS1, Genesis, GBC, and NES games as well as have a decent web browser (Opera Mini through PSPKVM), watch movies in good quality, use youtube and other video sites (PSPTube), and other assorted stuff.
DS, but i've played like almost every single decent game there.
Sometimes i do wish i had a PSP though.
Having owned both I can safely say the PSP lost my interest after a while, the last new game I bought for it was Metal Gear Solid Portable OPs, and my next DS game should come on Friday. I think that shows which has kept my interest.

DS has emulators too.
Getting me a psp soon just for emulation and porn.
That said, I still voted for ds because of all the good titles that I would spend more time on (RPG, mindless casual games, dsiware).

Make sure you get an old hackable PSP and stick the latest M33 firmware and iR Shell on.

Getting mine from gamestop, are they the old ones? it's refurb, and what's iR shell?

It's been a long time since I've been "in the know" with the PSP hacking scene, but I'm pretty sure all PSPs that aren't the PSP Go can be hacked easily. Not sure what exploits are currently available and working, but a Pandora's Battery should work with every PSP model. (Don't quote me on this though)
iR Shell is a shell application for PSP, and for me it's almost essential. It can do pretty much everything... Here's a list of some of the things it does (taken from the official site):
iR Shell is a true multi-tasking shell which allows you to multi-task between a UMD game/homebrew/Backup ISO and any of the iR Shell built-in functions. On a PSP Slim you can even multi-task between two applications and iR Shell.
Allow listening to any of your favorite mp3s while playing UMD games, Backups or homebrew apps/games. You can optionally mute the game specific audio channels while playing mp3s. For example, you may want to play your own mp3s and mute the in-game music, but leave the game sound effects intact.
Display anything that iR Shell can launch on your PC Monitor with the help of RemoteJoy. Now with an increased RemoteJoy framerate up to around 30 FPS while running PS1 games.
Also supports the TV-OUT function found exclusively on the PSP Slim.
With the built-in file browser, you can browse files on your Memory Stick, UMD Disc, UMD Backups, your PC hard disks or DVDROM drives via USB or WiFi. You can even open files directly from these devices by a single click, such as viewing PMP Movies, Atrac3s, PMF movies, Backup ISOs, PS1 games, Text files, PDF files, Bitmap Photos, JPEGs, PNG photos, PBP PSP apps, ZIP & RAR archives and so on.
You can choose to install your PSP homebrew applications & files on your PC hard disk and access them via USB or WiFi on your PSP. This will eventually give your PSP unlimited storage access. With Infrastructure WiFi, you can access these homebrew apps or files on your home PC via WiFi hotspots through Internet.
Ability to launch and multi-task with PS1 games which were launched from within iR Shell. PS1 game launching is also possible via USB and WiFi by using a Host File System.
You can play 2-Player PSOne games also against another PSP wirelessly !
Backup UMD Video ISO support. You can launch Backup UMD Video ISOs straight from the file browser.
A built-in Universal iR Remote supporting over 2000 devices.
Additional iR Learning Mode. Just point your remote unit at the PSP and it will learn the iR code. This feature is only available under 5.xx EBOOT and not FW 1.5 mode.
Allow transfer of files between 2 PSPs via ad-hoc WiFi.
Ad-hoc WLAN connection to PC also possible
Advanced file management functions which can be performed on a complete directory tree.
Take snapshots/screen shots of any homebrews, UMD games, Backups, PS1 games, MP4 movies or UMD Movies.
Allow redirection of PSP keypad to PC Keyboard or PC Joystick via USB or WiFi. You can, for example, use a Xbox/Xbox360 gamepad with 2 analog sticks to control movement and aim in a FPS. No more awkward control with PSP buttons for aiming.
CPU clock settings, ranging from 100MHz to 333MHz.
Context Menu System from which you can choose the action to perform on the selected file for quicker manipulation of files in Directory View
Auto sleep mode while idle
Ability to turn on/off the PSP's LED lights for Power, Memory Stick & WiFi. This is good if you are annoyed by the MS LED constantly, for example. The orange charging LED isn't affected.
Supports Multi-tasking PRX Plugin System. A TXT/HTML reader (MT-Viewer) PRX plugin developed by korDen is included. It allows you to multi-task with TXT and HTML files such as walkthroughs in the background while simultaneously playing a UMD game
Fully skinnable interface with the ability to have a user supplied font file for each skin.
Support for Dark_AleX's Leda (“Legacy homebrew loader”) to load some 1.5 kernel homebrew apps and games under 5.xx kernel and EBOOT without needing 1.5 kernel add-on – applies to PSP Phat and PSP Slim
You can enable or disable the MagicGate Support on the PSP when using non-genuine Memory Stick (such as Photofast microSD to MSPD adapter). By disabling the MagicGate support, you will no longer experience the annoying pause in XMB, such as turning on the PSP, switching off USB mode from XMB, quiting game/homebrew back to XMB, entering XMB video directory, etc. You shouldn't disable the MagicGate Support if you're using a genuine Sony or Sandisk memory stick.
Comes with an extensive User Guide in familiar HTML format which you can easily browse and navigate.
I couldn't pick one over the other, I play Munster Hunter Freedom Unite constantly on PSP, and use it as a Flash stick all the time, but there are a tonne of great games on DS.
DS has emulators too.
Not very good ones
PSP would kick ass if they added another damn joystick. Then they would be able to have good FPS!
Not very good ones
only the SNES one was bad, the rest were fine.

OH wow! TOUCH SCREEN! THAT'S SO FUCKING AWESOME I MUST GET IT, MON GET ME DS IT HAS TOUCH SCREEN! That's why it's a kids thing, There's little kids everywhere using the DS and I found it extremely boring and the games are all the same! And even the best DS games get boring fast.
[editline]10:15AM[/editline]
Also there's rumour of a PSP2.
DS for Pokemon, ability to play some Metroids, and Scribblenauts.
DS can do everything a PSP can do plus more with custom firmware
The PSP can do far more than what the DS can do and a shit load more with Custom firmware.
The DS on official firmware can't play music or videos, PSP can and all the custom firmware on the DS does is add the ability to play music and videos. The PSP custom firmware lets you do far more all the way up to hardware modifications and ports from the PC.

The touchscreen adds like shitton of gameplay possibilities that a simple thumb stick cannot do or very badly do. Look at Elite Beat Agents and Trauma Center for example. Elite Beat Agents is simply not possible, and Trauma Center requires stylus precision.
[editline]11:25AM[/editline]
also download play
[editline]11:26AM[/editline]
The DS was never suppose to be a media player. It was suppose to be a 100% gaming system. The PSP was suppose to be a portable media center.
