Get the Connections skill and train it. It raises your effective standing by a great deal.

Make it your bible if you intend to PvE.
As for standings, open your character sheet, click the standings button, and view corporations. Look through the Caldari Navy agents and it should organize them by their respective divisions. By expanding a division, it will split the agents within that division into two subcategories---available, and not available. Just check the list after every handful of missions.

Turns out I had enough standing with one corp to do L2 missions already, never knew how to check though - thanks for that.
One of my corp mates gave me a thorax for free.
