Changed up my build after reading the Wiki. Says that the Merlin is good at extreme range...and I agree. With Tungsen ammo, I have an optimal range of 24 km. Changed out the blasters for 150mm railguns. And a medium shield booster. Means I can't use the rockets or afterburners...but eh. Seems like a fair trade.

I get quite a bit out of my Hulk. Mining might not be the funniest thing in eve but if you hook up with other miners, get some bonus have great refining skills you get quite a bit money. Don't forget to higher your refining skills, with the refined minerals you can build some crazy expensive things. But as you said, mining is great if you can do different things next to it (I study while mining).
Anyone know a good Rifter PvP fit?

A medium shield booster on a Merlin is overkill. A small shield booster is all you need. Use a 1MN Afterburner to keep your enemies at a decent range so your rails can pick them off. Use the booster when you take some damage.

I used to mine with a Hulk + Orca combo, at near maxed skills. I also have maxed refining skills. I know all about mining, it's what I spent the first 6 or so months doing in EVE, and that's why I've come to hate it with such a passion. So many skillpoints wasted on a useless profession.
I ended up switching to mission running after I started running L4s to get standing up to drop the refining tax to 0. I realized I was making much more money doing that than mining, and my combat skills weren't even close to maxed like my mining skills were.
Waste of time, man, I'm telling you, waste of time. I should also mention I was mining when trit was selling for 4+ isk a unit, prices have crashed since then, so it's even LESS profitable than when I was doing it.
Haven't bought this game yet, but I wonder if there are any groups that actually try to be morally good. :love:

I've been playing the trial for the past two days, mining is absurdly captivating.

Unless you regularly face danger from other players warping in to fuck you up, there's no reason to expend the ISK on a PvP Merlin when you don't have good support skills to fly it effectively.
You're better off at establishing a stable source of income and saving up. Then you can blow as much as you want on fitting janky PvP frigates.

Meh, missions give loads of money. Buying something that makes them easier means more money in the long run. That's why I'm putting the Merlin on ice for a while.
Damn shit Atlas is going down ain't it? I was in an Atlas PvE Corp when i started and it went quite south even there. Deffing C-J6, heavy shit.
