I don't play EVE anymore but is it sad that I used to actually like grinding for minerals...
New to FP here, been playing EVE for about a year. Just wanted to give some advice to the new players getting into mining, I'd strongly recommend you give it a second thought if you're doing it because it's a low-risk way to make money. If you mine because you enjoy it, disregard this, keep at it and have fun. When I started EVE, I went into mining/production. Got as far as running a Hulk with an Orca for boosting/ore storage. The same two characters are now in battleships running level 4 missions making more isk than I could ever hope to get mining. If I'd have known when I started how much more money level 4s made than mining, I would never have bothered getting into a Hulk. Not only do you get more money, you also have access to a decent amount of minerals (including the rare stuff like megacyte) if you loot the missions. TLDR: new players, if you like mining, go for it, if you think it's just an easy way to make money, go for missions instead. You won't regret it.
I always wondered. When you self-destruct your ship, do you drop anything? I usually preffer certain death over a pirate getting a single ISK out of me, and as a proud Hulk owner I would like to know if it's worth it.
No, you'd still leave a normal wreck that they can loot. That's kind of a moot point though, because self-destruct has a 2 minute countdown, so it's highly unlikely you'd survive after being caught by someone (I'm assuming you're talking about being in low/nullsec space).

Oh well, I guess I could eject my cargo and shoot the can with drones :V
High-sec suicide ganks. Well then, self-destruct will have to do. If I self destruct they don't get the killmail  I can turn it on when I see a non-mining ship jump into the belt and deactivate it if its friendly. My tank can hold long enough for the self-destruct to work, and I can turn it off if its just the random faggot with a frigate wanting to take down a hulk. The tank and TII drones will take care of him.

The only way mining is more profitable than running missions is if you are in null sec. For everything else a decent mission running ship will at least double your isk per hour.

Solo gankers will need something bigger than a cruiser if you're tanked, and you can be fairly certain they'll use whatever they have to. My advice - if you can fly a battleship, mine in that while Hulkageddon is going on. The Rokh in particular is good at this due to its high CPU. http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/25971-Mining-Rokh-FTW.html Not to mention it's funny to see a battleship mining in hisec.
I can afford flying a Covetor instead, and I guess I could ask my corp for an escort. They wouldn't want to lose one of their few hulk pilots, would they? Or I can stay in 1.0, veldspar is better than waiting in the station from July 9th to July 18th. The CONCORD responce times in 1.0 are good enough. And I don't need to hold them off forever, I just need a good enough buffer tank for CONCORD to arrive. What I am afraid of is being insta-popped :ohdear:
Escorts don't really work in hisec (unless you're at war), your gang would not be able to help you until after you get shot at, and any suicide gang that comes for you is looking to bring you down in a single volley. You could get remote repped, but again, that's only useful if the gankers mess up and don't get you with the alpha strike.
I finished up my learning skills, all to 4!
Best advice for miners during hulkageddon: Don't mine in Exhumers, use retrievers and get ignored.

I mine when I want a steady source of income that I have to pay almost no attention to, and when I get bored, I go run missions. it's not bad. but somehow, I always feel like I'm making less money missioning than I do mining. I do wish I could pvp sometimes though.
*pic*
DERP I am spelling masta!!! [editline]12:14PM[/editline]
I do wish I could pvp sometimes though.
Hop in a frigate and head to low sec or 0.0 and try and find some interceptors to kill. It can be some fun stuff and the loot can be better isk than mining. Especially if you kill those lame ass ships people call "Dramiels". Everyone always faction fit's a few mods on them.
Nearly got my first battlecruiser, can't wait
Nearly got my first battlecruiser, can't wait
Hezzy plays? Sweet, didn't know that. What ship you going for?
I don't see how level 4's are even possible Solo. I have a hard time tanking the Blockade mission at level 3, with a drake, and the DPS is horrible
I don't see how level 4's are even possible Solo. The ones I can't AFK are just because of drone aggro. It's really not that hard.
Hezzy plays? Sweet, didn't know that. What ship you going for?
Yeah been playing for about a fortnight now. Going for a Harbinger
I can AFK solo most level fours in my domi. The ones I can't AFK are just because of drone aggro. It's really not that hard.
There's nothing hard about it, It's just their numbers > my numbers, and eventually get through
There's nothing hard about it, It's just their numbers > my numbers, and eventually get through
Drakes have a fantastic tank. Missiles always hit, too. I don't really understand how you could be having that much trouble. Are your secondary skills high enough to be running level 4's? Are you passive tanking or active tanking? Are you making use of mission specific hardeners?
Yeah been playing for about a fortnight now. Going for a Harbinger
That's a good ship. Can't say I'm really a fan of Amarr though. the only thing that really makes lasers any good is Scorch; Scorch is probably the most OP ammo in the game, honestly. Are you in a corp?
