4 rat specific hardeners, 2 extenders, and 2 shield power relays will never have a problem with any level 3 mission, ever. If you are having problems with 4 hardeners in a level 3 mission, the only explanations I can think of would be you're forgetting to turn them on, or you're using the wrong ones for the npcs you're fighting.
It also helps to train up the support skills for shield capacity and such.
ok Ive managed to get enough standing to start level threes but by no means am i ready.
currently flying a vexor and have a Q+18 Level 2 to farm. I should go for myrmidon next for l3 correct? How long will it take until I'm skilled and ready? any tips on vexor fittings until then/what I should train?

By 4 Hardeners, do you mean 1 of each type, 2 of the two most used, or just slap on 4 for the whole lot? I do use a guide for each mission so I know beforehand...
Anyway with 4 hardeners I can only hit around 75 hp/s recharge

You should use 2 for the primary and 2 for the secondary damage type that the npcs deal. There are some cases where you could drop one of the secondary damage hardeners to fit an invulnerability field instead (Angels, Drones, and Mercenaries come to mind).
Lowering your regen rate is not as big a problem as you might think, since increasing your shield resistances will mean that you're actually losing less HP with each hit you take. Your shield will be stronger with 2 additional hardeners over the third extender and the shield recharger (I'd like to reiterate just how useless those mods are) you had on there.
I tried a setup much like the one above. Damage types being dealt was thermal and Kinetic, so I threw on 2 Thermal and 1 Kinetic active hardener, with a passive Kinetic and 2 Large Extenders, The damage was less but so was the shield recharge so it acted the same as having less resistance but more regen
What rats, Gurista or Serpentis? Guristas do mostly kinetic, while Serpentis do mostly thermal. If you were fighting Guristas, you would need 2 active hardeners for kinetic. Resistance amps should really only be used if you have the compensation skills trained up or you want to go with a full SPR set in the lows.
If you're worried about your cap lasting 20-ish minutes and fitting the amp to make it stable, you don't need to do that. Just turn the hardeners off between spawn waves if the mission is taking you longer than your cap lasts.
Resistance amplifiers aren't as good as hardeners. My fit with amps roughly halves the total tankable DPS. What you want to go for is something that can take a lot of punches to the face and last a long time under that kind of pressure.
Funny thing is I still have Battlecruisers to II and I can tank L4s. Your skills just aren't up to par yet. And when I saw your fit, TheTalon, I seriously cringed. That's....horrible.
I know everyone has already given you crap for it and stated the reasons why, but I want to know why you always seem to go for shield rechargers. I remember a few threads back you posted your Drake fit and it was stuffed to the brim with them.
Because with Hardeners I lost HP/S, and with HP/S I lost Resistance, and I always found The Resistance gained was less noticeable than having more HP/S ... When getting absolutely swarmed I lasted longer having more HP/S (150 and there about)
I tried earlier with hardeners, nearly identical fit to the other Drake fit posted, and I took a lot less damage, but was also regenerating shields at half the pace, so the change was equal basically, only with less recharge for any third or fourth damage type I'm not fitted for. Two Invulnerability Fields means losing some resistance all around and an unstable Cap though, unless I move around a whole lot of shit and am willing to go way down on HP/S. And if I'm going to do that I might as well just go 85% Resists on 2 damage types instead of 55-70 on all 4

You don't need an omnitank when running missions. Using an invuln can help against certain factions that deal more than 2 damage types, but against Guristas for example, kinetic and thermal is all they deal, so you really don't need to add resistance to any other damage.
Unless your skills are low, 3 purgers, 2 SPRs, and 2 extenders should be giving you all the regen you need. The rest of your mids should be used for maximum resistance (hence 4 active hardeners). Worry about your resistances more than the hp/sec your shield regens, as absorbing less damage really does give you a better tank than trying to max out your regen rate.
This will really come in to play for level 4 missions, if you try to use shield rechargers over hardeners, your tank will melt in seconds.
Use eve fitting tool you can see how much you tank easily there.

Well, reason being is there's incentive to subscribe knowing you'll have 100m in your pocket to start with, and for the guy who gave the trial, get's 30 Days of additional game time for 100m, instead of 300m for the PLEX
