When you get astrometrics you start with 4 and keep going up by one a level.

It's the first way you said, you start with one and gain an additional probe per level.
IE level 4 gives you 5 probes.

If you sold to buy orders you're the stupid one. That "broken junk" can be turned into rigs, which if you manufacture the right ones can make you lots of isk.

A few months back I looked at a bunch of rig BPs and added up the profit of selling a rig versus the salvage needed to make it, and most of the time it ended up being better to sell the salvage. Things may have changed since I last checked, but rigs have gotten too cheap to really bother making them for profit.

I have Astrometrics IV and I can use 7 probes. Your logic is flawed.

If I recall correctly the ingame description says that you gain 1 probe for each additional level, starting at 1 probe with astrometrics 0.
If that were the case then I wouldn't be able to use 7 probes.
