destroyers with cpu upgrades work quite well if you can go for a ship actually made for mining.
Start training for Caldari Cruiser and use an Osprey whilst you're training for a Mining Barge.

Stop mining. Tag along with one of the level 4 mission runners here and salvage. You'll thank me later for saving you from wasting millions of skillpoints in the most worthless profession in the game. I'm talking from first hand experience.
I'm gonna try this on my netbook when I get home, I heard EVE runs well on it.
Mining arkonor in a WH is quite profitable.

I personally believe that ccp will get around to fixing it eventually. it will become profitable again.
Only problem with salvaging is that sometimes people aren't doing any missions. That's why I want to mine, until someone starts a mission of course.

i play it on my netbook and it's decently playable on it, don't do any fleet engagements and expect to live but i rat and pvp on mine and it's fine.

you go to a busy mission system and probe out mission runners. salvaging doesn't count as stealing so go ahead and salvage :)
lots of people that i know that quit eve quit because they got bored of mining and mission running. spice it up a bit, abuse people in local and get shitty ships and aggro people. or something.
Eve is super srs but it doesn't force you to be serious.
