Dwarf Fortress - WHAT ARE ALL THESE CATS DOING HERE

Where the fuck do I get a shell if I don't have a fisherdwarf. I've got a stone crafter on the verge of insanity. Not that I need a studded cup, but I'd rather not have him kill someone. I can't trade for shell either, because I don't have an architect to build a trade depot.
EDIT: He went mad and ran around the fortress in circles tearing his clothes off... I think I love this game.

You don't need anyone trained properly, just give a mason the architecture job and make a depot.
I haven't got a clue what is going on here, just started the game.
I've read some tutorials telling me how to set up my dwarves, but then it says top tell them to dig but they wont.
Damn set up a floodgate gate, when the caravan was inside and now there stuck :P

First you need dwarves with the 'miner' skill, or you can designate them to be miners, then you need picks

You have 3 choices:
1. You can remove the flood gate.
2. You can open it with a lever.
3. You can kill the caravan by sealing it in completely.

Oh shit, some "Titan" came out, so I decided to send a squad to check him over.
He took out my captain in one hit :ohdear:

Titans are megabeasts, don't even bother attacking them unless you have a squad full of superchampions or have a lot of marksdwarves to kill it from your fort walls.
Fuck yeah, it only took out like 7 of my dwarves. Thankfully, activating the whole fortress and having them gang up on him took him out.

Titans are easy to kill. Send in one slightly good marksdwarf. It'll die.
Bolts pierce everything. No heart is safe.

Apart from magmamen. Arrows stick into them, they pull them out and then fling the flaming arrows back at your dwarves, killing them and starting fires, essentially you are fucked
Ass, my dwarves are now throwing tantrums and they're generally mad because their friends died

You've got to be shitting me. You sent out a load of civilians to kill a giant monster and you lost 7 in the end?
I guess Titans aren't that strong after all. I've never come across one anyway.

Well, my civilians didn't probably even reach the regroup area, a bunch of swordsdwarfs and wrestlers did the job.

Also, it said that the Titan was "Extremely Agile"
I guess his agility didn't help much when there were dwarfs on 6 sides of him and a wall behind him?
Apparently blocks can fit into stockpiles. If I shape ore like hematite into bars and then put it in bins will I still be able to use it for making weapons and armour and stuff?

Afterall, bars are the things you make armor and weapons from, so yes, you can use them for that.

Yes. Do not make ore into blocks though. It becomes unusable.

Just smelt them and stick them in bins. Don't turn the ore into blocks
Alright, I'm currently battling my third orc siege. My archers are on the second level, the orcs are too far away. So, I get a dwarf to lower the bridge for a moment to lure them closer. Some dwarf runs along and flips the switch, I lock him in the lever room so that he'll be at hand to bring up the bridge again. Right, the orcs starts sprinting for the entrance. they get within 20 tiles, good time to draw the bridge back. I look back to my temporary lever-puller. And guess what.
HE'S FUCKING ASLEEP.
THE LITTLE BASTARD FELL ASLEEP. MY FORTRESS IS WIDE OPEN AND THE DWARF WHO'S MEANT TO BE CLOSING THE BRIDGE IS ASLEEP.
FFFFFFFFFFF
Orcs rush in and kill everyone.
The end.

Rofl, that's dwarves for you.
Don't trust your defense on one dwarf only.
I tried to channel water to kill the traders and i ended up flooding my whole base and killing everyone :(
None of the controls the tutorials tell me to do actually do anything in-game. I go to prepare and the + and - keys don't do shit, and the game says they're supposed to too at the bottom of the screen.

Use the up down, left right controls in the menus and enter to confirm. The tutorials worked when I learned.

Atleast 10 Dorfs per impostant lever and even THEN they somehow manage to screw up.
I fucking hate immigrants. The moment I'm done building one square closets for my last wave of immy's, another wave of 24 comes and clusterfucks my base. fffffffff.
fuck no
Damn I got addicted to this game...
I've been playing for 3 days or something (made about 5 fortresses in that time, current is best by now).
Damn animals took over my dining/meeting hall.
