Dwarf Fortress - WHAT ARE ALL THESE CATS DOING HERE
Damn I got addicted to this game...
I've been playing for 3 days or something (made about 5 fortresses in that time, current is best by now).
Damn animals took over my dining/meeting hall.
Cage them.
Bats have taken over the lower level of my fortress. Someone get the cat.
Don't do it. In five minutes you'll have about 40 of them.
Is it normal for an injured dwarf to sleep like a whole year.
It was one of my best dwarfs, nicknamed Rambo. Had 118 kills and almost all of them were with his bare hands. Unfortunately he suffered from a head injury and is now unconscious in the upper body

That's why you have butchers.

You have two cats and get your fortress going. Walk away and come back 5 minutes later, BAM, 50 cats!
Yeah, last night I tried to play the game with ASCII graphics. I managed to: Dismantle the wagon, start a one tile farm, and mine what I think was stone.
Kitten: Ready for slaughter
What have I done!?
:suicide:
How do get non-economic rock for rock mechanisms(I've just started)
The latest dev_now contains a spoiler for HFS in the next release.
But to find out what the spoiler is, you have to venture into a trap, goblin, and who-knows-what-else infested dwarven fortress in search of the spoiler with your faithful companion Scamps.

FFFFuuuuu how can I get these goddam kittens out of my food stockpile?
They are annoying the shit outta me!
Oh that sucks.
I am using a laptop right now (I probably wouldn't be playing DF if I was on my home computer) so it has no numpad...no DF for me.

I can't get past the locked chest.
That adventure thingy is very awesome.
locked chest.
Check the last few "pages" of your adventure. Your character thinks of a potential reason for all the dead dwarves. This is a hint.
That adventure thingy is very awesome.
Yeah it is, is it possible to make houses or can you only do that in DF mode?
[sp]The chest opens! Inside you find a stone tablet...
YOU HAVE UNCOVERED THE SECRET OF THE FORGOTTEN BEASTS. We have been talking for a long time about randomizing creatures without actually having done anything, and in fact we had ended up adding more moddability and stock creatures instead. But we always wanted to get some of the randomized creatures in, and now with the new creature bodies, it seemed like a good time to try it out.
This means that part of the hidden fun stuff for next time will be to have some new random mega-beast style creatures that live down in the new world-spanning caverns. They are built up from a long list of template creatures and more general forms, and then all sorts of abilities are assigned to them. Sphere links should give them passable names (as passable as the god names are, anyway), and over time, though not too much for this release, the spheres associated to them will also determine many of their abilities and other features.
When one arrives, it will give you an appearance overview paragraph that should make it fairly clear what you are facing -- part of the problem with randomized creatures and other random game elements is that they can turn everything into a sort of cookie-cutter slush if they are not integrated into the world carefully (see region names, for example, which will not be good until we have sphere links there). By starting sparingly with large unique beasts that are rarely seen, we are hoping to iron out some of the issues before we start to use them more broadly. [/sp]
That's what you get to read at the end. But you should go through the adventure game, it's awesome.
Yeah it is, is it possible to make houses or can you only do that in DF mode?
Currently it is dwarf mode only, but Toady one has stated that he plans to add that in a future release.

Actually I was referring to the devlog spoiler adventure posted on the prev page, the adventure mode in DF is good but I like fort mode more.
None of the controls the tutorials tell me to do actually do anything in-game. I go to prepare and the + and - keys don't do shit, and the game says they're supposed to too at the bottom of the screen.
+ and - on the NUMPAD, and if you don't have one you can rebind the keys in options.
Can anyone imagine a large gaming company porting this to current-gen?
Ah..
Can anyone imagine a large gaming company porting this to current-gen?

That would probably ruin it.
Can anyone imagine a large gaming company porting this to current-gen?

No.
The fact is that if a large company got their grubby little hands on it, they would dumb the game down beyond all recognition.
Part one: Making the game so simple everything is recognizable by isometric graphics. In other words, ability for modding and easily making new creature is removed, and a lot of the imagination is taken away from the game.
Part two: Making it popular for most gamers. HERE IS WHERE THE DREAM ENDS. One of the biggest turn-offs for this game, along with the graphics, is the intense learning wall new players must endure. They will dumb it down to a silly RTS like thing, probably adding some competetive elements.
Part three: The game is completely changed. One of the few things actually remaining is the title. (possibly the only thing remaining.)
How big should a noble's room be and how many rooms do they want? Like can u put a bedroom and then make another room for an office?
Press 'n' then select the noble in question to view thair room requirements. Some nobles will only need a meagre office others will want a bedroom, an office a private dining room and a tomb all done to royal standards. As for room size bigger rooms have higher value and can get the high ratings need for nobles easer, they also allow for more decorations and places to place demand items.

You could make/buy a cage, then assign the kittens to it. Doesn't need any special labour activated.
Yeah, that adventure game was great.

Ok thanks. Im wondering were I should put the nobles office. Any ideas? The workshop floor or bedroom floor?
EDIT To clear things up, when I press "r" at the trade depot and it says "Trader Requested at Depot" Does that mean a trader is requested at the depot? or does it mean that it will be request if I press "r" again?
Dwarf Fortress shares the similar trate that Sims 3 does. The dwarves aren't working for you, you are working for the dwarves. You have to do everything for them. Get food, build homes, make crossbow bolts for their army. I suppose it's the roguelike style to make nearly everything dependant on the player.
I'd like to have a game similar to Dwarf Fortress, just with a different kind of power structure (not sure if that's the right word there). You'd still have the freedom to customize your fortress, the shape, the army, everything. BUT, you are also given an opportunity to hire dwarves to do this mandatory crap. You can leave the immigrant work assigning, food farming, building bedrooms to these higher class dwarves. This leaves more time for the player to advance the fort's technologically and stuff like that.
I don't know if this is a good idea however, it might take way too much work from your hands. Or maybe that's what the game needs. Looking at your fortress, watching as the dwarves can live by themselves, without your godly hand of help every two seconds.
I still don't think it should replace Dwarf Fortress, oh no. Dwarf Fortress should be the hardcore and roguelike it is, while the other shows a different view.

Someone's watched Yahtzee's review of TS3 ;)
Anyone have a weird problem where dwarves won't dig channels if you set them vertically with Enter?
Someone's watched Yahtzee's review of TS3 ;)
Yeah, I was going to mention that Yahtzee discovered it in Sims 3, but then it didn't fit my message well so I deleted it.
