your post contradicts itself You said get a better computer then you said it runs fine on yours, and yours isn't that great I said mine can run Crysis pretty well, indicating that it's not outdated. your post makes no sense.
No. No not really.
Every few weeks I decide to give this game another chance and pick it up again to play. I start out carefully choosing the perfect starting spot, plenty of room for expansion, nice flat terrain but with plenty of rock, access to water. Magma for forging and optionally some trees. Then as soon as I start all seven of my dwarves get butt raped by fucking mandrills.
That's DF for you.
That's fucking hilarious for me.
Add me to the playing list, I've been playing this since early 2007.
Add me to the playing list, I've been playing this since early 2007.
Hey, add me to the players list. i muscled my way past the learning curve last night. all night. Still lots of learning to do, but at least i enjoy it now XD
How long would you guys say it takes to get an 80-100 man fortress?
A while. So this is pretty hilarious. My merchants left, but the last muskox and guard were struck by melancholy TWO TILES AWAY FROM THE MAP BORDER [editline]10:22AM[/editline]
How long would you guys say it takes to get an 80-100 man fortress?
About 6 hours of non stop play I'd say. There is a 100 dwarf cap so you don't get too populated
The baron has shown up at my fort and activated the economy. If I kill him, his wife, and the tax collector, will that get rid of the economy system? EDIT: I think I might just murder them anyway. >:D
about 6 hours of non stop play i'd say. There is a 100 dwarf cap so you don't get too populated
200
How long would you guys say it takes to get an 80-100 man fortress?
6-7 years if you don't get many immigrants. You could get that many in as little in as four years if you are lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it.
200
You can edit it.
You can edit it.
I start with 10 and gradually increase it when i need immigrants, that way i'm always prepared.
Agh, I hate orcs. I've only defended myself against one attack against them and survived. All the other times my soldiers get slaughtered.
Agh, I hate orcs. I've only defended myself against one attack against them and survived. All the other times my soldiers get slaughtered.
It's good to have mostly marksdwarves in the beginning, the bolts rape the orcs if there are many shooters.
It's good to have mostly marksdwarves in the beginning, the bolts rape the orcs if there are many shooters.
The best I've gotten was 8 crossbow men and they got raped. What do you recommend as a number then?
The best I've gotten was 8 crossbow men and they got raped. What do you recommend as a number then?
That's fine. Just don't let the orcs reach them, shoot from behind fortifications. Melee + marksdwarves = death.
I also play DF and I enjoy it a lot. I was like many people when they first started... confused and (at times) frustrated. However, I found an extremely helpful tutorial ALL on youtube! It explains all of the important topics and some extras (fight arenas, economy, adamantine) and some funny things as well (dragon eating up goblins that were captured and, for some reason, leaving one alive). Captnduck is the person who made the tutorials. There are about 43 videos, all about 10 minutes long, starting from the very beginning, starting your journey, all the way to huge fortresses with drawbridges, dozens of dwarves, strong armies etc. He talks with a microphone through all 43 episodes, adding funny comments and very useful information along the way. Captnduck is Dutch I believe, so if he cannot think of the word to say in english while recording he puts in helpful comments to clear up confusion and comments all the time too with some extra stuff he forgot to mention. Anyway, you can find Captnduck's playlist here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=5A3D7682BDD48FC2 I don't know if anyone has posted this, but I think it is very useful for new players and even experienced players to learn something new or just to see other people's adventures and experiences with Dwarf Fortress.

Guys, give me suggestions on how to mod the game to make it easy and just for fun stuff. I added cheating reactions, made Dwarves incredibly fast, and added stuff like [NO_SLEEP] tags. What else should I do?
It's good to have mostly marksdwarves in the beginning, the bolts rape the orcs if there are many shooters.
I like to have 2 or 3 Marksdwarves, just because from one medium sized Orc siege they can go from Dabbling Marksdwarf to Legendary.. I've seen it happen. [editline]01:48AM[/editline]
Guys, give me suggestions on how to mod the game to make it easy and just for fun stuff. It's fun if you actually make it hard, you pussy
Well, I just started myself a third fortress, my first one died horribly to an orc raid, and the seccond one Is still going in region 2, but I decided to make one and try to keep a log of it, so I will begin with the log of....*checks name* ..Claspclosed...? well whatever *gets started* [editline]04:27AM[/editline] Entry 1: We have arrived at the destination, for our new home, Claspclosed, as named by...well, our ever brilliant leader of course, Anyway the area seems rather woodland and no real mountains in sight, though it seems there are plenty of hills and a lovely brook that we stopped beside, in fact both hills lead to this brook, I must say the area looks quite nice. Our two miners have started digging into the side of the nearby silty hill, here near the brook, a tunnel three dwarfs wide and then quite long, I assume this will be the entrance to our new fortress, though I could be wrong...... Entry 2:I was right, In fact it seems the design is set up so our store rooms are a nice short distance from where we will place a trade depot, once we find the stone to build it with first.... Our leader has already decided that he will make the top level of the fort designated for storage and trade..and lower levels for living and dining....though he has not decided where he wants to create the area for the workshops yet... Entry 3: It seems he designed for a split in the main pathway on the top floor..apparently workshops and 'important' storage such as gems, metals, and bars/blocks, will be on the second floor down, and bedrooms a floor below that, overall I see no problems with this unless something decides to start stealing our wood, food, furniture, or our refuse.... It also seems we found our first stone here, looks like Mica, so we can finally begin building our workshops and the trade depot. Entry 4: This is getting a bit annoying...We have found so much mica and Microcelite we have decided to make them non economic stones, so we can actually use them..infact we are making doors out of Microcelite from how much we are finding...but overall things seem to be going well so far....
my first one died horribly to an orc raid
Welcome to the club mate.
Why even play? That's just boring. It's fun if you actually make it hard, you pussy
Totally agree, i can even say that this game is not about making huge ass fortress and pwn all orcs but about failing in the most stylish/funny way. LOOSING IS FUN!
200. Not 100. [editline]01:44AM[/editline] If I have fortifications one Z level above the ground, will Orc Snipers (Bow Orcs) be able to shoot through and kill my Marksdwarves?

Archers firing through fortifications must pass a skill test of some sort if they are not standing directly next to the fortification. This test is more difficult from further distances.

It's a good idea to place fortifications above the Z-level that they will be defending, because otherwise ranged enemies could conceivably stand directly outside them and receive no penalty from them. Raising them above ground makes them inaccessible to enemies.
So sounds like a good place you chose for fortifications.
Totally agree, i can even say that this game is not about making huge ass fortress and pwn all orcs but about failing in the most stylish/funny way. LOOSING IS FUN!
Agreed. It's no fun having no challenge.
It's fun seeing dwarves die :q: what.
