Orkel, I took your advice on the fortifications. Definitely looks impressive. I just need some crossbowmen in those spots :P

Well, dammit.
Everyone in this thread has the Orc mod.
Oh well, might as well grab it, so I can get as much fun as possible.

Looks very similar to the defenses I posted in my 3Dwarf screenshot :) It works well.

Neat defences. But what if the orcs rush past? The later sieges have a lot of them, and I'm not sure if the bowdwarves can keep up. Maybe add doors at the end of the hallway, so that when the orcs have gone in front of the fortifications, you lock the doors and let the dwarves blast away, while the orcs can't go any further due to the locked doors. Unless they have buildingdestroyer tag enabled, gotta check that.
To this spot. But as it's 3 tiles wide, you will have to build a wall in the middle tile to make doors on both sides.

Another option would be ballistae at the end of the corridor except if they miss you're fucked
I must make a goal for me to reach before I start another game to keep me interested.
How about building as many 'doomsday' devices as you can in the same fort. Then when you tire of the fort you can set the mall off at one without enabling the safety devices for the fort.
Or you can try creating your own version of Copperblazes (a 2d fort that almost completely strip mined the mountain! Cause of death was mining ALL the adamantine)
Or even going truly mad can copying FlareChannel. I am unable to truly describe this fort with words!
Edit:
What a strange engraving my dwarves just made.

Oh good point. Well now I feel like an idiot for not thinking of that :P

Well it's three tiles wide, so I think the miss chance would be low enough. I'll have to redig that doorway on the right and get rid of the food stockpile in that room.

This, or, instead, wait until a shitload of Orcs are right in the middle, and have two bridges on each side of the Fortifications at the end (like one where that red mark is and on the opposite site) and then close them and let them stand there helplessly and get slaughtered.

Put one ballista behind another, but each arrow would be above the next, so that if they were to all fire at the same time, they'd fill the entire hallway, and they just need to fit in a bigger room at the end.

You know the dwarves though, the chances of the bridge closing exactly at the required time is horrendously small. Considering that the hallway is so short, timing would have to be perfect to 1) let the orcs in the middle, 2) not let any orcs past the bridge before it closes and 3) not let most of the orcs stay outside the entrance while a couple are between the bridges.
Now if the hallway was three times as long, I could personally start to consider a defence like that, but as for the current situation it's way too unreliable.

I always do this, and it's effective when you rush everybody inside to an inside meeting place. I keep the lever inside the meeting place, so it takes almost as long for a dwarf to hit the lever as it does for the actual bridge to drop, which is pretty fast. Except that I don't have a tunnel, I keep a Fortification above, so they just stand around near my entrance and get slaughtered.
Or I could add a bunch of support pillars and collapse the cavern on them for dramatic effect.

That's why you create a room with a few dwarves and a hatch to drop food/booze in, and then place all your levers in there. The chances of them all going to sleep/taking a break/drinking/eating at the same time are.. well ok they're not very slim, they're still dwarves after all.
I've ordered my dwarves to dig something I dont want them to. How would I cancel?

Good sir, you basically saved my fortress
Is there anyway to order a dwarf to go somewhere (without doing shit like drafting them into the military and setting a patrol point)?
The only way I know of luring a civilian dwarf to location x is by giving them a permanent task there like pulling a lever that only they can pull endlessly.
check out my cool fort guys!

Perceptive.
What settings would I use for the default dwarf fortress tileset so that the tiles are squares, rather than rectangles? If I am looking at a god damn 3x3 area, I want it to fucking look square, not rectangular.

Gotta love DF's random generator.

Try something like this:
[WINDOWEDX:800]
[WINDOWEDY:600]
[FONT:curses_800x600.bmp]
[BLACK_SPACE:YES]
