check out my cool fort guys!
you should put up a tower to drop water on the orcs nexttime the raid to the left that way you can kill orcs
What settings would I use for the default dwarf fortress tileset so that the tiles are squares, rather than rectangles? If I am looking at a god damn 3x3 area, I want it to fucking look square, not rectangular.
You need to make sure the character tileset you are using is square.
Journal of Claspclosed Entry 5: So Far so good it seems, All the floors have been dug out as needed, we have a decent stone storage to help clean up this mess of Mica and Microceline that is everywhere, and the traders from our homeland just arrived, though we have not gotten to see what they have brought for us yet, we hope there is an anvil, and other supplies, though we hope we have enough we can trade to get what we need....
I wanna play this so bad. I fucking love these kinds of games, but I never get the hang of it, blargh. I tried the introduction and stuff, and blargh. I'm just gonna play it now for 2 hours until I learn something
I wanna play this so bad. I fucking love these kinds of games, but I never get the hang of it, blargh. I tried the introduction and stuff, and blargh.
Exactly like me. However, this looks pretty interesting I think I'm getting into it. Can a well built fort withstand anything?

So have patience, it gets immensely fun after the learning curve. [editline]03:40PM[/editline]
Exactly like me. Unless you give yourself handicaps like not allowing cage traps/only a small amount of traps alltogether/no traps at all/no marksdwarves etc etc. http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Challenges There you can find a lot of challenge forts that you can try. Some of them are hilarious. My favourites include "This is Sparta" and "Land Battleship".
If only I had the patience :frown:
I didn't have it in the beginning. I played for an hour, decided "fuck this" and removed the game. A few months later, I thought I'd give it another go and was determined to learn it from all the hilarious stories I had heard from players (Boatmurdered for example), and did.
Making a race in which only ingenious traps can kill them. Either that or my super dogs.
I wish someone I knew played this game so they could show me some basics. I just get all too confused and shit.
I wish someone I knew played this game so they could show me some basics. I just get all too confused and shit.
The DF steam group chat is a good place to ask for advice regarding the game, no matter how basic the questions are. Unfortunately it's empty at the moment, but keep an eye on it as we sometimes have meetings in there.
I wish someone I knew played this game so they could show me some basics. I just get all too confused and shit.
I learned by the wiki and using the steam DF chat http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dfplayers You don't have to understand every single part of the game. The first time I started out it took me ages to make a farm and when goblins eventually came and fucked everything up I was pretty confused, but it was fun to see what CAN happen in DF which helped me improve when I started again. I still don't understand aquafirs so I tend to stay away from them. [editline]05:19PM[/editline] I'm in chat right now if anyone needs help

I fucking love DF, but i dont make any real interesting forts, except one with a mall-like room in it about 4 stories high. And yes, the learning curve was nearly as sharp for me, but leetsepeak and some other person i cant remember helped alot. regardless, about have of the first 50 forts starved to death or were lost to corrupt saves, the rest died in war/massacred by carp and raving lunatics.
Partay in the chat
you guys should get on the chat. It's so lonely and cold :(

http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php and I then used this tutorial. It has loads of pictures. http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Indecisive's_illustrated_fortress_mode_tutorial
Bwhahaha, I finally have a defensible fortress. After it's fully completed and this orc siege is put down, I'll upload a pic.
Journal of Claspclosed Entry 6: Durring out creation of the entry, we decided to channel out the area above the entry, however before we began it colappsed the instant the pick struck the ground and now one of our miners is injured...we had not expected such an injury so we had to quickly assign someone to make a bucket, since our wood worker is refusing to make anything....and the instant the bucket was finished...it was found out that our local brook had frozen over! This is not a very good start it seems... Entry 7: The miner..who was also our expedition leader, has died of thirst..because of the damned brook freezing over...we are now down to a company of six...though it seems it did not take long for the other dwarves to take what our leader left in this mortal plane of existance...However now we have a bedroom with a dead body in it...and are trying to get a graveyard dug out as soon as possible..though we are down to just one miner...I believe we will need to designate a new miner to help catch up with the work.... Entry 8: By the gods....we must be cursed...there is now orcs storming towards our position with the intent of blood on their hands...and there are only six of us...I see no way we can survive this assault...as I write they are heading towards our entry, and I pray that I will be able to flee if things go badly....... Entry 9: The traps failed..the screams of my comrades I can hear echo'ing in the air behind me as I run...Their screams haunt me...but I will be lucky to even survive..as all I have is the clothes on my back, and nothing else....I will try to reach the home land and get assistance...mabye we can re-claim our fortress....from this evil entity... ((End of game, strength broken, going to attempt to re-take...nevermind reclaim seems glitched to me so I will just play my other game, oh well.))
I downloaded the better looking version of DF and there's no sound, did it happen to anyone? Thanks very much Zombuster.
The sound is disabled in it on default, change it in the config. Dwarf Fortress\data\init\init.txt at the top
I've never played this but it looks like the most fucking confusing game ever.
I've never played this but it looks like the most fucking confusing game ever.
Well great games sometimes have steep learning curves... I think Dwarf Fortress would be somewhere under EVE.
I wish someone I knew played this game so they could show me some basics. I just get all too confused and shit.
The best way to learn is first, get a version of DF that isn't just ASCII graphics, that helps a lot. You need to download the latest OPENGL port of the game (Windows, Linux, Mac). This version of the game runs a hell of a lot better than the default version, and will become the official version in the next release. After that, install your tilesets, you'll want a nice graphic tileset such as Dystopian Rhetoric. Easy to install, just extracting to the right area. (Don't get the pre-installed pack, that doesn't use the latest OpenGL version of the game) Next get a nice character tileset, if you installed Dystopian Rhetoric you'll need a 16x16 character tileset (To match the size of the graphical tileset, those small ones are for people who just use pure ASCII graphics). Again, to install just extract to the right place (/data/art). Next you're going to need to edit your Init.txt file (/init/init.txt) to use your graphics, I've bolded and made notes on the important settings:
-From line 31 onwards- [BLACK_SPACE:YES] -- [GRAPHICS:YES] <- Makes the game use graphics [GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDX:1280] <- Window Res [GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDY:400] [GRAPHICS_FONT:Guybrush.bmp] <- Name of the Character Tileset used in Window mode (Not graphical tileset) [GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENX:1920] <- Fullscreen Res [GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENY:1080] [GRAPHICS_FULLFONT:Guybrush.bmp] <- Name of Character Tileset used in Fullscreen [GRAPHICS_BLACK_SPACE:YES] <- Doesn't stretch the graphics to fit -- [GRID:120:67] <- Grid size, see below on how to work yours out. [FULLGRID:120:67]
To work out your GRID (amount of tiles in windows mode) and Fullgrid (amount of tiles in fullscreen mode) just divide your resolution by the size of your tilesets, so in my case my FULLGRID with a 16x16 tileset, and a resolution of 1920x1080 is: 1920 / 16 = 120 1080 / 16 = 67.5 (I use 67 ingame) You might also want to change: [SHOW_FLOW_AMOUNTS: --] To YES, changes water graphics to numbers 1-7 (1 shallow, 7 full). Helps a lot. Ok, now you are all setup, you need to learn how shit works, first read this: Indecisive's illustrated fortress mode tutorial. Gives you a nice quick rundown on the basics. Then watch CaptDuck's Dwarf Fortress video tutorials. This will really, really help. He just plays a normal game and talks you through it, with text at the bottom to help further. (He also uses Dystopian Rhetoric graphics, which should help seeing as you have the same). After that you should know enough to play, just use the Wiki to query things from then on (Such as SaltWater to learn what you'll need to build a fort by the ocean). Good luck, it's worth it. [editline]02:40PM[/editline] If anyone wants a pre-installed graphical version of Dwarf Fortress let me know, I'll upload one.
I used Indecisive's to learn the ropes. After like 10 steps it kind of trails off, but it gives you a nice basic idea of how to start.
Thanks guys! Trying the May Green one first, and then the other one Appox told me about. Now It'll probably be easier
If you donate, the creator of the game sends you a crayon drawing through the post, no joke.
