Thanks guys! Trying the May Green one first, and then the other one Appox told me about. Now It'll probably be easier
The one I linked to looks better imo. I still don't have much of a clue as to how to make weapons without a magma source, any help?
The one I linked to looks better imo. If you set it up properly lava based forging is superior to hauling tons of wood/charcoal up and down.
I've never done that, it's far easier to just use wood than fuck around with magma and end up with fire imps and magma men jumping out of the magma and fucking up your shit
Use grates, or (if it's a volcano) just station some crossbow soldiers outside the top of the volcano and wait for them to come to the surface.
If you donate, the creator of the game sends you a crayon drawing through the post, no joke.
This is true, as I got one in the mail back in January after I donated. Creator being Tarn Adams aka. Toady. Here it is in it's scanned glory:
The one I linked to looks better imo. I still don't have much of a clue as to how to make weapons without a magma source, any help?
You have to bake wood into charcoal, then you can use the non-magma versions of the buildings like the magma version. The charcoal usage rate is 1 charcoal for one production step so it can get very expensive very quickly. finding some coal can help as that can be baked into 2 charcoal (but it uses up 1 to do the reaction).
Atleast I digged a cave now, then I didn't know what to do. I have a short attention span, I'll probably go back to it later, since I want to learn.

I'm now cursed to NEVER be able to play unless I have a magma source I can tap into. I spoiled myself with it.
Hey guys, it's my first Spring on this new fortress (meaning, exactly one year after I've embarked) and I've never killed anybody or done anything to piss anybody off, and Elves are sieging me. They have 8 Bowmen and 8 Wrestlers. What the shit is going on? I still have 7 dwarves! [editline]06:02PM[/editline]
I wish I had never used magma. I'm now cursed to NEVER be able to play unless I have a magma source I can tap into. I spoiled myself with it.
Really? I used magma and after I saw imps come out of it and burned the entire map that was Heavily Forested, I never touched it again.
Really? I used magma and after I saw imps come out of it and burned the entire map that was Heavily Forested, I never touched it again.
Well, there are two types you can get. You can get magma vents, and magma pipes. I'm not sure which is which, but one hits the surface, and one does not. The one that does NOT hit the surface can be incredibly hard to find, but you can use it without the worry of fire-y death. I admit i've used the map reveal thing before to find the area of the magma if it's underground. The other type, obviously, hits the surface, and will throw all sorts of flaming annoyances at you. However, if you just find a place basically on the other side of the map to settle, most of these monstrosities will leave you alone. Then, just channel a single tile flow underground and put some grates over the tile you're going to put your workshop on, you're pretty much safe. Also- most of these creatures aren't as dangerous as they seem. The fire imps can really be killed by the everyday dwarf who isn't afraid to burn his hands breaking a fire imp neck or two. The magma men are tricky, but any sort of weapons skill will beat them. The main annoyance is the constant ring of flame coming from the fireimps jumping out of the pit. Eventually though everything will burn down, and if you're brave you can do yourself a favor and do I what I did- station some guard squads outside the pit and let your workers build a wall around the thing.
I wish I had never used magma. I'm now cursed to NEVER be able to play unless I have a magma source I can tap into. I spoiled myself with it.
I prefer magma and will do as little forging as possable when i do not have it. So I have had forts where only champions had metal armour, fortunately almost everyone use crossbows, the fort died because I got bored and diverted the river into it.
Goblins are yellow ?__?
Anybody know why I'm being sieged by Elves on my first Spring? :< [editline]06:20PM[/editline] Wow, what the fuck, my drawbridge decided to open itself, and then I couldn't close it, because the stupid fucking lever decided to stop working.
Goblins are yellow ?__?
Depends on the type. Marksgoblins are green, swordsgoblins are blue, speargoblins are brown/yellowish, macegoblins are red, and so on. Siege or ambush? They can send ambushes if you cut too many trees. Hard to achieve on a sparse map but you can hit the "cap" quite fast in a heavily forested one. Or so I think.
Well great games sometimes have steep learning curves... I think Dwarf Fortress would be somewhere under EVE.
I have played both games (or to be precise i play both games every day.) Dwarf Fortress is just above EVE.
I have played both games (or to be precise i play both games every day.) Dwarf Fortress is just above EVE.
I've only ever played the trial, so that's all I have for experience here :P
Is there something similar to Dwarf Manager that would work on versions newer than 40d? I can't live without it, and I'm hearing about some nice stuff in 40d13. Ideas?
Wait for it to get updated. Foreman is for 23a or something, manager is your only hope.

I really need to know how to get the default tiles to look squared shape and not rectangular. It's really annoying me...
All you need to do is ensure that [BLACK_SPACE:NO] and then set the resolution is grid(x) x 10 and grid(y) x 10. so for a grid of 25:80 the resolution would be 250x800 there will be some miner distortion but the current set will appear to be square. You can also set the graphics mode to yes as this uses a square set by default and have tiles of 16x16 instead of 10x10.
Add me to the players list, I love this game.
Atleast I digged a cave now, then I didn't know what to do. I have a short attention span, I'll probably go back to it later, since I want to learn.
Start off by making a room for a farm and a room for the dwarves to sleep in (let them all sleep together to start with)
I really need to know how to get the default tiles to look squared shape and not rectangular. Read my post before, the bit with the init editing.
So- how the hell did you guys get past the learning curve?
So- how the hell did you guys get past the learning curve?
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page Having that always open in the background helped a lot.

Third times a charm, I'll try to bash away at this while getting my sleep schedule back in check.
there is no new stuff in 40d13, it's just the newest OpenGL version of the game, so it runs a hell of a lot faster.
That's what I meant, but DM still refuses to cooperate.
