Fucking carp killed my woodcutter :( The rocks are annoying, they're all over the floor. How can I train someone to be a butcher?
I'm only at 41 dwarves, and my computer is already laggy as hell. Dammit.
I'm next to a volcano with imps and all and the worst I've gotten is monkeys and my hunter-archer (who has killed an imp or two) hospitalised from what I believe was a horse.
This game has a pretty sucky UI.
This game has a pretty sucky UI.
This game is still in the alpha. You can can wait until the Presentation Arc comes out in 5+ years.
I'm only at 41 dwarves, and my computer is already laggy as hell. Dammit.
Are you running the OpenGL version? But yeah, this game is a resource hog.
Which would you prefer, burrowing or a proper UI. Another thing, do you really expect this game will eventually be finished?
This game has a pretty sucky UI.
Yep. Just gotta learn it, after awhile you can just tab it off screen completely
Yep. Just gotta learn it, after awhile you can just tab it off screen completely
Yeah, it's not even necessary for me anymore, better to have a wider view than a third of the window blocked by the UI.
Are you running the OpenGL version? But yeah, this game is a resource hog.
Yeah, 40d12. (d13 crashed on me) We're getting a new computer soon, anyway, so it's no big deal.
Started a little fort! I have no idea what the name was I forget to check, time to pick the location. (Going to keep this fort mainly on a 2D Plain, easier to look at) Lets go on some haunted mountain, why not! Haunted means there will be lots of skeleton animals, like normal animals... just skeletons, very scary. Didn't get a picture of my starting equipment, but it's your standard stuff, a miner, woodcutter, brewer, grower, carpenter mason bla bla. Our 7 dwarfs embarked at the top of the map, moved them right down to the bottom to dig into the mountain next to a waterfall I found at the base of the mountain, going to use that river to have moats all over the fort. As you can see, I have orderd the dwarfs to construct rooms and channels. Lets start work! Oh wait, they are all tired from the trip down, shame. Dwarfs woke up, had something to eat, drink, sat about, something more to eat and got back to work. Dug out most of the work areas and moats created bridges to cross the gaps that will soon be filled with water. I also created a bridge going over the water fall, I hope no one falls off it, or into the moats for that matter.. probably a bad idea in hindsight. Remember I said we dug out our mine near the bottom of the map? No one told the Horse, who's all alone and confused, in the rain, with zombies and skeletons nearby. Oh dear. Eugh, trying to make the Dwarfs do things, and a 'Zombie Hoary Marmot' is being annoying. I'll just ignore it for now... Ah.. probably should get rid of it. Drafted our woodcutter into the army because he has an axe, and he chopped it to pieces. Skeletons bleed like all the others The square space next to the river is going to be the farm, need to conduct some irrigation (flood it), because the floor is mudstone, and you can only create farms on soil or muddy surfaces. I've created a floodgate (White X on Brown background) connected to a lever (Ò). Lets open it and close it quickly and pray everyone doesn't die. Worked a charm. Plump helmets being planted all year round! Trade post is complete, but will want the entrace to it somewhere else, or else I can't put traps on the main entrance (wagons won't go over them) Cut a hole in the river wall to fill up the moats, everything is going perfectly! Oh bugger! Turns out I didn't take into account the pressure, so the water filled the moats up and is now overfilling. I have an idea though! Going to channel the moat off the cliff, just need to wait for my miners... Both on a break? You lazy dwarfs. Maybe they think it's a pool party, whatever it is, they're just chilling out in a fort filling up with water, while I bark orders at them to channel the damn moats off the cliff before we all die. Are you off your break yet? Please be off your break. Having a drink? Of what? The water in the fort, because there is enough of that And now he's gone to sleep, brilliant. The miner finally got off his break, and finished channelling the moat off the cliff. The water poured over the edge, the fort is saved (although it needs to dry out a bit) This is the state of the fort now, soaked. It's safe though... inside. The man-made waterfall i've just created is right next to the temp stockpiles I set up at the start, so all the dwarfs get hungry, go to get a snack, and run away in fear. I'll have to fix that... not right now though!
You can find out what your current fort is called by opening the status window as it is written at the lop left. What kind of traps do plan on using? I have seen wagons roll-over stone fall, weapon and cage to get to the depot. Even a pet on a rope doesn't interfere with them.
Thats a cool fort, never played around with water. I've always just used cage and stone fall traps, quick and easy to set up. Also a wooden cage can hold a megabeast. I never used traps before but now I always embark with a dwarf as mason/mechanic.

I thought they saw them as a wall. I'll probs just use stonefall traps and cage traps for now. Not enough dwarfs to really get the shit I need for weapon traps.
I wish they allowed use to use the high tech device, called a "mouse" (I am kno what you are thinking, not the small creature) to play this game. It may be a bit of a long shot, but I think this "mouse" will catch on, so they should enable support for it

I believe that you can use your mouse when using designations. Ninja-d

Keyboard is way faster. especially since so many commands are macro'd to it, helps to have both hands on it.
You can use the mouse for designations.
In other strategy games, now hear me out on this, you can do the entire game, with your mouse. There's some hotkeys, but it is possible to do it WITH YOUR MOUSE
In other strategy games, now hear me out on this, you can do the entire game, with your mouse. There's some hotkeys, but it is possible to do it WITH YOUR MOUSE
Those games aren't as complex as dwarf fortress. First of all, as it stands. Most players only use the keyboard, and find it way faster than the mouse and perfectly easy to use. Second, this is an alpha game, the UI is basic at best. Maybe in the future it will be kitted out different, but not yet. (Remember, this game is made by 1 guy, and he'd rather spend his time on the meat and bones of the game first)
(Remember, this game is made by 1 guy, and he'd rather spend his time on the meat and bones of the game first)
I am just wondering why he is choosing to do this all by himself, I mean, I have seen plenty of people volunteer, many of which were skilled, and just wanted to get a name for themselves, but he just does it alone. I mean, there is a reason most development teams have quite a few people, and there is all these people willing to help, so why doesn't he let them

Apart from that he doesn't want anyone else, probably slow him down. I assume the structure of the game would make it hard for people to just come in and do shit, because the scope is so vast yet unsure.

And I think the other 95% of studios that have more then 1 person seem to deal with it just fine
What exactly does the port to OpenGL entail? Does it include some of the newest developments or any particular improvements over the version that's been up since last september?
This is not a like writing a book. And I think the other 95% of studios that have more then 1 person seem to deal with it just fine
The point is this game has some sort of magic about it, and hes the only one who can keep it alive. Yeh, I know its cheesy.

There is clearly something that has flaws, and you are defending it acting as if it pissed happiness and shit rainbows. And you can say that it's not done yet, but when it's released to public view, it's allowed to be scrutinized. Because it's all for him and about him, and if the game gets released, he wants to be the sole name behind it

The thing is, the more people working on it, the more discussions he'll have to have to keep the game the same, functioning, and working. It will be a lot more meetings, rather than actual development, and it will take EVEN LONGER. And the community is happy with this the way it is.
What exactly does the port to OpenGL entail? (DF is a very CPU intensive game) No new features in it, at the moment it's just getting the bugs ironed out before it becomes the official version of DF. (It's pretty much done)
