Are there any disadvantages to playing with tilesets?
Nope. The game doesn't fully support them yet though (you'll see the same tiles being used for other things).
I use to use graphical tilesets, but once you use a nice ASCII tileset, it's way better.

Yeah check the List at the wiki
I use Anikki 8x8 with the natural colour scheme
I use the may green tileset. http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php (download is a standalone game)
You can actually tell what you're looking at!
Thanks Appox.

Except that everything looks ugly as shit.
I hate that tileset with a passion. It's my most hated mod.

Do I put those tilesets in data/art?
Oh! my weaponsmith just made an Artifact weapon weapon..*looks* lets see...
Zartunur, an Iron Trident...*looks at it closely*
Its an iron trident..all craftsmanship of the highest quality, and..it is encircled with bands of iron..this came from a posession...? okay then...

It's an artifact, not a legendary weapon. There's a difference.
Want a cookie?
okay fine artifact, sue me for making a mistake,

...wee..a bracelet..or something..whatever, done with that for tonight..trying adventure mode now.
Do I put those tilesets in data/art?
Yeah data/art, rename is something simple like ani (optional)
In your init/init.txt file, change the FONT to ani.bmp (instead of curses which is default)

It's a nice tileset if you're completely new I suppose.
I use the curses 800x600 set with natural colours. I like that the default characters. The natural colours is pretty much a must have if you don't like eye-bleeding colours.
I just found out you can make Tower Cap farms... all the time wasted cutting stupid wood.
Once I embark to a site with magma (or other features) that was found with the built in site finder, I like to use a bug in the game to find map features.
How to use the bug. (hidden for those who don't want to know)
[sp]The bug is with the deport (must be placed, does not have to be built, but it can be).
The trick works best before the fort reaches the lower levels.
All you do is start building a depot then press 'D' to view deport access.
Look at the levels below the fortress and you will notice that almost all of the map is flashing red but the area with feature are the normal black of hidden terrain.
Mine out the suspect area to find the feature.
you can also use this trick to gauge the depth of the feature as the area below the feature will show up red.[/sp]
holy shit so useful thanks
Are there any disadvantages to playing with tilesets?
Mods. Since the tileset doesn't have support for them, Orcs will be big O's etc. So play with ASCII if you use mods.
I need to learn how to plant tower caps. Wouldn't mind a fort near the ocean but no wood is a real pain in the arse. (Making barrels via a metal forge fuck that)

I'm going to try it right now. You need to find a underground river or lake and then flood an area etc...
You can't plant trees yet, which is a shame because it'd be nice to have a big tower cap field underground.
Ha! I can just imagine all the dwarves shouting and falling for a second, then the lead dwarf shouting, "Alright, we have alot of furniture to haul!" and all the crippled dwarves crawling to the stockpile.
Actually they don't get hurt if they fall down a single level, they just get stunned for a few moments.

Yeah, but tower caps grows on irrigated areas. Only if it is a underground river though.
So just when I finished my giant aqueduct some fire imps came out to play resulting in 6 dwarfs burning to death and 30 more deaths because of the resulting resulting tantrum spiral.

Always have extra coffins built. If they get buried, nobody gets unhappy.
So I have shit all experience with militaries and all that, but is there any (melee) weapon that's better than another in all ways? I just want to get a few melee-ers and I'm not quite sure what weapon to assign them to.

Whatever you do, DO NOT USE SPEARS
Unless you like half of your military dying from sparring wounds piercing most of their internal organs.
Ffs, I just found a under ground pool and I just happen to dig it twice and my best miners died... Time to restart again.
My sky battleship is doing good, the worst my dwarves have had to contend with so far is a single kabold theif.
Though I'm going to have to figure a way to pump water from the brook 10 z-levels up it to the ship water reservoir.

Screw pumps with walls and floor preventing the water from escaping is what I would use. It needs a lot of planning I would assume. Also I want to see pictures of your flying ship with 3Dwarf.
I just started a human settlement(with actual humans as the playable race). It's quite fun just building atop the ground. I've just finished the temporary homes for my citizens, the wall, all necessary workshops, the moat and starting to work on the drawbridges.
In the past, one of my dwarves recieved an eye injury (color is dark grey AKA "lopped off"), and he passes out from time to time, probably from the pain. Anyway, I believe he recently passed out on one of my cage traps and was caught in a cage.
So, I am wondering how I can get him out, because all of my attempts only move the cage and not take the dwarf out.
Thank you to anyone who could give me a hand.

I think you go into the cage interface and deselect the cage.

Wait, I thought you were doing a land battleship?
