Dwarf Fortress - WHAT ARE ALL THESE CATS DOING HERE

Okay thanks guys, got my first elite.
What is the dis-advantage of them doing it? (Note: they have no armor yet)
There was a time when one dwarf ripped another's chail mail off and kept carrying it around for months in his left hand, but that was an accident where I forgot one guy without a weapon (so he went wrestlin' in the barracks) and it just made me hate wrestlers even more.
thread title should have been about carp
you realy need to put this link in your start post his tutorials rocks it helped me start playing http://www.youtube.com/user/captnduck he is a good teacher ^^
Yeah, I've been watching his tutorials I am on part 11 right now. I am watching them all before I even open the game, and when I do open the game I am going to be doing this tutorial:

Hopefully all this will get me a huge edjumucation in the game.
I learned how to set my windowed DF resolution to 1024x800 :3
I want to set mine to 1680x1050 fullscreen, but I am afraid it will fuck with how the icons look, and I don't know what size the icons are..

Mayday is 16x16, anything else I don't know.
For 1680x1050 you want 105x65 tiles. It'll be stretched a bit height-ways.

Bah, I will just leave it windowed..
On a side note, Dr. Pepper mixed with Mt. Dew is fucking delicious.
I call it Dr. Dew.
:buddy:
Holy fuck I got lucky with these Kobold buddies.
It is also possible to settle on a kobold cave that is not hostile to your fortress. This is most-likely unintentional, but could prove to be permanent depending on how kobold diplomacy is handled in the future. In the 'u'nits menu, the kobold inhabitants will be listed as "Friendly". Settling on a friendly kobold cave will be roughly equivalent to settling next to (or on top of) a human town, the main differences being that there will be no food stores or wooden furniture and no wooden housing to commandeer. The caves are useful, like any other cave, in exposing minerals, gems, rocks and ore veins from the outset of your fortress. This is the most common type of kobold cave you are likely to find.
Friendly kobold caves boast an assortment of animal and plant specialists, guards and the occasional weapon-master and will work with the dwarves in repelling sieges, kobold and goblin thieves, and ambushes. They will not be hostile to dwarven traders, but may attack traders from a civilization they are at war withVerify. Friendly kobolds will meander little, often staying in the same spot for years and they will not set off traps unless rendered unconscious by wounds on top of them, nor be targeted or hurt by catapult fire. Kobolds in fortress mode do not sleep or eat currently, and their created wealth is added to your own at embarkation.
The Kobolds that are in my local area are friendly and they'll even help me fight off bad guys!
I just realized that this tutorial is 6 hours long.. Well, 40 parts 10 minutes each.. Fuck, I am in for the long haul.. I been watching for 2 hours so far, 4 hours to go.. But I am learning, so that is good. God damn, it is like going to school to learn how to play a game.
Just started over, things went slowly from great to bad :v:
I actually enjoy playing with the standard ASCII graphics.

I may switch to them someday, but I think I will start out with a tileset..
If I don't know what something is, then I take a look at this: http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Map_legend
That's why I really don't need anything else than the standard :v:
EDIT: FINALLY! Migrants!
I think it went downhill when the macaques stole a year's worth of supplies from the wagon. With the bad location, poor leadership, and low morale, the expedition disintegrated into a bloodbath, the frustration of poor work conditions and eating vermin having turned the dwarves upon themselves. The elven caravan arrived at the end of the year, to find a network of tunnels filled with rotting corpses and miasma. And a yak.
:sigh:
Does anyone else HATE elven caravans? Every year, all they ever bring is truckloads of exceptional quality rope, none of which anyone needs.

Many people attack them and steal all of their shit, then steal their attack force gear to sell later

This captnduck guy hates them (The one with the 6.5 hour long video tutorial).
I have just finished watching the 20th video out of 40 videos.. Still haven't lost interest. It is great watching his for progress, and also learn a lot at the same time.
Oh god that artifact is amazing. I can't wait to start playing just so I can get an amazing artifact like that. (That is an artifact right? I am basing my knowledge off of these tutorials, and want to see if I am actually learning, or whether I just sound like an idiot now.)

Yeah, it's a real DF artifact the picture was made of.
Although usually they're more like this.

I hate to be one of these guys but the ascii is a big turnoff to me.
I like the fact that there's millions of possibilities and that really makes me want to play, but I fear I won't understand it and won't get into it.

You are afraid of not understanding something? O_o

Have you considered tilesets?

Well I mean, I might not be able to get into BECAUSE I don't fully understand it.
Have you considered tilesets?
Yeah. That's why I'm actually considering playing now.
Uhhhm.. What is the file called that contains the key bindings? And where is it located?
[editline]07:34PM[/editline]
Ugh. Nevermind. I always look forever for the answer for something, and when I don't find it, I ask on here, and then the moment I ask, I fucking find the answer..
Okay, found my old files. What I need now is a goal to keep me playing. Like some sort of mega contruction. Playing Dwarf Fortress just for the sake of having a fortress is not enough to keep me playing. Any ideas?
Stop considering and just play! I didn't play DF for the longest time because I was "afraid" of it. I finally just dove in and MY BALLS GREW 3X!
I actually really prefer the ASCII, though I can use a tileset as well.
I'm afraid that the fire breathing zombies and steel hard orcs will kill my dwarves. :frown: But alright. I'll just think of something to do as I go.
Last time I made a pit that went down 11 stories and ended in a lava pit. I liked putting depots on the top.

I made a water tower that pumps water from the brook/river about 6 z levels high and then drops it into another building with drainage grates as the floor to use as a shower, dwarves love waterfalls
http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1016-artificialwaterfall
Alternatively, make awesome defenses such as a ballista firing down a narrow corridor to fuck up elven caravans, skewering their donkey with the bolt while you are at it, sending the donkey flying about 8 tiles backwards
