Dwarf Fortress v13 - Orkel looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!

The Ferns of Paint killed their first target! The Kobold thief didn't have time to steal anything and carried a silver dagger.
Wow I just stumbled upon the future plans section. I wish he'd hire some modders or something to help speed up development. The siege section sounds great, it would make me redesign my fortresses entirely.
ok so I'm mining a hole to hopefully use as an above ground farm - It's slow going, I have to dig right from the VERY TOP of the mountain.
Then a goblin ambush appears when my mayor's in there digging a hole - They appear RIGHT IN THE HOLE.
Cue me thinking "oh shit oh shit oh shit my legendary miner".
But she surprises me.

Yes, she swings her pick and takes off the goblin's fucking LEG. THE WHOLE LEG.
And all she gets from it is a bruised lower arm. Holy fuck.
.. Hahaha. That goblin got owned.

It's pretty amazing.
Too bad the release date is like,2025.
Does anyone know why my dwarves won't use the reclaimed fortress' levers?

NVM, just found out you have to claim the buildings.
Okay, this game is pretty cool, but I am having some problems with farms. There is a river flowing near my base that goes through the mountain, and what I did is tunneled under the area near it and made a little tunnel leading to it, but it ended up flooding the entire area I dug out there. Surprise. I thought I would be able to put a floodgate and stem the flow, but I can't. Any help making a farm?
Legendary miners make excellent use of picks in combat.

Oh no...
(Look at the bottom)
No Gods or Kings, only Carp.
[QUOTE=eatdembeanz;27618189]Were the tables needed for surgery RIGHT NEXT to the bed? If so, that's your problem.[/QUOTE]
yea. I think they were. That's interesting, thanks. I think one of the tables was like a diagonal away or so. I'll mess with that.
I am really liking the adventure mode, even when I am ambushed by boogymen after spending a long time working out attributes and such.
[editline]28th January 2011[/editline]
Is it wrong that I collect corpses in adventure mode?
My dwarfs refuse to use Wood Furnaces.
Any ideas?
I think i've found the perfect tune for a fresh embark.

Is wood available.
Do they have wood burning enabled in the Farming labor.

I collect the corpses of my comrades and line them around a tree to burn.
God damn it.
I thought it was furnace operating they needed checked.
[editline]28th January 2011[/editline]
Oh god I forgot to set my danger rooms door to tightly closed.
Its a fucking pet graveyard in there.
My Glassmaker went berserk. His wife, who happened to be in the same room as him, was his first target. I summoned the guards, but not before it was too late. This completely battle-untrained female mason managed to get a skull-breaking punch on her berserk husband killing him.
Mood: Content. Legendary dining hall, dead spouse, witnessed death recently.
Such is the life in Dwarf Fortress.

I collect the corpses of my comrades and use them as throwing weapons.
I'm sure it's what they would have wanted.
My fortress is 100 percent self sustaining in the first 2 years.
Should have an activate military next year as well.
[editline]28th January 2011[/editline]
I also have a legendary weaponsmith.

I use them as melee weapons.
It's very satisfying to pierce the heart of the baddie who killed your comrade with the same comrade's body.
To be honest, I can really understand the appeal of this game, and I'd love to play it, but I think the whole ASCII thing makes it really difficult to interpret for beginners.
Any tips, if i do begin playing?

Depends if you start with Adventure or Fortress mode.
I'd suggest reading magmawiki, the tutorials there are quite nice.
I also suggest making the Magmawiki your Holy Book.
But the ASCII was easy to get used to IMO.
Should go and try this once again, does mayday still update his tileset?
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
last time I stopped because my dwarfs getting stuck and I didn't know a fuck about the military system :saddowns:
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
hurah, he still updates. Time to try this out once again.
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
woah, adjustable world generation :aaa:
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
What are the recommeded settings to start with? I remember some old video I used to copy it from, but I think that's a bit outdated.
edit
anyone? :saddowns:

Get a tileset. I did that, because the ASCII hurts my eyes, and I don't care how many people go 'OMG Y U NO PLAY GAM PROPERLY IT R RETRO LOLZ'
I won't stop you from using a tileset, personally. I prefer ASCII, but i can understand why you say it's hard to interpret.
You get used to ASCII if you play enough.

[quote]I've been a bit under the weather with a cold, but it's not H1N1 this year so I'm happy. Remaining thingies to sort out with bees are mead, stinging and, after some more reading, splitting colonies over time so you can grow your apiary up to a respectable size without grabbing wilderness colonies every time (though it'll be faster to grab those when they are available). A given fortress can only sustain so many hives -- without actual flowers for now it's just going to be a cap after which they aren't as productive. I'm not sure exactly what it'll look like, but if you are collecting half of your hives and then splitting the other half back into those hives over and over I wouldn't be surprised. Incidental problems with swarming and mites or whatever might be fun for later, but it'll probably be pretty mechanical this time around.[/quote]

I use ASCII but in square form, and with a more natural colorscheme that doesn't rape the eyes. Feels good man
[editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
The game is kind of ugly to me with Mayday's. Or any tileset.
anyone wanna help me with the starting settings (skills, stuff to take with you)?
[QUOTE=scratch (nl);27729535]anyone wanna help me with the starting settings (skills, stuff to take with you)?[/QUOTE]
I usually start with:
2 proficient miners
2 proficient growers
1 proficient mason
1 proficient carpenter/woodcutter
1 novice appraiser/mechanic
