I've been trying to get into the game again, but I can't get past the whole initial stage due to the tedium and micromanagement involved. How do I make it not a chore?

How do I make it not a chore?
When you're on the original 7 (which sounds like it's a chore) just go overboard on testing out imaginative designs for things such as a forge, dormitory, etc. You won't get another (easy) chance to do it once you get to 40 or so Dwarves, after all.
Orkel, you should like this:
The tavern release will have non-lethal fighting because there'll be bar fights and we don't want bar fights to be like 'You punch him in the face, jamming the skull into the brain, killing him instantly' or whatever. We're going to have to change combat a bit to make fist fights work because right now fist fights are way too dangerous, but it should work out in the end.
That sounds like a good change, I agree that punches shouldn't result in the skull jamming into the brain, but a sword pommel would certainly do it quite easily (or pretty much anything else you can get your hands on, actually.)

Hey guys, hows the latest release in terms of stability and playability? I haven't played this since pre-DF2010 mind, I'm wondering how easy it would be to get to grips with the newest version or if I should wait for any particular bug fixes etc..

Besides that, a LOT has changed not only from 40d to DF2010, but from the older releases of 2010 and the latest releases. I'd highly recommend reading up on some of the bigger changes on the wiki, mainly about caverns and the military system.
bullshit
I don't mind it if they make it something you can only do if you're really strong and even then they make an outer and inner brain or something so at first the victim just gets a concussion/brain damage
Kind of a dumb question but, does putting multiple spikes in a spike tap increase it's effectiveness?
Kind of a dumb question but, does putting multiple spikes in a spike tap increase it's effectiveness?
Yes, 10 training spears in a danger room will make legendary soldiers in minutes. Likewise, 10 steel spears hitting someone will ruin their day.
Oh yay, a giant two headed man intercepted my migriation killing all the mammals. I drafted most of my wood workers. Got him killed after 98 report pages amd only lost5 dwarves though I will probably lose one more as he has an infection in his leg.
How come my Mason complains that there is no "non-economic hard rock"? There`s shale everywhere. [editline]25th April 2011[/editline] Now he is just standing there doing absolutely nothing. He`s about to die from thirst and hunger. [editline]25th April 2011[/editline] My farmers also don`t do anything.

Whether you can do this or not depends on the type of creature, but it's always worth a try. @above Your post almost made me tear up - I've had the exact same problem when I was starting out and it was the very first one I asked about on Facepunch. Your mason is stuck inside the workshop because you placed the door wrong and he built a solid element over it. The farmer issue is one of the following: a) you don't have a Farm Plot (b->p iirc) b) dwarves don't have the right labor enabled (v->p->l) c) the field is inaccessible d) you haven't set the field to sow the wanted plants (you do this in Q menu, it's usually plump helmets you want)
Fortress deaths have increased exponentially since I built a necropolis, I wonder why.
Ugh, why is your name familiar? Is there some reason why I'd know you?
I have no idea.
Fortress deaths have increased exponentially since I built a necropolis, I wonder why.
Dwarves are killing themselves to get the best spot.
Well, I don't think it would be because of lack of variety, because I have turtles and fish as well. [editline]24th April 2011[/editline] hey, what does purple expanding stuff mean? also, when I tell my dwarfs to build something, it never gets built, and when I press q over it, it says that the construction was suspended.
The purple stuff is miasma. It's really Fun.
You can minimize miasma by having refuse piles outside or behind doors. Good management of war victims of both sides and hunted animals is also crucial. Get those butcheries working and empty them.
Good god just got into a siege of 18 Crossbowmen, my hospital was full of injured, including my militia commander who got a cut lower spine, now he just crawls around in the hallways of my fortress, I need to find a way to put him out of his misery whilst having a corpse to bury.
flooding? danger room? starvation/thirst?

Can't they remove his legs?
flooding? danger room? starvation/thirst?
I'll probably do the danger room, since that would be how he'd want to go. Oh wow this is pathetic, he crawled back to the place where he tore his spine and just laid there, contemplating with the animals grazing outside (some of them with injuries as well.) I can just imagine what he was thinking. [editline]26th April 2011[/editline]
Sounds healthy to me. Can't they remove his legs?
Not really, and he seems to refuse using a crutch. On the positive side, I now have around 5-6 dedicated doctors ready at a moment's notice.
Looking back at my early burial chambers I realize I should've paid more attention on how the rooms would eventually expand to avoid embarrassment like this  . Oh, and be careful when placing Danger Rooms. So far I've had two babies and one child get impaled on the wooden spears :gonk: .
Only 3 of my dwarves have died so far. 2 of them went insane and died of thirst, one died when fighting the horse Zirilbm or something of that sort. we will miss you, wrestler. and fuck you zirilbim
For some reason, my butcher wont butcher a stray yak and horse corpse right next to is shop, it says that there aren't any dead animals close enough to the shop. Any idea what could be causing this problem? edit: in fact, he wont butcher anything unless I mark a live animal for slaughter
Listening to the podcast, this city shit is awesome. 17x17 embark size cities? I hope he puts quests and jobs you can do, for fucks sake it might be plausible to play your entire game in a city. [editline]27th April 2011[/editline] I hope you'll be able to own homes and shit.
