Well he hasn't dumped / hidden the stone in his stockpiles either
none of my military is eating, and they are near the food stockpile, which is able to be reached. they just recently killed a berserk dwarf, could this be related? i dont want to have unneeded deaths on my hands
[editline]27th April 2011[/editline]
alright, just figured out what was the problem. they still had the squad order to kill the berserk dwarf, even though she was already dead. dismissed them and they began to eat and drink.
Both of my mules died of starvation. I designated a grazing area but they never went to it.

Did you set the mules to the pasture? I think its i > n > N
I love how all my military has capes and hoods with different colors corresponding on their squad. And also how they finally all have full steel now.
I'm trying to build a sacrifice/blood bathing chamber that has grates on the floor to collect the blade of the sacrificed, but I don't know how I can get the people to be killed by the traps while standing on the grates, as I can't put traps onto the grates. Anyone have any ideas?

Ballista emplacements.

Giant Cave Spider.

Lets see some layouts.
If you have a few z-levels higher free, drop some walls on them by collapsing supports. It's tricky, though - you might penetrate a grate.
But I think a ballista is a great idea, as someone mentioned, as long as you have plenty of ammo for it.
This reminds me, did anyone succeed in murdering merchants with a ballista? They never seem to get hurt from it (what's more, they deflect the arrow according to the battle log) and my own dwarves behind them get their lungs poked out.

If you want to avoid contact with the victims, remember that ballistae can shoot through fortifications and, obviously, over channels.
I'm gonna play a bit of adventure mode, what skills should I take at the start? any tips?

Misc. Combat skill, maximum.
To be completely serious, I'd max out strength, agility, and put both toughness and endurance to High.
For skills, you definitely need dodge, shield skill, armor skill, and a weapon skill.
I turned myself into an accomplished biter, how can I make him bite?
In adventure mode, can you bite sleeping elf babies to death?

its one of the attack options when deciding what to use to attack someone
[editline]28th April 2011[/editline]
you attack with (shift+A)
In adventure mode, can you bite sleeping elf babies to death?
Yes.
How come my Mason complains that there is no "non-economic hard rock"? There`s shale everywhere.

It seems you only have Van halen, get some Bullet for my Valentine and then your dwarves will start their craft.
[sp]Mod Idea: Replace ore/mineral names with band/musician names. eg: Puddingstone is Bullet for my valentine while Granite (always a good sign) is Van halen[/sp]
Butcher him, it'll solve your food problems for at least a year. Whether you can do this or not depends on the type of creature, but it's always worth a try.
@above
Your post almost made me tear up - I've had the exact same problem when I was starting out and it was the very first one I asked about on Facepunch. Your mason is stuck inside the workshop because you placed the door wrong and he built a solid element over it.
The farmer issue is one of the following:
a) you don't have a Farm Plot (b->p iirc)
b) dwarves don't have the right labor enabled (v->p->l)
c) the field is inaccessible
d) you haven't set the field to sow the wanted plants (you do this in Q menu, it's usually plump helmets you want)
You forgot two.
E) Dwarves being dwarves and doing nothing but drink beer and eat.
F) Fun!
Ok so after I couldn't make heads or tails of fortress mode I tried adventure mode. My first character I had kill a dozen humans before geting mortally wounded by some farmer with a halberd, and then running off trying to find some forest retreat to maim, and then boogeymen destroyed me. Now I made another guy and am currently trying to find a forest retreat, and running the fuck away from boogeymen while enraged honeybadgers charge into them to get ripped apart.
So how the hell do I find a forest retreat.
[editline]28th April 2011[/editline]
Good god it's shaking the poor badger around by it's eye.
[editline]28th April 2011[/editline]
And I'm dead
Are there good (video)tutorials on adventure mode?
[editline]28th April 2011[/editline]
it's all quite confusing, so I just went attacking a group of humans and died after 10 seconds :v:

Sword skill is fucking boss, from what I've experienced.
Also I never knew shift+A was attack. I was confused on how to destroy human villages.
And another bunch mutilate me.
Get a farm, get a meeting area, get a dormitory, set up a still, and either get a mason's workshop up, or find a consistent source of wood and get a carpenter's workshop.
Those are the bare essentials for a fortress, until you start getting attacked of course.
When making a dormitory, do the X's just have to be over the beds for them to count as part of the dormitory?
When making a dormitory, do the X's just have to be over the beds for them to count as part of the dormitory?
I believe so.
I learend today efter trying to build walls with a bridge as a support does not work very well.
I now have two less masons and two less Steel clad swordsmen becasue I placed them to to close the the bridge so they were pushed out into the lava fields.
Stupid question but how do I find towns and stuff, when I get to places that are "Forest Retreats" there is nothing there.
[editline]29th April 2011[/editline]
I'm on a task to kill some creature of the night, I am in it's lair but I have no idea how to find it.
[editline]29th April 2011[/editline]
Found them and they massacred my party and kicked my skull in.

Alright, I guess I'll go with the ballista. Also, is it possible at all to change the name of your fort/group after you embarked? I don't care if I have to edit any files
