What kind of massive wuss gets killed by a capybara?
Well, I think he dodged into the river and drowned.
are cave spiders dangerous? I just dug into a maaaassive underground water cavern thing, the walls are lined with gold and I am greedily hacking away at it.
but I briefly saw a cave spider run by and I know he'll be back for me
I posted my only guard near the mine entrance but I worry he won't be enough

Cave spiders are harmless and are mere snacks for your cats.
Giant cave spiders make cats mere snacks, as well as any hapless Dwarves you send down into the caverns to collect silk, they're the classic non-megabeast monster you never want to meet in Dwarf Fortress.
Spider webs doesn't mean there's giant cave spiders down there. Every single cave I've seen has webs, but having an actual GCS come on the map is a rare event.
I must get he most boring Forts ever I never get anyone or anything attacking me.
I've never had a giant cave spider in any of my forts. :saddowns:

Before you embark you should check if there even is a goblin civilization.

That would make sense.

What do goblin camps look like on embark screen?
I just killed 5 bandits by swinging around the corpse of their leader at them. One of them had the Leader body get lodged firmly in his upper torso.
Now I am dual-wielding corpse-chucks. And I'm dead.
But not before getting 87 notable kills and 50ish other kills. Must have killed 5 Rocs, a hydra, a dragon, two titans, 3 consorts to a monster, the monster, a cyclops, and tons of people/kobolds/gobbos. Regarded as a legendary hero in the eyes of almost the entire world.

MUST DRAW
ART SKILLS FAILING
STICK MEN DRAWN
RAAAGH WHY CANT I DRAW.
what's a good way to start a surface fortress?
Depends on if you want a stone village or a wooden village. If a wooden village, then obviously a heavily forested area. If a stone village, it won't matter that much but the area should still have a river or a stream and probably no aquifer.

Wood probably. Oh well, time to see how it goes!

What should I first start with building? Workshop houses? Walls?
Workshops don't need a roof above them so you can keep them in the open for a while. First off select a large-ish area for you to build in (seriously large, as if you want a true village you won't build most houses over three levels tall), and then dig a moat around it. Chop down all the trees inside the area and build a bridge over the moat. Preferably linked to a lever, but that requires stone I think. Depends on how much you wish to use underground materials for.
Then build a meeting room, a well, start fishing from the river / murky pools and make a dormitory. Walls can come last as they require a lot of material.
Remember, if you're truly badass you will build a room for every dwarf, so that maybe five dwarves live in one house.
[editline]6th May 2011[/editline]
Also, you might wish to dig cellars for farming / storage (no deeper than one z-level though) since it might take a while to get a good supply of above-ground seeds, and food left in the open will go bad.
Where can i get this? The link doesn't work
current progress

I vaguely recall something about Orkel and his own version of DF w/ a texturepack or mods or something. Anyone care to link me to it/remind me what exactly it had?

Objects go to the raw folder and art+init to the data folder, overwrite all and create a new world afterwards
also new devlog
Toady One There are about 150 little places where the old undead come up, in terms of their properties and so on, and I've just been updating all of those. A few that apply are in the raws now -- for instance, the old zombie speed modifiers (it can't try to figure out the speed from the state of the bodies, since few of the bodies should work in the first place). First sighting of a new zombie from the fort wilderness (reindeer).
So I figured I would ask you guys about this, as it has now happend about 3 times, do you ever get a single male dwarf in a wave of migrants with two kids who are not related to eachother? Every time this happens to me I like to think that the father dwarf is just a pimp who knocks up a bunch of random woman dwarfs.
Ugh, the most annoying thing in this game is to dig out rooms and make more furniture for immigrants. What's the most efficient size for a room, have been doing 3x3 rooms.
Most efficient would probably be 1x1 or 1x2, but I prefer 3x3 rooms myself.

Most efficient for me is this:

Don't like the look of that though, personally. I designed mine like so: (Old picture before they were carved out.)

The +'s are the bedrooms themselves, everything else is just hallways etc, middle bit that is carved out is the central staircase and the dump chute.

Laws are going to be interesting. Like inquiring about the law of a city with a gate guard and finding out they don't allow certain animals, materials or even weapons/armor.
I imagine that would be the basis for a black market feature, where you can purchase or supply contraband.
Speaking of animals, I desire mounts. That way I can ride a giant 6 legged salamander through caves.

I haven't played for ages. What the heck is all this night creature/undead stuff Toady is talking about on the site? Can someone point me to a devlog or something that explains it?

It basically means that undeadness can now be a disease.
So treating infections in dwarves while playing in a haunted area just got one thousand times more important.
I haven't played for ages. What the heck is all this night creature/undead stuff Toady is talking about on the site? Can someone point me to a devlog or something that explains it?
Basically.
There are now curses in addition to the already existing diseases. They are also procedurally generated. Undead are now around because of an undead curse, same with skellies and whatnot. There will also be vampire curses and werewolf curses and so on. Everything can be spread to other beings, cursing them too.
This leads to Fun stuff like getting actual sieges by zombie armies, and the world you generate somehow being in a zombie apocalypse where there are very little living and thousands upon thousands of undead inhabit the lands (if lucky, or unlucky depending how you view it)
Also megacities, with catacombs, sewers and dungeons beneath them to explore and loot, and ancient ruins in the wilderness. Ruins and cities only affect adventure mode, curses are also in fortress mode
[editline]7th May 2011[/editline]
Oh. And areas can be cursed too. So if you inhabit in a cursed area, and get many deaths, later on there might be a sudden zombie uprising in your tombs, all your dead coming alive and attacking your dwarves.
Also ninja ghost possessions, where the ghosts of your dead dwarves secretly slip into your living and then they all go nuts at the same time, you have no idea who they get into though before all hell breaks loose
[editline]7th May 2011[/editline]
all of the above comes in the next release afaik
[editline]7th May 2011[/editline]
in a few weeks I guess
So, I'm currently fighting a titan. It has over 40 kills. It is a hill titan. It must be something terrifying, right?
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
It is an enormous green scaled tarantula. Going with tradition, it has a poisonous bite.
[editline]6th May 2011[/editline]
I don't think I will survive.
