I've had that happen a couple times. It sucks because usually the entire world is at peace. So no sieges. I can't wait until we're able to wage war on other civs by bring armies onto the world map.
And that armies require food. Which makes wagons important, and camp sites along the route you travel.
Someone made an awesome Dwarf Fortress USB stick box and holder.

Except slimes and bugs. Those bastards did not evolve to have bones.

DO want.
Although I imagine that USB stick would break quickly.
Their USB port is probably right at desk level anyway.
Here is the scenario: long ago a powerful king discovered the secrets of life and death. Whether it was from an evil god or his own nefarious research, none can say. All the people knew is that while he reigned, the dead walked the earth. Legions of undead zombies risen from ancient battlefields built him a mighty tower from which his ghastly armies stalked the land. Will the dwarf fortress be next? Happy Mother's Day!
Does this mean that somewhere in each genned game there will be a dark spire filled to the brim with undead, monsters, and an all powerful God-Sorcerer? Sounds like an average D&D session. Sign me up.

It may not be frequent, but just having the chance for something like that would be sick as fucckkk

Gigantic fucking superbattle up this demon tower, leading a small army of heavily armored soldiers who all get steadily killed off.
At the highest floor, you face off against the godlike evil sorcerer who caused all the trouble that's been happening. He raises his staff with a mighty yell, and...
"The spinning vomit hits Urist Mcevilsorceror in the head, jamming the skull through the brain!"
My simple arena has been a success, and I've been steadily building my army. What project should I undertake?

Build a forward base in the caverns, and launch attacks on all the beastys that inhabit them from it. It's great for training your military and generally hilarious/fun.
So I got into dem dwarves, and I have some questions about the water:
How to I drain the lakes that are inside the mountain?
In my current mountain t here is frozen water, Ice Walls. If I mine through those, do they turn into water?

The God-Sorcerer stands up. The phylactery around his neck glows. The God-Lich-Sorcerer arises. The God-Lich-Sorcerer puts head back on Neck. The God-Lich-Sorcerer casts a massive bolt of lightning.

Get the Lazy Newb pack., or this one, though this is older, but a very nice tutorial comes with it that teaches the basics.

Once I have the time, I figure that I'm going to give all 150 of my civilians crossbows and full leather and put them on the great wall. After that I'm going to unleash the clowns. THE GREAT CLOWN SIEGE. OUR BOLTS WILL BLOCK OUT THE SUN.

Everything the elves build is made of wood. :ironicat:

If you didn't know its because they use trees that die naturally. Dwarves use trees that die naturally... with the help of an axe.

Natural enough for me. Help them elves feel the benefits of 'natural' death why don't you. :v:

still need help with this one
Dwarves don't want to drink water! They want booze. Brew some from plump helmets
still need help with this one
There is a possibility that upon turning into water it could freeze again, fatally trapping Urist McMiner in a block of ice.
Since I can't be bothered to start a new fortress now and then another one when the new version comes out I'll just try mods on my current DF until.
So, Genesis or Legends of Forlorn Realms?

Just as you normally would I guess, make a single-block tunnel to it then when ready mine the last block. Worst that can happen you'll lose a miner (be sure to send the shittiest one).

Yeah I know, but these 4x4 lakes inside my mountain are in the way, and I'm afraid to mine out the walls :ohdear:
I am really new to this, how should I drain the water? I see that there are floodgates, how do those work?
and the tutorial I used says that dwarves drink water, if they are injured/sick, no? then how do I channel some water down SAFELY to the quarters?

so the water from those inside lakes drain from there, and I can use the drained waters space, for like, farming?
[editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
God damn, I finally found a good place to start making my fortress, then suddenly, rhesus monkeys out of nowhere, they keep harassing everyone.
Mine up to the wall, put a floodgate to block the tile. Hook it up to a lever. Now you can control how much water is released.
[editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
Though it has a dwarf-delay.

Find a cave and build workshops in it, as if it's a market.
[editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
I have a problem, a glassmaker has a mood, but there are problems:
1: there's no sand around
2: I made no glass yet.
Should I block him up with walls and starve to death?
I decided to try it out and i'm already confused. I installed the Lazynewb pack but what is the yellow stuff meant to be? I'm using the Phoebus graphics.

Click k and place the marker over it, it should show the name of the item.
