Group name: The Banner of Virgins. Facepunch, right?
Okay, it's settled, next group will definitely be named that. I already started the adventure. Not a big update, but it's here just to show you guys how it will begin. The Adventure Begins...or does it? Day 1 Fort: The Faces of Punching Group: The Cold-Faces of Punching (Pretend it's The Banner of Virgins) Neo Kabuto - Gem Cutter Orkel - Gem Cutter Canuhearme? - Gem Setter TheStabbyBunny - Gem Setter Thorny - Expedition Leader + Gem Setter Grasp - Appraiser (Trader) cheesedelux Appraiser (Trader) I settled on a plain made completely of ice. No trees. No vegetation. Just freezing and sinister. I begin to name my dwarves when I see a unit on the list called, "Blizzard Man". Blizzard Man "A large humanoid monster from the wild tundra. It has translucent skin, icicles for teeth, red glowing eyes, and pointed ears. It's very fat and its eyes are amber." Holy shit, that has to be a terrifying sight. Anyways, this blizzard man starts to chase Thorny, our dwarven appraiser and expedition leader and Canuhearme, the gem setter. The monster chases the two up a hill where the rest of the dwarves stand unaware of the horror going on. Canuhearme jukes out the beast and leaves Thorny to die to his inevitable doom. The two seem to be running at the same pace so it doesn't look like the beast will give up anytime soon. Well, we can only hope for the best that Thorny doesn't come bring the beast to the rest of th- God dammit. The group scatters in fear running around the barren tundra for some kind of escape. The blizzard man catches up with his prize and with a quick flick of its wrist it breaks Thorny's right arm, beats the shit out of him, and finally kills him. However, the beast isn't finished, he runs back down the hill near the dwarven wagon and chases another dwarf, cheesedelux. In a hungry fury, the blizzard man fells cheesedelux. Just when you thought the carnage was over, a stray cat runs up to the blizzard man and leads him away from the others! A hero! The cat sacrifices its life to the blizzard man leaving it to wander around aimlessly full; away from the wagon and other dwarves. A snow storm comes, it's cold and the dwarves are unhappy. Losing two friends in the first 5 seconds of their arrival must be pretty devastating. Losing a cat is also devastating seeing as butchering the offspring was going to be a main way of feeding the dwarves. For now, they're running on temporary I command Neo Kabuto to start mining out a small den so we don't have to deal with what other foul creatures the snow can fathom. I begin to stockpile everything from the wagon into organized piles. Even the bodies of our fallen comrades. Since it's cold, I plan on making the fortress really deep to keep them warm. We pray to Armok that we find water deep below the depths of this hellish landscape. To be continued tomorrow... Any suggestions on how to find warmth or water in this place?
I assume that the cat already had a dwarf, so once it dies, the spiral of death shall move toward the center of slaughter.
To be continued tomorrow... Any suggestions on how to find warmth or water in this place?
You're already on the right track, go down as far as possible as fast as possible to find cavern water.
You're already on the right track, go down as far as possible as fast as possible to find cavern water.
he doesn't have any miners.
he doesn't have any miners.
This is true, but I drafted Neo Kabuto as our first miner and (I forgot who else) some other dwarf as the other since you start out with two rusty pickaxes. Even if the dwarf has no points in that class it can still learn it, they just won't be a fast or efficient worker. We've carved out a small den with a storage room and a second floor so far. In fact, you can see its entrance in the last picture at the top right. It's just all ice so it blends in.
Now find adamantine. [editline]17th February 2011[/editline] What is a lye bearing barrel
Now find adamantine. [editline]17th February 2011[/editline] What is a lye bearing barrel
A barrel of lyes. But actually it's just a barrel containing lye.
Okay, I can't wait any longer! Settling on a frozen river with proficient jewelers all named after random people in this thread who are determined to build "The Faces of Punching". I'll update with pictures either tonight or tomorrow. Starting Dwarf Names: Neo Kabuto Orkel Canuhearme? TheStabbyBunny Thorny Grasp cheesedelux
Thanks :) [editline]17th February 2011[/editline] oh great I'm dead haha
There's talk on the official forums that metals have become incredibly rare. Some say it's good, some say it's bad. For example, want to make a pyramid out of gold? Too bad, gold is rare as fuck and you're lucky to get a couple of bars per year if any at all. People who like minecraftish sandboxiness have cried, and those who like realism and challenge love it. Haven't played yet to see for myself, but that's what the forums say. [editline]17th February 2011[/editline] That is, metals are much rarer both in the ground, and from traders. Sounds quite good to me.
There's talk on the official forums that metals have become incredibly rare.
Well, shit. Adventure mode's going to be much harder.
It still needs balancing. Often not even your parent dwarven civ has any iron at all. And goblins always show up clad in iron so there's no way to fight them because you can't make any military without better metals.
Ok well that sounds a little troublesome.
Toady should make the veins that do exist larger, and possibly spread across multiple z-levels, that way discovering a massive, 5 z-level spanning gold vein would be a cause for celebration. It sorta works that way in real life anyway. [editline]17th February 2011[/editline] Also, Toady should add "Metal availability" as something in the world gen file.

Speaking of additions/contributions, you should also have the ability to make a craftsman (whether it be armor, trade good, etc.) "put effort" into making an object, that way you could consistently get masterwork items with a Master Dwarf, however it would take 25% longer per item or so. It'd be easy to do as well, just add an increase in the percentage chance to get certain qualities, decrease in the percentage to get worse qualities, and increased time. [editline]17th February 2011[/editline] My beautiful automerge!
But I just found a big vein of gold nuggets
Then you're lucky. Did you generate the world in .19?

Okay, so I've ordered my dwarves to dig, but for some reason only one of them goes to do so, how can I force more of them to? Edit: Figured it out.
Okay, so I've ordered my dwarves to dig, but for some reason only one of them goes to do so, how can I force more of them to?
How many picks do you have? Furthermore, how many have the mining skill enabled?
How many picks do you have? Furthermore, how many have the mining skill enabled?
Only the amount of picks I started with, and I just figured out the whole mining skill thing. Thanks.
