Woah. Seems that I've missed out on the new release. This is what I get for not regularly visiting the dev log.
This is why you should learn to play before doing community challenges. Even the fact that you didn't give the dwarves a proper skill set...
Someone asked me to make them all jewelers and such, so I did. Also, I think it's more fun learning new things while showing my slow, yet progressive failures to the community. For the whole stairs bit, I'm just having trouble, errr, digging back up... I'm now down about two z-levels and I can't make an upward staircase out or anything.
Can I ask what graphics set that is? I'm now down about two z-levels and I can't make an upward staircase out or anything. I could be horribly wrong because I haven't played in a while but eh. Ironhand. Dig an up stair then an up/down above it, or just a down if it's one level.
This is why you should learn to play before doing community challenges. Even the fact that you didn't give the dwarves a proper skill set...
It's more fun if you take challenges like that head-on
Wouldn't Dwarves still see Adamantine toy boats as the greatest thing ever, though?
I asked you to make them all jewelers because i wanted you to lose
Yes, but you didn't realize you can give any dwarf pretty much any skill. TL;DR everyone dies Day 2 Ok, fine! Maybe I'm not the best at this game, but who cares, I had fun (I think). After the recent attack from the blizzard man, I think it's time we actually get inside the damn fort. So my first idea is to- It's an ice wolf. 'Nuff said. The wolf lets loose a bellowing howl and two more wolves come to its aid and slays Canuhearme. It's feeding time. (Okay, maybe it didn't howl, but that's what I imagined.) Time for a military. And so the Martyrs of Mining was formed. What a soon to be ironic name. I figured Grasp would be best suited as head-of-command (just look at his name). TheStabbyBunny would've also been a good candidate for best commander name, but he was mining. However, with a little luck and the mashing of most of the keys on my keyboard, I found it, the squad command page! The whole fort turns on the wolf who bit Canuhearme and just clobber the shit out of it. I honestly did not expect dwarves to be that strong. Victory! They begin to retreat but not before the dwarves smash the living shit out of all of them. Leaving a nice, scenic view of dead wolf corpses lying on the hill just outside their fort. And what do the dwarves do after this nice victory? They all simultaneously fall asleep next to the corpses... Well, okay! Seeing this makes me realize we really need to find some ore to make some beds. Once they awake from their first battle, I see that my little stockpile room is complete and order them to move all of the belongings to the inside of the fort. Now we need to start delving into the frozen tundra depths. So, umm, does anyone know how to do that...? Oh wait, there's this option here, 'Stairs'. *30 minutes later* "WHAT HAVE I DONE." I didn't know stairs can be this horrible. I don't have any pictures for this disaster, but I'll try to describe it. A dizzying catacomb of tunnels, downward stairs, and cold ice is what my two miners (TheStabbyBunny and Neo Kabuto) will now get to know as home thanks to me. Making an up staircase is impossible. Removing the already down staircase is also impossible. Before I could even remedy to situation something flashed on my screen. "Grasp has been interrupted...By a Blizzard Man" It has returned. It hungers...for more... Well, good thing we left those wolf carcases laying around so it would attract the blizzard man, guys. I draft Grasp back into the military and tell it to fight the beast. The fight is intense, but Grasp is exhausted, hungry, and miserable. He doesn't look like he will hold so I draft Orkel into the army. Go get him! So, while this is going on, Orkel is just helping him self for a drink in the stockpile room. What the fuck! I said GO! I set Orkel to kill mode and he runs over dripping a dwarven brew from his mouth to help Grasp. Grasp is soon knocked unconscious and Orkel gets a preemptive strike on the beast. They both seem even has the fight literally lasts for 2 minutes. Something flies across the field and then another something. It's a lower and front tooth from the blizzard man. He ripped out its teeth. The blizzard man leaves the unconscious Grasp on the ground as Orkel goes for running monster. Soon however, Grasp suffocates to death. Orkel is now exhausted, but he is relentless to get his kill. However, the beast has recuperation during his run and uses this chance to make a quick turn around and clothesline the shit out of Orkel, killing him immediately. Since I know I am doomed. I set TheStabbyBunny to engrave a final message on the walls of the fort. However, he dies before he could. Well, it was a fun fort, even if it was extremely quick and pathetic. I'll do this again, but in an easier going area. Thanks guys.
Give me the save and I will reclaim the fort
Give me the save and I will reclaim the fort
Any particular website you want me to upload it on? I like dropbox if you don't care to download and register for it. By the way, started a new fort to hone my skills. I hope you update us on the reclaimed fort.
Just use filesmelt.
Did anyone notice that the game auto-saves every season ? Or am I incredibly late ?
Dwarf Fortress got on RPS's list over important PC games. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/02/18/the-greatest-pc-games-ever-5/

This is pretty random, but, remember that story where the guy hit the HFS (in .40d, pre-DF2010), held off that bottlenecked tunnel for as long as he could with ballistas, then retreated to the fortress, where the last dwarf and the last clown fell into a chasm, but then, he noticed the last dwarf was stuck on a ledge, he ordered him to engrave one last engraving? Is it weird that I found it really sad that it was a demon, with dwarves laughing?
Give me the save and I will reclaim the fort
I just realized I already started a fort. Can I still give you the save? It's the same region the old fort was in, but you might have to abandon my current one. Speaking of my current fort: I just discovered my first underground cavern...with a downward passage. I was ONE staircase away from releasing a hoard of amphibious warriors. This is amazing. Their base has grass and flowers underground and a nice lake next to them. Definitely going to make an underground city after I kill them.

Do I need to feed animals now? I have a couple yaks in my new fortress, and it says they're hungry. What can I get them to eat?
Do I need to feed animals now? I have a couple yaks in my new fortress, and it says they're hungry. What can I get them to eat?
Yaks are surface herbivores. Therefore, try to forage for some above-ground plants.
the new squad system really turned me off from the new version. There's a point at which things just get to be too much of a hassle to be fun. I don't want to spend an hour micromanaging my squads' training regimen only to have them get torn to pieces in less than 30 seconds in actual combat. Starting this again, what's a good tileset?
Starting this again, what's a good tileset?
I'd say you're silly because you need one, but Mayday's is pretty good, I guess.
Starting this again, what's a good tileset?
no such thing
Orkel has to update his tileset.
Is it possible to move water from a river into a channel that's somewhere else?
