fffffuuuuuuu
I just got 22 migrants and I only had 14 dwarves before. I mean, it's good to have more dwarves, but now I have to give them all names, jobs, and bedrooms. But at least now shit will get done faster.

I find dealing with immigrants the most tedious part of the game. I would probably play it more often, but having a ton of immigrants arrive and the having me spend half an hour to an hour sorting them out, grouping them, giving them jobs, and trying to get food for them really puts me off, I wish there was an ingame mechanic in which you could forbid immigrants arriving, aside from killing them all.
Is it possible to move water from a river into a channel that's somewhere else?
If you channel the river to the channel, yes.

1. Don't name them.
2. Set the skilled ones to specialize in their labor. For the peasants and/or dump-skill laborers, make them do farming or masonry. Let em do hauling and cleaning too, it's nice to have a large amount of pack mules.
3. Always have too much food. Helps in emergencies and for migrant waves.
4. Bedrooms are optional. Give em a dorm. They might not love it, but unless they are important or on the verge of tantrum, there's really no need.
For some reason, I can't build any hives, despite having made some in a workshop?
any ideas as to why?
I have bees on my map, so it can't bee that.

Are you using dwarf therapist?
Some people look down on it, but god damnit, it saves eons of time.

Or if you build an aqueduct using pumps and walls.

Could you use buckets, or is that impossible?

Actually what I do is give the proficient ones jobs, and the rest get enlisted into armies and stuck into danger rooms 24/7 so I my fortress becomes unstoppable. I just wish there was a feature that allowed you to forbid immigrants arriving, 2 waves is enough for me.
Could you use buckets, or is that impossible?
I suppose if you used a pond that would work but take quite a long time, or be nigh impossible in hotter areas.
Found out about that hive problem, apparently stone hives don't work.

Smash them with your colossal bridge. I have my fort entrance and then mini-Auschwitz outside, for extremely shitty unskilled immigrants that will get my dwarves tantruming.
Wheres all the metal

In the next version.

Just build a maze and fill it with cyclops and shit. Throw all migrants into it, and if they make it out the other side, then give them a job.

There is but it's so rare that people have generated 20 worlds in a row where no civilization had access to iron
there's always goblinite
In theory if I were to assign all my bees to a cage, would they actually go out of it when it opened or whatever?
if that does work, with a quick bit of editing, warbees should be Fun.

Stone age simulation?
Stone age simulation?
Stone age simulation where you get ravaged by advanced iron-clad goblins every now and then with no materials to fight them with.
I just drowned abunch of human traders, they had abunch of armor and shit.
How do you melt stuff now? I don't see the option in the smelter.
there's always goblinite
Good luck killing them with wooden weapons!
Good luck killing them with wooden weapons!
War animals and wood traps. That's the Kobold way!

Only a matter of time until you need water and yeast to make alcohol.
My latest fortress was going great, untill a fisherdwarf got beaten for failing a mandate for gold items.
he then went into a tantrum, and as he had (somehow) incredibly high strength, he killed the person he lashed out at, his lover. the fisherdwarf then went beserk.
I sent my military after him, but they got pummeled into goop. As i had settled in a volcano, things only got worse. He punched several dwarves into the magma, untill no-one was left sane.
after the other insane dwarves had died, he ran out of the fortress, setting off the pressure plates, retracting the bridge, but he was across already, he ran outside...
...and got turned into a dwarven pincushion by a goblin ambush.
Such is life in dwarf fortress.
My dwarf is in a fey mood and saying "I must have yarn cloth!"
There's bin full of pig tail fiber cloth right next to her. I guess she means silk or something? I don't know what the fuck

I don't recall anything like yarn in any DF version, maybe .19 added it? Try shearing sheep and getting the cloth from that, it's what .19 added.
[editline]20th February 2011[/editline]
Yeah
Sheep, llamas and alpacas (and trolls for goblins) can be sheared and the wool can be spun into yarn.
god damnit toady.

So even if I can find metal I can't smelt it into bars?
