Yea. Put a fork in a fire for like an hour then throw it in water. By his logic there should be a small explosion.
Yea. Put a fork in a fire for like an hour then throw it in water. By his logic there should be a small explosion.
A candle flame is equivalent to around 1000 degrees Celsius. That's not nearly enough for any kind of major explosion to happen. And it's not really an "explosion" in the traditional mushroom cloud & fireball sense, but rather a rapid expansion of steam that disrupts surrounding material in a similar way of a traditional explosion. Read up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrothermal_explosion, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_explosion and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BLEVE
Hydrothermal explosions occur when superheated water trapped below the surface of the earth rapidly converts from liquid to steam, violently disrupting the confining rock. Boiling water, steam, mud, and rock fragments called breccia are ejected over an area of a few meters up to several kilometers in diameter
This could have happened for example at the Chernobyl NPP, since Reactor 4 which was on fire was melting its way through the floors of the plant and almost hit the flooded tunnels of coolant water under the power plant, which would have made the whole power plant explode spewing radioactive material all over Europe (it was prevented by three divers who dived in the radioactive water, drained the water, but at least two died after they made it back). I know this isn't exactly on-topic but it's :science: which could very possibly relate to DF. (Read: I know too much useless information and I feel a need to share it with people)
That's actually very helpful for what I was doing. Time to make walking bombs. Going to give them alcoholic blood, should be a giggle when they are butchered.
Uh I have a major problem I found a perfect area, perfectly flat land. Temperate, calm, heavily forested. There was also a river and no aquifer. I said fuck yes and embarked. When I got in game: A: NO FUCKING RIVER, not even underground. B: NO FUCKING TREES. C: EVERYTHING WAS COVERED IN SNOW. This goes against everything the game told me before embarking.
That's... Strange. You sure you didn't accidentally move one map square in some direction a millisecond before embarking?
That's... Strange. It's obvious that the embarking algorithm decided that a biome like that was the closest to the goods.
Embarking puts you in the best place to start mining. It's obvious that the embarking algorithm decided that a biome like that was the closest to the goods.
I was under the impression it attempts to put you at the center of your embark zone
How do I make my archers actually shoot at the archery targets? The bolts are there, I assigned the bolts as ammunition for their squad, I built 4 targets and made it an archery range in the correct dir and they have their crossbows (they are set as active/training).
Archery targets are bugged to hell and back, if you want to train their marksdwarf and archery skill, assign them as hunters with crossbows.
How do I get them to pick up the crossbow and go out hunting?
they just grab one that's free when you assign them to hunt, the same thing happens with miners.
How do I get them to pick up the crossbow and go out hunting?
I don't really know, I'm not accustomed to the new version. This always happens with new versions of DF, whenever I'm about to learn every secret of a build there's another major update, just like the 2D -> 3D transition. I'd probably just set hunting as their only task, don't hunters normally choose crossbows as their hunting weapons? Mine did, at least.
I've been playing for about a week now and my fortress is going great. My mayor is being an ass tho. It's the second time around he goes and get butthurt over nickel items. To be specific he want 3 nickel items to be made. Problem is, I don't have any nickel. I don't want to atom smash him, because he's an amazing manager and broker. Is there a way I can deal with him? [editline]4th March 2011[/editline] My mayor got mad and decided to blame one of my Marksdwarves I offloaded the job of broker and manager to other people. I might just smash his atoms.
-Snip- Forgot to define tissue thickness.
so i have 16 dwarves lots of weapons armor food and alcohol but i get no immigrants i think it has something with me telling the elf to go fuck himself when he asked me if i could stop cutting trees, beacuse right after that the immigrants stopped coming
Immigrants don't come for a while if you have many dwarf deaths in your fort
none of my dwarfs have died [editline]5th March 2011[/editline] also its been around 5-6 years since last immigration
Have you been trading much? If it's not that there could be no other dwarven civs left.
there is a dwarven, human and elven civillization still existing
Are population changes now handled when dwarfmode is playing out too?
The first bugfix release should be out in a few days (was said on march 3rd, so I guess it's close now). After that Toady will spend ~2 weeks fixing old bugs, thank god. The one coming soon is just bugfixes relating to the new stuff he added in .19
is there any solution for getting new dwarves? i have gotten no immigration the last 10 years the dwarfs make no babies there are still dwarf civs kicking around and i have lots of food, alcohol, weapons and armor but i have no use for it since i get no dwarfs
You definitely haven't had your fortress for 10 years, I can tell that you're just deciding that it felt like 10 years. Trade more and you'll get them eventually.

Any way to check?
Press z, look at the current year in the corner. Then remember what year you started at. (Default is 250)
Was playing adventurer mode and normally I get mauled by the first quest you do but I managed to utterly dominate three quests right off the bat. Spouse of a moon troll, goblin bandit chief, whatever the third one was, and a cougar.
I was running out of ideas for my fortress so I went looking on the magmawiki for inspiration. I'm going to build a room over my arena that allows me to easily drop creatures in. It's a essentially going to be a animal/pit combination on top. Where my dwarves will drop the creatures in. Then, an empty room with a large retractile bridge. That way I can prevent certain creatures from flying out or breaking my hatch covers or something like that. and finally my arena. From top to bottom you have Dropping Area Bridge Arena [editline]6th March 2011[/editline] This is definitely going to be faster than linking cages to a a lever. Doing so takes a shit ton of time because I can only go one cage at the time because I'm linking to one lever.
They told me about the bogeymen, but I didn't listen. They told me, man. They told me, bro.
Can you even build cages on bridges?
