Dwarf Fortress v13 - Orkel looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!

I have this huge population and I need to lose a few creatures. I caged every animal that I could cage. Is there a good way to reduce population?
I was thinking I could get rid of the animals because they're more of a pain than anything and possibly the children too since they're useless.
I know I skipped several versions after the buggy mess that was 31_01, but I still find it pretty frustrating that military dwarves take soooo long to train... and apparently goblins are overpowered now? I thought they were just destroying my dwarves because they're forever "dabbling" in every military-related skill despite all their training.
Goblins are overpowered because they always attack with iron armor and weapons, since most people now lack even the most basic weapons grade metal, you can see where the problem is.
I just looked at the military system...
Holy fuck. I mean, I like how in-depth Dwarf Fortress is, but this is just retarded.
Ok, so here's how I'll deal with my population problem. I made 2 burrows.
The first burrow is called "SuperHappyFunPlace". This burrow is located right under a retracted bridge.
The second burrow is called "The Hug Zone". This one is located in my arena which I happen to be filling with naked goblins and useless animals.
I was thinking of turning these burrows in "Day care centers" I would assign all the children to them. Then maybe pull a few levers.
That makes me think. I'm going to need to expand my crypt.

I miss the old military system.
You can't draft every single one of your 200 dwarves in a couple seconds in this one. :saddowns:

Personally the only useful screen the new one has is the ability to make uniforms anyway.
So how come there are only 3 kinds of training weapons? Are hammers and maces just safe to train with?
It only occured to me how insane my resolution was when the entire embark area I'd been in for two years wasn't not scrolling because of the resolution, but the fact that the entire thing fits into two screens (Vertically and horizontally)
I'd actually forgotten what it was like not having almost the entire fort fit onto one screen.
31.12 was pretty stable.
What resolution were you on?
0.28.181.40d is where the shit's at. Or the 2d version.
Indeed. 40d and 23a are still the best.

After an entire season of exploratory mining I found quite a lot of Copper ore. I've since turned some of it into some swords, spears, breastplates and helms. Do I stand a chance?
Do someone have any idea of making a fortress with a goal or so. Something unique that can give me some motivation, I do want to play but still I don't want to. Sounds ridiculous right?

You could try making an above-ground fortress. Don't go underground for anything except farming and digging up stone. Or some other gimmick, like never using plump helmets.
Maybe build a giant pyramid fort and have all the dwarves live in that
Or maybe, using different kinds of stone and/or metal, you could make a floor with a pixel-art image in it, like those minecraft people do with their blocks.
I am trying to make an above ground fort right now.
31.21 is out
A quick hotfix release with only 2 major bugfixes that appeared in .20

Why does checking on the king's thoughts crashes my game?

Maybe they aren't meant for peasants... :P

What word of getting dwarf therapist to work for .21?
Bogeymen ad Cougars. Goddamn it.
Getting besieged by skeletal turkey non-stop. :argh:

He holds the structure of the entire universe together with his mind. It's a very fragile thing, though. Touching it may overbalance his thoughts and cause the unraveling of that universe. That's probably what happened.

Only in DF.
fukken zombie hoary marmots wandered toward my fort and suddenly I have 80 pages of "Urist McDwarf cancels [job]: Interrupted by zombie hoary marmot"
Finally I just had to tell my lumberjack dwarf to kill them all. Which, of course, he did easily.
Damnit, my mechanic and all my miners are on break, right when i need them.
I put a bunch of naked goblins and a cage full of random tamed animals. I though that the goblins would just punch my kittens to death. Of course, I forgot that I had a black bear in that cage. All the goblins got eviscerated.

I learned something today. If you drop a floor and there's another floor underneath it will collapse as well...
Oh god the grass in evil areas. The worm grass. Oh god I'm blind.
What's this about eye stalk grass and all that in evil biomes? Is it not released yet or am I missing it somehow because I embarked in a terrifying marsh mountain thing whatever
my fortress is really boring right now, any ideas to spice it up instead of waiting for megabeasts?
