Just.. train. Sparring I think. I followed the wiki's sparring instructions. Also one of my dorfs randomly died in the dining room. :S
They spar and train like they're supposed to, that's a good thing. So they worked afterall. He might have died from a failed mood or something.
Liquid Dwarf's should have a chance to become gelatinous monsters akin to T-1000 from Terminator 2.
And, depending on their mood before liquidation, either be friendly (and addable to squads), hostile, or neutral.
I only just started playing, so I'm just getting the hang of things. I'd sent one dwarf to work chopping trees (took me ages to figure out how to do that) and another to mine into the nearest mountain. I was trying to figure out how to get the tree chopping dwarf to collect the logs when I get the message "Steve has cancelled Dig - dangerous mining conditions". What I'd thought was a pool that I could use to fish in was actually the bottom of a lake in the hill above, which proceeded to flood the cave, trapping Steve in his rocky tomb. :sigh:

I shall call my expedition leader 'Steve' in memorial of your poor minedwarf. :smith:
I gave them all nicknames when their professions were too long to fit on the screen... but I made sure to give them all professions! Long live Id Einhold, Ideas Guy!
Some dude made a zinc boot artifact. Derp. Argh, why do I never have enough food or alchohol?
Some dude made a zinc boot artifact. Derp. Argh, why do I never have enough food or alchohol?
Two 10x4 plots is more then enough space to not only produce enough plump helmets for all your early/mid/late game needs, but the space necessary to make these plots are easily muddied by a standard murky pool. By the time those plots start to be insufficient for your fort's needs, you'll have enough animals and workers to make butchering/planting farms easy. The only real hassle is with alcohol, but if you play your cards right with the liaison, you'll be able to get 300-400 units of alcohol per caravan visit to supplement the homegrown stockpiles.

Constant rum and beer production really helps. I've been trading for Sun Berries and might start making Sunshine soon.

A tutorial really helps getting the overall hang of how things are done (designations, workshops, stockpiles, construction...), but luckily I find myself experimenting more by now.
It's great fun trying to do stuff on your own, but sometimes it gets frustrating ("WHY WON'T MY DWARFS PICK UP THE FUCKING STUFF THAT'S OUTSIDE" - at that point I had to google it) but it's going well now. All my dwarfs died on the first save though, I think they all tried to save Steve and drowned or something. I guess that's what happens when you go get a drink and forget to pause :v: [editline]20th March 2011[/editline] So all my dwarves starved... but I'm getting the hang of it. I think all my food rotted because I put everything in a garbage dump and didn't let the dwarves claim it? They would complain of hunger but not eat the food. Stockpiles are confusing. But it's going well! Optimism is key :v:
so i went on a frozen mountain, (first time in a mostly frozen climate) and it was actually a peaceful biome (first time in one as well) and after i send all my dwarves to do their assigned duties, my wagon gets ransacked by a horde of gnomes. now with only about 20 out of 65 beer i came with i send my dwarves to go try to wrestle them to death, 6 gnomes later he is a competent wrestler and we have bodies all over the courtyard of my fort :v:

When you dump something it gets auto-forbidden. You have to reclaim dumped stuff to make them usable. Food stockpiles inside still applies though, never make them outside.

Not tonight though, I'm going to bed now. UK represent. Next time I'll wait till I have stockpiles to dismantle the cart.
The "food stockpiles always inside" thing is good to know, it seems that's not in the wiki. Also, sorry for asking again, but how exactly does the "autobackup" feature work? Where does it save the backup to? EDIT:
Uh, I could do? Not tonight though, I'm going to bed now. UK represent. Next time I'll wait till I have stockpiles to dismantle the cart.
Haha, would surely be cool, and I don't think I'd be the only one interested. EDIT2: Well, I experimented a bit with it, and it seems the "autobackup" feature only makes sense if you enabled seasonal autosaves, since it only backups during an autosave, not during normal saving. Also, if you enable autosaves and disable autobackup, the autosaves gets put into the default folder, and no "___-spr-sum-..." folders are created. Is all of that correct?
So finally decided to sit down and learn this shit. Well surprisingly enough I got my head around the very basics (shit like understanding where I am, which are dwarves and which are trees, and how to give basic orders). I have one problem though, and that's how to pick stuff up. I have quite a bit of chopped trees lying around and a few minerals. I would have expected it to be under designations, but it isn't (I'd check the tutorial in the OP, but the link is broken or the website is down).
They do it automatically, just make a wood stockpile.
- 0001023: [Dwarf Mode -- Jobs, Cancellation and Suspension] People picking up soap, getting "cancels Clean Self: Area inaccessible", then dropping it (Toady One) - resolved.
YESSSSSSSsssssssss
oh fuck yes
Poeple who say "wouldn't it be cool if DF was Merge with Minecraft" are just as bad as people who say "Hey wouldn't it be cool if the monopoly money was real!"
No way is the soap bug fix. The DF experience is not complete without it.

Agh, I genuinely think that there is no iron to be had anywhere near my fortress. Dug down four levels looking for it. My fortress is pretty terrible anyway. _/:v:\_
I added a mineral availability parameter that you can set from Create World Now or from the detailed parameter screen.
If so, you should set the minerals to a high setting as the default one barely gives any.
Nope, old version. Ah well, I think my fortress is coming to it's end. And it's gonna be a slow painful death. :smith: My dwarfs have no food, or booze, they don't seem to collect plants anymore, they're all unhappy, the military is complaining of having too long a patrol duty. Agh.
Fucking lungfish. I found an absolutely perfect starting location for an outdoor fortress. A fork in a river, creating a peninsula. Thousands of trees, plenty of stone and metal. The river is fresh water and filled with fish. However, mid-summer, the attack. A group of 50 lungfish emerged from the river and attacked all my dwarves. They did no damage, but they stole all my ropes and went back to their hellhole in the river.

I think it's in orders anyway, it took me ages to find but if you don't enable it they just ignore stuff that's outside whether you have a stockpile or not. [editline]21st March 2011[/editline] Is there an easy way to take a screenshot? If I did an LP I'd have to do it with images, I don't have fraps (and I can't be bothered videoing it because it'll most likely be 3 hours of "where's this button in the menu?").
