Poeple who say "wouldn't it be cool if DF was Merge with Minecraft" are just as bad as people who say "Hey wouldn't it be cool if the monopoly money was real!"
I haven't played DF a lot yet so I'm not that knowledgeable about the game, but wouldn't a DF with Minecraft gameplay and graphics take a lot of effort to develop and one hell of a computer to run?
the military is complaining of having too long a patrol duty. Agh.
Happens if you keep them on active training for too long. You should have them inactive for some time every now and then. Like, 2 months training, 2 months inactive (they still do invidual combat drills tho), repeat.

Grr, plant faster! as soon as I get a plump helmet grown, the dorfs grab it and take it to the dining room and eat it.
Alt-Printscreen?
I always forget to paste the screenshot into paint or whatever.
I just noticed, it may be cool to see a blind LP of Dwarf Fortress...feel like doing one? ;)
Yeah it'd probably be like "OH MY GOD WHAT ARE ALL THESE SYMBOLS HOW DO I PLAY THIS GAME" then the video ends after 20 seconds into world generation. [editline]21st March 2011[/editline] It'd be awesome if Minecraft got a Dwarf Fortress mode once modding comes out properly.
Toady himself illustrated the Dwarf Fortress food chain. Was an art reward to some guy who donated in the past, hence the "thanks" in the corner.
so why are elves above dwarves. is there some unwritten rule about elves eating dwarves
Elves eat sentient humanoids unlike other civilizations. They're also cannibals.
Elves eat sentient humanoids unlike other civilizations. They're also cannibals.
Indeed. Just look at their face, it's a cannibal alright. They eat their slayed enemies in worldgen even if it was of their own race.
Is it true that Elves are smaller then humans now? I'm getting some serious Dragon Age vibes from that if it's true.
Doesn't really matter, won't make them any less harder to kill. FUCKING ELVES MAN.
I was building cage traps and channeling something at the same time. The result was a cave-in, and 2 dwarves got knocked unconscious and fell onto the cage traps. I now have 2 caged dwarves. I only noticed because the other dwarves tried to bring them water the whole time. What I can't figure out is how to release them. I built the cages and tried unassigning the dwarves, but they are still sitting inside there. Help? EDIT: GAH, when I remove the built cages, my dwarves haul the things back to the stockpile with the two guys still in there. Idiots. What do I do? D: EDIT2: I managed to release them with the help of a lever. Seriously, is there no easier way? :/
Should I get into this game again? Has adventure mode been updated? I tried fortress mode but it seemed way too deep and complex for me.
DF Elves are actually sort of terrifying. They enslave hordes of animals and basically everything else they trade to you is made of wood, which means they don't actually care about trees and are just trying to monopolize wood. Oh, and the whole deal about them eating combatants after besting them.
Is there any way to find out what date I started the fortress?
monopolize wood.
The rich bastards, I knew something was wrong with them.
The rich bastards, I knew something was wrong with them.
This is why all Elven liaisons re to be cleaned with magma at the end of every transaction.
Is it true that Elves are smaller then humans now? I'm getting some serious Dragon Age vibes from that if it's true.
DF elves are still extremely different than standard fantasy elves
So I struck Platinum, and a few minutes after that a ton of immigrants arrive. I went from 17 Dwarves to 33, I don't think I can sustain that many with my current food production. [editline]22nd March 2011[/editline] Great another wave, 42 now.

Make a burrows named "Deathtower" up there and then assign the migrants who posess no useful skills to this burrow. Then get a dwarf to pull a lever that's been connected to said bridge. The fall should kill the migrants; if it doesn't, make them do it again or put spikes at the bottom of the fall or something.

I do not have military at the moment, but I do have a hunter who is a fucking sadist (checking the combat log he tortured an alligator with like 20 arrows before killing him), can't I tell him to attack the Jeweler? Or just tell everyone to gang up on the jeweler, for that matter.
Poeple who say "wouldn't it be cool if DF was Merge with Minecraft" are just as bad as people who say "Hey wouldn't it be cool if the monopoly money was real!"
I'd love to see the level of complexity in what you can create in DF in minecraft, but that's about it. Especially all the different minerals DF has.
EDIT2: I managed to release them with the help of a lever. Seriously, is there no easier way? :/
You can build the cage, then go in the q menu of the cage and go to (a)ssign and unselect the dwarves. You can pick which cage to build by doing. b - j - Select a spot - x - Select the right cage
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Attack
Thanks, that worked fine (he did put up quite a fight though). Now I have a Yak bull and a Billy Goat going apeshit though and I can't mark them for killing, the hell is up with that?

Otherwise, move their pasture elsewhere.
Is it possible to store wood as blocks like stone? And is it worth storing stone at all? (Seeing as there's so much of it)
This game.. First ever barony, and immediately comes a goblin siege with ~10 pikemen and ~15 bowmen. On flying mounts . Luckily most of just hang out in the corners of the map and I can trade with caravans etc. no problem. Until a foolish dwarf gets too close to a few gobbo pikemen and leads them right up to the fortress entrance. The scuffle gets only 3 dwarves killed (2 non-military) but it's unfortunately more than enough to get a tantrum spiral on the roll since everybody has lots of friends and due to the deep pits taking their steady share of fatalities it isn't particularly difficult to send the already miserable off the deep end. What happens next is that none other than the Captain of the Guard herself bashes a guard in the head with her crossbow in a fit of rage, smashing his brains in. Naturally, his friends get upset and start fights, wounding and occasionally dismembering their comrades and making more and more people over the brink of insanity. After that, things spiral completely out of control, somebody breaks Guard Captain's skull(without killing her, miraculously) and the guardsmen are shooting random dwarves(with all the chaos going on it's hard to know since there are just so damn many combat reports, most from minor scuffles, though). While I'm trying to control the chaos on the first floor(where the most fights are) , a soldier assaults my newly appointed baron and slices his right hand off. He gets quickly cut down by what is the still somewhat sane portion of my military but everything is pretty much going to the dogs at this point... So, should revert to an earlier save which is from ~6 months ago, right after the baron gets appointed and nobody has gone off the deep end or should I just watch everybody tear each other apart in a shower of blood and guts, miasma and feces :black101: ?
Is it possible to store wood as blocks like stone? And is it worth storing stone at all? (Seeing as there's so much of it)
I'm just making floors out of it. Even then, there is so much fucking stone I have filled two rooms that are nearly 20x50, and there is still some around. The only problem bigger than the stone problem is the immigration problem. Ever since I found Platinum immigrants have been arriving at an alarming rate, was at 20 dwarves a few hours ago now I'm at 60, and I can't produce enough food so I will have to start eliminating some of the useless ones (seriously they are everything but the ones I need, miners) or their food consumption will lead to quite a lot of "fun". [editline]22nd March 2011[/editline] Also fuck Capybaras, thought they'd be weak rodents instead they maimed one of my recruits, and took with itself to the grave one of my wrestlers (not very familiar with the z-axis yet, but as far a I understood they both fought at the top of the mountain and then tumbled down into some hole while fighting and both died).
