How can I cheer my dorfs up? They are so unhappy. D:
Make a legendary dining room. It's understandable they're unhappy though, with what happened earlier. How's the ambush?
Well the ambush attacked at the same time a caravan arrived, and I believe the caravan guards smashed them around with hammers. Sheer luck let me survive that. Damn, went from some 54+ dwarfs down to 10. Pictured: Irony.
Well men, the elves ripped me off and I ripped them apart. Can I take them back to the fort and cook them?
Well, I just experienced my first total fort loss. Anyone remember a week or two ago when I posted about the forgotten beast sitting in the caves, scaring all my dwarves into cancelling all their jobs? Well, long story short, I dug a path down into the caves so that I could draft all my dwarves and swarm him... And things went poorly. I'll type up a full story in a second. I was going to just stop playing that fort, but since a new version is out, I thought I would have one last bit of fun with it. And OH was it fun. [editline]24th March 2011[/editline] All right, here's the story of the fall of Oldsword. Use it as a cautionary tale should your fort full of dwarves untrained in combat ever be plagued with a forgotten beast. Here are the dwarves swarming the forgotten beast on a hillside just outside the fort. The beast is represented by a big yellow/brown Q. Here's the description of the beast itself, as well as roughly the full extent of the wounds it would acquire during my dwarven onslaught. All of these wounds are represented by yellow in the v menu. The attacks of the dwarven swarm were not very effective, as this list proves: And apparently they have a great fondness for biting... A bit of an odd choice for attacking a stone beast, I'd say, but I guess I'm just not that dwarvenly. Before long the dwarves were fighting this beast in a pool of their own blood. By the way, when I say I drafted all of my dwarves, I mean ALL of my dwarves. Well, except the children of course. A child does as it pleases! Now, while this forgotten beast was making a general mess of things, a goblin ambush was happening at the same time. Several of those goblins were killed by the beast. At the same time, an elven caravan was visiting. None of the elves survived. Also, here you can see the trap-laden entrance of my fort. There's one part that I thought was particularly ingenious: A one-space wide walkway covered with traps, and a pit on either side, so if anyone tries to dodge the traps, they fall in a pit. I was going to fill that pit with traps and vicious beasts, but never got around to it. It's really a shame that I never got to make good use of that trap setup before the fall of the fortress. The dwarven deaths started coming in by the truckload. I made a plan to station all my dwarves right inside the fort, luring the forgotten beast past the traps, and hopefully either killing it or dropping it in the pit. I would later learn that the beast doesn't even trigger traps, unfortunately, but a bigger problem with this plan was that all of my dwarves were either lying unconscious on the battlefield or resting in the hospital. I thought I had more beds in my hospital than I'd ever use, but as it turned out, the place got so full of wounded dwarves that some of them ended up resting on tables, and one of them ended up resting on the floor. One of my dwarves spent a particularly long time getting kicked and stung by the beast as he lay unconscious on the battlefield (long enough to fill 44 pages of a report) and I have no idea how he went so long without dying. Well, eventually, having wreaked enough havoc on the above-ground land, the beast went inside and started murdering kittens. For some reason, he skipped over the wounded dwarves in the hospital and went into the dormitories killing more kittens and smashing up beds and doors (which took a surprisingly long time). Then this happened. areyoufuckingkiddingme.jpg I just imagined all those 10 ambitious little dwarves who heard of the great living they could make in the fortress of Oldsword... Then they arrive, and SLAUGHTERED LIVESTOCK EVERYWHERE, A BUNCH OF DEAD GOBLINS AND ELVES, AND 50 FUCKING MUTILATED DWARF CORPSES LYING IN THE GRASS. Well, naturally I took a great deal of time and consideration assigning them each their own special name and job. Needless to say, it was a slaughter. At this point, the only remaining dwarf is 'Grace' Swalloweddaggers, a 7-year-old girl. She hides in the dining hall with all the animals as all of the adults slowly die of thirst in the very next room. Then this happened. areyoufuckingkiddingmeagain.jpg Then this happened. lol. There were only about 4 humans in this caravan, so they really didn't stand a chance. The goblins chased them all over the damn place and killed them and their horses. I spent a long time watching the forgotten beast slowly destroying doors and beds, and maiming the occasional kitten. After some time, I noticed these two goblin invaders who just would not leave the map, and I had no idea why. So I zoomed to them from the unit list, and guess what I found? They fell into my trap! Fuck yeah! Turns out it worked just as I'd hoped. Three of the goblins died on impact upon dodging the traps, but two of them just got their legs all smashed up. It would have been great if I'd been able to put more traps in there. It also would have been great if the forgotten beast hadn't killed everybody, but if that were the case, I'd have to wait for those last two goblins to starve before I opened the floodgate. By this time, all the wounded dwarves had died of thirst in the hospital and finally, Grace decided it was bedtime. She went down into the dormitories, and she caught the eye of the forgotten beast. It chased her to the end of the hallway, and I knew that this terrifying scene meant the end of Oldsword. There you have it. That's how to have as much fun as possible in Dwarf Fortress. Learn from my mistakes and perhaps your fortress will be more fortunate. [editline]24th March 2011[/editline] I just realized I never put the beast's name in any screenshots. If anyone's curious, it's Ngopex Plagueechoed the Foggy Abysses
Someone should make a novel of that story. Or a movie.
You tried to punch a forgotten beast to death? A forgotten beast made out of stone?
Dwarves have surprisingly strong jaws. One guy fractured the beast's head by biting it.
How do you guys go about finding ore?
Is there a way to see a list of creatures in your local area? I think I read somewhere that you could, but I can't find that page again. [editline]25th March 2011[/editline]
Is this game easy to get to grips with?
Yes (though if compared to other games: No, not at all). You only need three things: - Patience and will to learn - The wiki - Not afraid to ask if you get stuck
DF loves to give a big "fuck you" to players that think they've survived some major catastrophe.
Indeed. I just barely scraped through a huge food/beer shortage and started getting a surplus, then everyone stopped drinking the beer because they were tired of it and the entire fortress died of dehydration.

Thought it only gave a bad thought, not stop them completely.
Okay, I know you guys have probably heard and answered this question many times before in the past. I have attempted to play DF many, many times, but the incomprehensibly frustrating UI left me in the dust. It seems like such a fun game, but I just can't wrap my head around the UI. Should I stick with it? And if so, could you give me any kind of advice on what the most stable/comprehensible version is? (And has a decent tutorial, if at all possible?)

The trick to liking DF is willpower, you have to stick with it through the UI and graphics. If there's anything in the UI you don't understand you can always ask.

Looks like you guys just gained another DF'er.
It was really quite fun to learn DF in my opinion. And I don't mean the Fun you'll be seeing later.
I really don't get it though. I'm not new to games like this. (Well, not like THIS one.) UI's never really bothered me. But DF... Man. It frustrates me beyond reason.

I'm still a little bummed over Oldsword. They overcame so much hardship to get where they were. Zombie hoary marmots showed up and annoyed everyone, then came zombie / skeletal mountain goats, which provided little resistance... Then came zombie / skeletal yaks. There were like 4 survivors. But after that, things went very smoothly. Then... Ngopex.......

Finally, in the name of Armok, I got a big farm up and running. No more hunger for one year.
I just started a new fort and every single one of the starting 7 are female. I wonder how I can exploit this for more fun [editline]25th March 2011[/editline]
Get the pack I posted earlier, the .rar has a less eye-raping color and square tiles and weapon balance fixes.
Well my godly adventurer was oneshotted by a weak lasher outlaw but if you say so ok.
I just started a new fort and every single one of the starting 7 are female. I wonder how I can exploit this for more fun
Start an Amazon fort Kill all males, be a female warrior clan living in small huts
Alright, I have decided I'm going to do this my way. Fuck a tutorial. I will attempt to build many civilizations, and inevitably see them fall, before I figure out what I need to know. Smart? No. Fun? Most likely.

I myself just learned how to play a few days ago, it looks harder than it actually is when you first start it up, now it kind of comes natural (and if it doesn't, to the Wiki or ask). You can download graphic packs that make the game look more like a 8-bit era/NES game, but I preferred learning the basics before using any such thing (if only for the personal challenge).
