Dwarf Fortress v13 - Orkel looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!

I've never been attacked so far (2 years in on this fort). Should I start a military? I have lots of clothiers and farmers that I don't really need or use, and I'm starting to mine lower levels now.
What's the use of trading? I seem to be able to get everything I want so far.
Also, I made a custom stockpile that will take tetrahedrite and I have a lot of it, but my dwarfs won't go pick it up. It's not full either.
Edit: nevermind I read it wrong

That's a really old DF version, I strongly recommend you start a new world and a new fort with 31.25 which is the newest.
Oh. I guess I will do that then. I mean, my fortress didn't go that well anyway. No water since all was frozen.
One more thing, if I like that tileset, which do you think I should try out?
Is this it?

Indeed it is! You are a champion my friend!
Going to start a kick-ass fortress tomorrow then. Strike the earth!
Tip for y'all: if you only have copper on your map, use speardwarves or hammerdwarves. Copper spears can go through iron and bronze because of their small impact area, and copper warhammers can bust even steel and adamantine armor thanks to the blunt attacks. Goblins usually use copper armor, with some pieces of iron mixed in, so copper spears or copper warhammers are the best choices for low quality metal forts.
How do you build workshops? I'm guessing you need them to build beds, which my dwarfs sorely need at the moment, or at least my engineer and farmer do, because I've only got two picks, and they've been doing all the digging.

b-w-c for carpenter's workshop, then q-go over it-a-b to make a bed, and then b-b to place said bed, then q-go over bed-r to make a room

Ah, thankyou.
Then you can q-go over the bed-a-select dwarf-enter to assign the room to a dwarf.

Dwarves claim empty rooms automatically so this isn't necessary unless you specifically want to give a room to a certain dwarf, like a mayor's bedroom or so.

Well, I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I'm assigning everyone a bed so I can make a little ward next to the Medic's room and not have dwarves wandering past and going to sleep.
I never got into making my fortress have coins and nobles and all that shit, so I'll make it my objective for this one even though hauling the coins all over the place is a bitch. I shall make a vault.

I always make a vault, but lock it so dwarves don't haul the coins around. I like having coins from each year, as every year the coin design changes. Gold coins from 1055 look different from 1056 coins etc.
Yet another dwarf of mine got into a strange mood and claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop. Guess what material they grabbed first?
THAT'S RIGHT! GOLD NUGGETS!
And some rope reed fiber cloth.
I'll update soon with whatever useless golden trinket gets produced.
[editline]28th March 2011[/editline]
All right, it's a golden drum, worth 74,400☼
It is encircled with bands of rope reed fiber and menaces with spikes of native gold.

My engravers keep making images of this elf that got killed by an ettin in the year 91. There are 8 different depictions of this elf getting killed by an ettin on the dining room walls alone
I love my dwarves.
There's also one image of the same Ettin wandering The Hills of Squirting in 26
it appears we're being sieged

it appears we're no longer being sieged
Two of my marksdwarves got bolts stuck in them (one in his leg and one in his shoulder) but other than that, the siege was annihilated without any deaths. Thanks to my elite soldiers and Ragemidget + Psychognome.
I think I need to make some sort of nobility disposal unit..
Any advice for a small quick device?
Hey Orkel, care to share your fort layout?
Dwarves claim empty rooms automatically so this isn't necessary unless you specifically want to give a room to a certain dwarf, like a mayor's bedroom or so.
Personally I found that takes way too long, some dwarves take like two years to find themselves a bed. I just assign them, it's a quick job anyway.

My harem game continues. :v:
What's the default max number of dwarves?
I myself have lost abaut 4-8 forts and the worst part is only 1 was lost do FUN happening in the fortress.
A fire resulting from fire goblin fat in the food storage and everyone going mad.
Other forts have been lost due to my PC being retarded and the HD deciding to die.
I've only ever lost one fort as well. But it was due to all 7 of my dwarves being swarmed by skeletal elephants on embark.
So apparently adamantine armor sucks against arrows, bolts and blunt weapons
Which makes sense because the armor is so incredibly light, that blunt force gets through really easily, easier than with steel or such which weigh much more. The arrows and bolts don't get through adamantine at all, but they transfer their energy in the blunt form, causing fractures and the shit more often than with steel armor.
Meh, Adamantine is supposed to be some sort of wizard metal so it should be the best overall
I don't care about physics, DF breaks them in so many ways already

I'm guessing in order to best harness adamantine in armor, make an adamantine mail shirt and pop a steel breastplate on that, the steel's weight will take the blunt hits and the adamantine beneath prevents any edges from getting through
Hey Orkel, care to share your fort layout?
My current fort doesn't have a particular one, it's more of an "alive" fort where shit gets put wherever there's space.
To be honest adamantine should be perfect light armor, the chainmail and leggings wouldn't weight anything
Perfect for archers etc
Kinda wish DF had all those fancy formations etc for military, forming a turtle would be cool as fuck
What the hell? I just made a world in the new version, carefully planned my group, and then headed out. I did notice it said "Ice Wolves" where it should say "Dwarves" on the planning screen, but I figured it might be a kind of dwarf or something. Nope:

Those are my seven dwarves. Only, they are wolves. And it says they are injured, most likely because they don't have fucking arms to pick up stuff with. And shortly after I took that screenshot the cart started to burn. What the fuck?

Something's screwed with your raw files.
[editline]29th March 2011[/editline]
Did you install DF in a new folder or overwrite the old?
Something's screwed with your raw files.
Damnit. I'll try to fix it. Thanks! I would not know where to look.
You are a lifesaver. Thanks again!
My current fortress isn't particularly made for looks, but it works.
