Is it a pretty bad idea to disassemble your trade depot when merchants are in there?

You steal all of their stuff.
But they get pretty pissed about it, and are likely to bring bad stuff next time. In the case of Elves, the "worse" stuff is usually better, unless you are in a no wood area (their "best" stuff is tons of wood.)

Ah. They aren't going to go all siege-y on me later, are they?

Humans will siege you, elves will ambush you and dwarves will bring less stuff next time (I think)

Oh. I guess I'll just let them leave.. On that note, whats a good item to churn out solely for trade?

Personally I've found weapons and armor (steel specifically) to be the best form of trade, as steel is plentiful under the right conditions (even more so if you have a magma industry going) and often lacks a use once you're done forging full suits of armor/weapons for your military.
It gives your weaponsmiths/armorsmiths something to work on to improve their skills as well.

Most efficient are goblets. Metal ones are made in the metalsmith's forge, under "other objects".

Alright then. Armor and weapon trading it is. I think I might make my civilization a trade based one. Seems like a reasonable choice. It will help with my current inability to keep a farmplot/kitchen/still balance.

I might do that too, then.

I stole your bedroom design Orkel. It seemed more efficient than what I was building.
Forgotten beast suddenly appeared in my meeting hall, and it attacked an engraver.
The engraver was HandlessBob, who lost his right hand to a cave ogre several years ago.
The FB ripped off his left hand. Poor Bob, now he's truly handless.

Does this mean he can't carry anything if he survives ?
If he survives, make him a guard and have him bite criminals as a punishment :v: .
Who am I kidding, I bet he died of blood loss already :ohdear: .
That poor bastard. What's he gonna do now, engrave with his teeth?

Nope he survived.
His left leg's nerves have also been torn, so he can't stand or walk, and because both of his hands are gone, he can't use a crutch, so he instead slithers around on the ground from place to place.

Now you should make him a guard. Biting peoples ankles as punishment!
What's the default max number of dwarves?
Pretty sure it's 200. I haven't had any DF2010 forts get that high though, because they've all been too much fun.
My current fortress isn't particularly made for looks, but it works.

I use pots instead of barrels, better to make them out of stone so precious wood isn't wasted.
And I don't like bins, I like seeing how much stuff I have with a glance instead of having to go all the way to the stocks screen.
Well you may be doing things way different from me, but I've gotta have stuff in bins because I bring a lot to the trade depot, and I don't want to have to mark much.
Why you should never make adamantine warhammers.

I wanna make that my wallpaper.. :v:
I hate it when artists "forget" to draw their dwarves to have blood, mud, alcohol and vomit on their beards. Then again, dwarves do clean themselves now.

I usually just stick make rock crafts on repeat and let my stonecrafter use up all the excess useless stone. Then I trade the crap by the bin full.

Thats what I've been doing. :v:
Finally posting a fortress, haven't played in a while and I was surprised to find this one so established. Around 100 Dwarves, no children which I regret and a crappy military. Lack of iron I think.

There's four levels of apartments too, each with bed, cabinet.

Down below, workshops, farms and food.

Top right is the baron's tower, three levels of meeting hall, dining room and bedroom each with artefacts and windows. Got to spoil the bastard.
I wish I could make fortresses like that. :smith:
You can, it just takes a few days of patience and loneliness

Took me half of last summer, due to the tower being 40 z-levels high and that wall being a 6 z-levels high and made of pure steel blocks. :smug:
I felt so hollow afterwords though :smith:
I was hoping you'd post that, I remember that in the last thread: fucking insane.
I think the guy who made stonesense made some awesome forts, may have been saves though. One was a huge dam: I'd love to try that.
Oh snap, my first forgotten beast! I was excited to test my small, yet well trained army against it.
Well, I was until I noticed it is composed of water. What do I do with that?!
I have a feeling this is [del]the end of another fortress[/del] going to be a lot of fun.
Edit:
Strike that. I thought water beasts would be impervious to damage. I have discovered the opposite of this is true.
He was punched to death by a potter. :v:
