Bah, looks nothing like it's supposed to.
Here, kill it with this:
Whats a good group to embark on? I'm usually going after industry on embark, and set my first group of migrants as my military.
It really depends on personal preference. I go after heavy industry in the beginning, then just assign jobs as migrants arrive based on their own skills, attributes, and what the fortress needs.

Well thats worked for me so far. I was just making sure I wasn't missing something, I guess.
Feh, I don't know how to get my dwarves to collect the wood I told them to cut. I go into orders and select w for collect wood, but none of them do anything.
Moats. With or without water?

"I had a fortress where roughly 90% of the engravings were of buckets, buckets surrounded by dwarves, and buckets surrounded by screaming dwarves.
I stopped making engravings after a while."

Are your wood stockpiles full?

Magma, but I'd recommend without water. I'm pretty sure goblins can go insane if they're stuck in one place for too long, so before you know it you'll be watching them tear their arms off and beating their best friend to death with it.

Oh, I never designated stockpiles. whoops.
Orkel linked me to The Hamlet of Tyranny, and I was just about speechless. Brilliant, epic story.
Just genned a world with surface level magma, infinite water source, flux stone and shallow metal. Pretty pumped.

Jesus Christ.
The most action I have is a war dog bit a water buffalo, which bled to death in my refuse pile.

Magma! :buddy:
Damn, danger rooms are just, awsome, its been just 5 minutes since I assigned my dworfs to the danger room, and I already have 2 Legendary +3 Fighter and one legendary Shield user.
Wish I had finished it earlier.

They're really cheap though, it's a gamey method of training soldiers. I'm not going to use them in my new fort.
My clothier just created a lama wool veil, and put an image of the thing itself on it.

I still don't know how Dwarves do that, putting things of the thing their making while it isn't complete.

It's because all craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.

So what you're saying is that when Dwarves start their crafting they become Demi-Gods.

Do not tempt fate.

But they could probably put an image of it on after they made it.
So... I cannot brew anymore alcohol: "needs distilled item" and I can no longer smelt because I need more "refined coal"... How do I get refined coal?
I want to start DF, I have tried many times and failed.
I would like some links to some good tile sets if that's ok, and any good tutorials? ( yes I have read op )
Ironhand tileset perhaps? http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2511

I've just decided to go with ASCII myself, using the width fix of course.
Oh gawd oh gawd how do I get "distilled" objects, tell me quick or my 50 dwarves will starve------
Do you have plump helmets?
Yes, a shitload, I assume it's the fact that they don't have water since it's winter and the lakes are frozen over. I've dug to an underground river which I located a while back, and the miners sat there drinking right from it for like 5 minutes... My brewer still cant seem to get to it though. I just need to survive through the winter. Then Ill build a pump.

Plump helmets + a barrel or a stone pot = booze
Not sure why it's not working, do you have access to them
YES! I SURVIVED! All my dwarves rushed out to the lakes the moment they unfroze.

If you dont get some booze pretty quickly, thats gonna be a short victory.
