Alright, I've never played this game before today. Installed it, decided to try out the testing mode. Spawned 10 dwarves with silver warhammers and iron armor, and a single horse.
the horse slaughtered all of the dwarves.
So i equpied the artifact crossbow on my military commander, and i keept digging down till i didnt reach some kind of caves, 3 giant cave spiders atacked my miner and killed him so i send in the military commander to kill the spiders, he used 4 wood bolts to kill them... (remeber i suck at this game) i go and try to make some armor for him. So when i was in the military menu equiping him with the new armor i made i noticed he killed 3 cave spiders while wearing a dress.
When I discovered that the mouse could be used to draw designations when mining, etc. I had used arrow keys, shift, and enter for a long time.
:aaaaa:
The mouse is kinda useless for drawing designations imo
So, how do I install this?
Download the .png, place it in data\art\
go to data\init\init.txt, change the [FONT:] part to [FONT:Anikki_square_20x20.png]
That should work
[editline]2nd April 2011[/editline]
If you wish to use the .bmp instead (why) do the same thing, except change the file extension on the [FONT:] part to .bmp

Now I feel bad, I have never encountered a Giant Cave Spider before :smith:
It's way easier to use the keyboard instead of mouse in DF imo.
i made a danger room where 2 of my millitary are sparring while getting hit by training spears at the same time, wont they die of thirst or hunger after a while?

Yeah it probably is, fits the grid better. Still, was pretty surprised that the mouse could be used for quite a bit of things.

Set them as inactive when they get hungry/tired/thirsty.
seems i dont even need to lock the door as they traing with eachother in there while getting hit by spears then they eat/drink repeat

If you keep them on active/training for too long they'll become unhappy from long patrol duty.
my millitia captain is on grand master and legendary level already
[editline]2nd April 2011[/editline]
is there any way to make my millitary attack a specific target?

s (to select your squad) -> A (select whole squad) -> k (kill a specific unit) -> l(if you want to select one from a list)
awesome i now have a mace lord and a hammer lord
[editline]2nd April 2011[/editline]
i cant figure out how to turn of patrol duty to make them not so grumpy about it being so long?
[editline]2nd April 2011[/editline]
also why is there an elf walking around in my fortress?
Since there are still 4 hammer goblins ambushing me, and I still don't have a military, I decided to get rid of them by releasing the Minotaur I captured earlier.
I lured them close, sealed the fortress shut and opened his cage.
They killed him.
Seriously, I don't know how to deal with them any more :ohdear:

You scheduled an order for them to train right? you can always schedule train order and assign half of the squad to them, so each month a different portion of the squad trains while the other rests.
i just realised im on my save where im stuck at 16 pop no one gets kids and no immigrants and this has been going on for 5 years
[editline]2nd April 2011[/editline]

1. Go to the schedule screen, cancel the first order them press 'o' to create one.
2. Press 'o' till it changes to Train
3. Select half of the dwarfs
4. Pres '+' or '-' till you have "5 soldiers minimus" (bottom left)
5. Shift+Enter
Them you can copy that order with c and paste one month, leave the other month empty, and them you do the same with the empty months, but change the dwarfs that are going to get assigned for training.
Okay, so I hurled two of the four goblins into my drowning pit with my bridge, and managed to capture the other two in cages. My population during the whole incident went from 76 to 18, and I also lost my captured Minotaur who might have been valueable.
Next up on the agenda, after cleaning the halls of blood and trying to re-introduce some infrastructure: Weapon traps, cage traps, drop pits. A METRIC FUCKTON OF THEM.
Until then, all entrances shall remain sealed shut.
just did 15 mins of scheduling and when i went out it dissapeared god dwarf fortress makes me want to kill myself
Uh, since when can wooden constructions like walls and floors burn down? Is this a new feature?
It's been that way for so long I can't remember. The only three things that fire doesn't burn are stones, metals, and water.

Why are you even bothering with scheduling, just turn them on and off training every now and then from the s menu
how does the animals get past the thigtly sealed door? a kitten just bled to death :saddowns:
how does the animals get past the thigtly sealed door? a kitten just bled to death :saddowns:
There's a very brief moment when a dwarf enters than a fast animal can use, "tightly closed" only means that animals can't OPEN the door.

I thought all things built from the constructions menu (b > C) were indestructible?

Yeah, it might have changed in DF2010 though, the wiki says the same thing (only stones, metal and water).

How do I tell my mason to stop being a douche and use the magma-safe material that is 5 feet from his workshop?
How do I tell my mason to stop being a douche and use the magma-safe material that is 5 feet from his workshop?
If you're building magmasafe floodgates etc, you can assign him to a burrow and leave the specific material inside, he'll only use the material inside the burrow.
