Dwarf Fortress v13 - Orkel looses a roaring laughter, fell and terrible!

Hey Orkel, how do you train your military?
(Not as in general, as in how you specifically do it).
Yay FP is up again, now I can ask that important question I wanted to ask.
Uh, I can't remember what the question was, probably has to do with it having been actual 9 hours ago.
I have chopped up all the trees in my fortress! What do I do now? My brewer is getting mad because he can't have any barrels. Everything is becoming fun.

Make pots from stone using a craftsdwarf's workshop. They can be used for brewing
Or you could dig deep into the ground, make a magma smelter + forge, and make some metal barrels.
Thanks alot both of you!
I now believe in steel armour and shields,
Looks like the fix in my mod that stops clothes from degrading didn't work. Damn you, misinformation on wiki!
Clothes are degrading atm, and my fortress FPS has halved from 110 to around 60 because of it.
What do you mean by "degrading"?

Also, hah I'm running a previous version of 2010 so I don't need to worry about stuff in the new version.

Why is your macedwarf using a steel short sword?
I tried this a bit. Without any understanding i had no idea what was happening in the screen. I obviously saw the dwarfs but this happens when i don't read the manual at all.
That's pretty much what happened my first time playing DF. I started my first fortress thinking everything would come naturally like most games and an hour later my dwarves are still idling around the wagon. That damn wagon.

I need to test my rating thing.

Click the random story link and you should go to the ashmalice story, it's the only one on there currently.

Which one of you rated it godawful
[editline]4th April 2011[/editline]
Oh nevermind, he changed it.

After this I plan to add the option to add stories with a picture, but should I also add comments?
I'm making plans for a trap, so I need to know if this will work... The plan is to have a pit trap that's filled with upright spears. In the event that something survives the fall, the spears will all be linked to one lever. If something is alive in the pit, I have a dwarf pull the lever, and set it to repeat. The idea is that the spears will continuously stab whatever's in there. Will that work properly?

Sounds like it'd work.
For added benefit, a person killed by an upright spear will be stuck on said trap.
Should do. Just be sure to seal the build entrance to the pit with a wall while building destroyers are there.

Well at least it isn't made of metal or some shit. Wish me luck!

K he decided he's going to roam the caverns for a while instead of actually finding a way into the fort.
Couldn't you also place two doors right next to each other with no space between them or has toady fixed that?
Well this beast turned out to be a pussy. He didn't even kill anything. He charged at a child, but like 3 military dwarves were right there ready to deal with it.

How the hell does this happen I don't even

Fuck yeah my dwarves fight dirty. I raised them well.
Then one of them bashed it in the brain with his mace. I don't think the beast even wounded anyone, let alone kill them.
First goblin siege ever, this is on my second fortress ever, too bad I over prepared (too bad for the goblins that is)
Closed them into a 2-wide hallway, 300 style. Most of my men have SOME steel armor and iron weapons, with the exception of my main dwarf, named after me wielding a steel war-hammer. Full iron chain, with full steel plate over top, hammerlord.
Asses were kicked, marksdwarves fired steel bolts, iron weapons were swung. Goblins were slaughtered. Sadly two of my roughly 12 men died. One was caught outside when they arrived, and the poor speardwarf couldn't handle them by himself. The second casualty was my wrestler, duked in full steel. I am actually amazed at how he didn't die during the goblin ambush, or when I decided to slaughter the dwarf caravan... during those fights he was cut and shot in every possible place, his organs being ruptured and his eye being "torn"... In all his battles he always got beat up for a bit, then he quickly and efficiently slaughtered everyone.
For example, after being thrown on the ground, bolt protruding and bleeding, he gets up, grabs the sword dwarf in an unbreakable grip around the right arm, then punches him repeatedly in all four limbs, shattering the major bones every time, until he finally crushed his skull. He must have wanted the guy to feel pain... After battles he recovered almost instantly, it was one of his attributes. So when the hammergoblin was beating his ass I didn't mind... until I noticed his skull got crushed, and he passed away. I am terribly disturbed by this.
The goblins paid with their lives.....
[editline]5th April 2011[/editline]
The goblins....will....pay...
A second siege, more gobs and a spearmaster. Killed my poor workers outside. My fort will hold it's ground until the end!
[editline]5th April 2011[/editline]
Oh jesus! A troll!
[editline]5th April 2011[/editline]
Oh god... the trolls! They killed everyone... All my masters...... Even the poor new squad of four recruits I recruited only a minute before the siege happened, they didn't even get to try out the danger room.
I have had two sieges so far. The first one was small, only melee goblins. I had prepared well, so I had a bridge set to raise, and I had walled off my entire fort. I was testing out my pressure-plates, which didn't work, (how the hell should I set them up so that goblins trip them?), so I am glad only one of the 8 goblins tried to get in. He was caught in a cage, then I pulled the lever. I quickly made a Marksdwarf company, consisting of one hunter, and sent him out on the wall. He killed what I think was the leader by headshotting the giant toad he rode on first, then pelting him with what he had left. The goblins just left then.
The second siege was larger. 22 goblins, all riding toads. And about 8 trolls. But the only way in is through the 3-wide gap where my drawbridge is. So the siege just sits there, outside. The trolls are frolicking on the plains further away for some reason.
I am having trouble with my marksdwarves though. I have four people in the company now, but they keep forgetting to pick up bolts. Also wish they went to get new bolts once they are empty. Could I make them do that by making a patrol-point on the wall, then assign it so that only two of the four should be stationed there at one time? The military-system in general confuses me, so my army is not well trained.
What was the tag to stop goblins escaping from sieges? nofear?

I don't mean to advertise, but if you like adventure mode then you should check out this thread about a great new post-apocalyptic roguelike that came out recently and doesn't have enough recognotion called Caves of Qud, which can be even more ridiculous than DF's adventure mode sometimes.
i just set my meeting area to some repeating training spears suddenly super dwarfs everywhere
Here are some basic city schematics that DF produced. There is still a lot of work to do. Each pixel is exactly one in-game tile. These are all cities of the maximum size, but it'll also be able to produce towns that are partially drawn like this and partially the old fields and so on. The different buildings will be workshops and houses -- there aren't any really large ones because we haven't gotten to manors/taverns/inns etc., but the system can easily encompass that sort of thing. Those buildings are for future releases though. The buildings often enclose yards where several families will keep their pigs and other beasts and birds. Later these yards will be used for additional buildings and they'll also be expanded out in this release and merged with roads to support things like market squares.
After I clean up the gates a bit, I'm going to move on to channels and bridges, and then I'll be working on the more specific details of the maps that you can see when you walk around.
Looks pretty close to a late medieval city. Just lacks a "main street" kind of thing, usually leading to the gates.
Exactly, add a Main Street and a Town Centre and you have a Medieval City.

I agree, those damned badgers, the sows in particular, are a pain. They harass my livestock and my dorfs in their fits of anger.
There are honey badgers. In my desert fort.
There is no escaping from their wrath.
I'd really enjoy this if I could just understand what's happening
In 40d I made a creature that was essentially a dwarf-sized troll. I gave it the item stealing properties of a rhesus-macaque, except with no fear and also an aggressive nature. They'd be attracted to the fort because of the item theft tag, then would attack the dwarves on sight.
Also they came in packs of 100-200. (I only had them inhabit terrifying biomes though) You'd have to seal the fortress until you could get a serious military, perhaps some adamantine. Then it was fun to just fight off such a massive horde.
