I can't get over how much adventure mode has improved since I last played it in 40d. After some lesser tasks, I was given a mission to kill the leader of this bandit group. I went over to his camp, and sneaked into view. He had at least fifty men with him. I went back to the fort and recruited all the soldiers there to join me and attack the camp. It was just me and a handful of guys against this army of bandits... my companions charged right in, and since they were better armored than the bandits, they survived for a while, but unfortunately there were just too many of them, and eventually the gigantic meat grinder of a battle finished up, and I was the last one left. A lot of the bandits were wounded, and easy to kill. My character is really agile, and good with a shield, so I was able to fight only a few at a time while the rest were catching up, or retreating because of their wounds. I ended up killing forty guys before fighting the leader, who was the last uninjured man in the area. It was a short fight. He immediately stabbed me through the thigh with his spear, but I was able to grab it, then kick him to the floor. I threw the spear at him, and it got stuck right in his gut. He vomited, and I pulled my sword back out and chopped his head off. I brought his head back with me, even though it was technically unnecessary to finish the mission... (Sure this was possible in the older versions, but being able to manually aim and whatnot has made a huge improvement on adventure mode for me)
If I had a shittier computer I'd use it as well, since when the FPS gets too low you can't get anything done without speeding up the dwarves.
Yeah but it completely fucks up combat balance and the likes.
Yeah, I don't think there's any way to split the speed of a creature into "combat" and "movement". If you make something walk twice as fast, it's going to swing twice as often as well. Good reason to train the armor user skill. Less encumbrance from that plate and whatnot.
Edit the raws and make 100+ war rabbits
Oh god, yes.

Great, my chief medical dwarf AND axelord has been kicked through the brain too.
What's wrong with that horse.
Ugh, I suck at keeping forts alive. Any general tips? That horse plowed through my steel armored soldiers.
Great, my chief medical dwarf AND axelord has been kicked through the brain too.
Should install my brain/weapon fix in your next fort :colbert:
Should install my brain/weapon fix in your next fort :colbert:
But it fixes the cool bugs :colbert:
I feel so useless, being surrounded by gold members and mods. ;_;
Should install my brain/weapon fix in your next fort :colbert:
Aww the brain thing isn't that bad, I've rarely gotten any "cheap" kills due to the skull issue. Of course this is anecdotal evidence, but still.
Should install my brain/weapon fix in your next fort :colbert:
It makes sense though, dorfs are the perfect size for getting a hoof to the face.
After all those years of playing Dwarf Fortress, I've only now butchered an elephant for the first time. brain biscuits everywhere
How to play with another race other than dwarves?
How to play with another race other than dwarves?
You have to add a tag to their raws, i believe. It might be [CIV_CONTROLABLE] but im not certain
It doesn't give me an option to play as them.
Well that could be because Modest Mouse misspelled CONTROLLABLE.
Well that could be because Modest Mouse misspelled CONTROLLABLE.
I can correct mistakes too. Now that I think about it, SHOULD IT give an option as to what to play?
I can correct mistakes too. Now that I think about it, SHOULD IT give an option as to what to play?
No idea, I've never done that before.
I can correct mistakes too. Now that I think about it, SHOULD IT give an option as to what to play?
Oh it's not too hard at all. Go into the entity_default (or entity_raws) and replace the Dwarf tag of [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] with [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE]. Then just add the CIV_CONTROLLABLE tag to the race you want to play (be sure to replace the INDIV_CONTROLLABLE tag most have) and then generate a new world, since you can't start playing Humans in a world generated with Dwarves as the main civilization. I had a replacement file in this thread a while ago that made Humans not only playable, but had access to steel, coal, and various other things that made them on par with Dwarves (especially the addition of nobility and assigning brokers, soldiers, etc.) http://filesmelt.com/dl/entity_default1.rar Warning: this file has everything but setting a race as the "fortress mode" one (since I don't know what race you want to play) but all you need to do is search the name of the race you want to play and either add the [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag right under the name, or replace the INDIV with CIV.

Also, how to do the same for Adventurer?
Thanks! Also, how to do the same for Adventurer?
In what way? The only race not currently playable are the goblins, which can be added by including a [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag right under their name. The file I just posted gives humans access to steel, which you'll encounter in Adventure Mode as both weapons and armor. If you don't want steel (as it's the best NPC available metal in the game, which removes some of the special nature of using Dwarves) then you just have to remove the [MAKE STEEL] tag in the list of possible smelter reactions.

Since my first succesful fort got buttfucked by that flying hairy shrimp, I suddenly feel no urge to play it again, even though I love it so much. This sucks ;_;
How to play with another race other than dwarves?
You could also do some stuff with pasting the new version over an older version. I did that, being all stupid, and ended up embarking with Snow Wolves or Ice Wolves or whatever. Did not go well. I got spammed with messages about them being to injured to pick up equipment (due to having paws instead of hands I guess), and for some reason the cart caught on fire. Not sure how that happened...
